South Dade Agriculture is rich intradition and dates as far back as earlyas the late 1800s. It is not only uniqueto the development of South Dade, butalso plays an important role insupplying produce year round due toit’s mild winters. During winter monthsour growers produce traditionalvegetables like green beans, tomatoes, strawberries and squash, while it is toocold in other parts of the country to

raise them. Growers also have year- round production of tropical fruits andvegetables such as avocados, passion fruit, malanga and boniato. Anothersector of the industry is Asian specialties like Thai guava, Thai basil, Thaieggplant, lemon grass, bitter melon and various herbs and spices. We havethe most diversified agricultural area in the country, growing everything fromAvocados to Zucchini, which offers visitors the chance to see and tastesomething new and exotic with each visit.

TROPICAL FRUITSMany of the tropical fruits grown in South Florida today were introduced in thelate 1800s. Early settlers began to grow them in their backyards and by theearly 1900s there were plantings of avocados, mangos and citrus groves.David Fairchild, Wilson Popenoe and others were responsible for theintroduction of tropical fruits that are now commonly grown in backyards andgroves of South Florida.

South Florida has a warm, humid subtropical climate that allows thegrowing of unique, exotic tropical/subtropical fruits. No other area in thecontinental U.S. has this climate and capability. South Florida is the numberone producer of mangos, large sized avocados, carambola, lychee, longan, mamey sapote, banana/plantains, sugar apple/atemoya, coconut, sapodilla, jackfruit and passion fruit.

There are approximately 13,000 acres of tropical fruits and the industry isworth about $75 million. The popularity of some of the tropical fruits hasincreased considerably. Avocados, limes, bananas, pineapple, papaya andmangos are now consumed by the general U.S. population. There areindications that consumption of other fruits such as lychee, longan, mameysapote, carambola, etc. will also increase in the future. Worldwide, the futureof the tropical fruit industry is bright. However, their production in South Floridais in jeopardy because of the negative impact imports are having on pricesthus affecting profitability.

VEGETABLE ROWMiami-Dade County is referred to as the nation’s “Salad Bowl” and “WinterBread Basket.” Miami-Dade County has a long history of vegetableproduction, especially winter tomatoes for export to northern areas, whichdates back to the late 1800s. The 2002 Census of Agriculture reportedroughly 38,000 acres of vegetables. Vegetables are grown on bothRockdale, and to a much lesser extent, marl soils. Major vegetables based onacreage include beans, squash and tropical sweet potato.

Miami-Dade produces 54% of the state’s beans, 55% of the squash and97% of the sweet potatoes. Sweet corn, tomatoes, malanga, okra, eggplantand herbs are other significant crops. Of these, Miami-Dade produces 70% ofthe state’s okra crop and 99% of the malanga. The total value of this sectorwas over $100 million in 2002. Over 90% of Miami-Dade’s vegetables areexported out of Florida. With the exception of tropical sweet potato andtanier, which are grown year-round, most vegetables are produced fromSeptember to May.

Probably a Campo Rico crew before 1920.Campo Rico farmed 1,000 acres aboutone mile from Goulds.

South Florida expressways use a system called OpenRoad Tolling. Toll booths and change takers are beingeliminated on all south Florida toll roads. The Sunpasssystem only works on Florida roads. The Sunpass is anelectronic transponder (in the form of a small sticker) puton the windshield of your car. Each time you drivethrough a toll, the toll amount is deducted from yourSunpass account. Without a Sunpass present in yourcar, this electronic toll system takes a picture of yourlicense plate and sends you a bill in the mail, Late feesapply if payment is not received within 30 days. If yourent a car, please ask to make sure the Sunpass isincluded in your vehicle. Each rental car company usesa different fee schedule for this rental option.
