MATHEMATICS NEWS Report by Gavin Parker, Head Teacher Mathematics

Maths Pathway

Years 7 and 8 are beginning their maths pathway journey for 2019. A new feature for 2019 is that you can see the areas of mastery and those yet to be mastered on the maths curriculum in the parent portal. Please contact your student's maths teacher if you can't see how to find this or would like to know how best to support your student in achieving maximum growth in mathematics this year.

We are looking forward to lots of exciting rich tasks and projects in the Year 8 program including Ilumin8.

A rich task Year 8 has been working on is Painted Cubes: Imagine a large cube made up of 27 small cubes. The large cube is dipped into paint. How many of the small cubes will have 0 faces painted, 1 face painted, two faces painted and 3 faces painted?

Next think about the same problem for a large cube made up of 64 small cubes, then 125 small cubes, then try to find general rules for any size cube.

Maths Club!

In Term 4 last year, 25 students attended our first ever Maths Club at Burwood Girls. They solved Menseki Meiro puzzles, which require basic foundations of mathematics to find missing values. Students then explored the many changing variables in real life situations and attempted to accurately graph one particular variable over time.

Our second session of Maths Club allowed students of different year groups to combine their knowledge and compete against their peers.

This term the first session of Maths Club will be held during Week 5 and will explore how mathematics is the answer to

consonance and dissonance in music. The second session will be another competition with prizes to be won.

Maths Club is open to all year groups and provides students with a chance to explore mathematics outside of the curriculum.

ChooseMaths Student Awards

The CHOOSEMATHS Student Awards celebrate mathematical achievement, creativity and excellence in Australian schools.

The awards encourage students to get creative as they step beyond the classroom to bring their understanding of mathematics to life on film.

Get your classrooms buzzing with conversations about mathematics as students use their imagination to create and submit a 3–5 minute video based on this year’s theme, MATHS MAKES EVERYTHING POSSIBLE.

Event Newsletter Page 6 Burwood GHS

The aim of the competition is for students to produce a video which explains a mathematical problem, or demonstrates an application of mathematics, using clear and precise mathematical language, in a creative and entertaining way. Students compete as a team in order to foster a positive environment, giving them the opportunity to reason and work collaboratively.
