How do I begin to say goodbye to friends and colleagues who have been so spectacular throughout the years? The opportunity to become executive director-as a small part

time job- was too good to pass up at a time when I needed flexibility in my life. My husband, Michael was travelling a lot and I had a child at home who needed tending. Where else could I get a position that would suit my needs for a year or so that let me set my own hours? As I became invested in this position, I began to see that there are many ways to practice architecture: that of serving—and bettering—the architectural profession; advocating, educating, mentoring are some of the ways I have given back to our professional community. I had left the traditional role of design, which I loved. But I got a broader understanding of how important the American Institute of Architects is. “The Voice of Our Profession:” sounds so easy and is banal that its meaning almost becomes like a cliché. But I think we must get beyond the seeming simplicity of these words and remember the critical importance of supporting and volunteering your efforts and mine to the AIA. Without it, architects would be in such dire straights. Architects are often dreamers, great with designs, analysis, integration of many complex issues and ideas…but many are not great at speaking to the larger picture. Did you know that the construction industry with architects, engineers,

consultants, manufacturers, and contractors makes up over 25% of our gross national product? We are a critical part of our county’s health and vitality. It will never do to let non-professionals lead the way in these efforts to continue to care for the health, safety and welfare of our communities! I like that we have specialized advocates both at the state and national level looking out for our welfare (although we were sorely let down with California’s narrow minded insistence on architects being educated on ADA issues to the tune of 5 hours every 2 years. UGH!) It is our job to remind and educate the public that it is in their best interests to have an architect design something right the first time around. It is our job to educate the public that great design does not need to cost any more than bad design, or boring or indifferent design. The voice of our profession speaks not just to the public, but it works internally as well. How do we get to figure out what makes sense in this time of energy conservation? So this “placeholder job” became for me, a place of special meaning. This chapter is a place where we have made a difference. We won many awards, and grants, created many so may important programs. We laughed, we toured, we learned. And a year or two of a job became a passion for me that has stayed strong for the past 16 years. The chapter is in great shape right now. We have a sound financial base, we have an intriguing combination of new and old leadership that will continue to shift our vision towards the future. We have a new executive director: Desiree Gemigniani. (Yes, she is board member Richard Gemigniani’s wife. Thank you, Richard for recommending Des to us!!!!) It is my hope that you will give Desiree your support and passion as you have given it to me these many years. She is smart, energetic and full of ideas that will continue to help propel this chapter onward to continued prosperity and great achievements! Des is already planning next year’s golf theme: Octoberfest—or will that be: “Archtober Fest?” Just wait and see. She has jumped into her role with diligence and enthusiasm. I am here through this month of January turning over the reins to Desiree. She is not just running with them. She is jumping and doing a showmanship job of smooth transitioning. Way to go, Des!!! We are so proud of how you have effortlessly come into this role of executive director and I look forward to your shaping it and crafting it in new and exciting ways!!!! YOU have a great vision and great skills. We’re bound to enjoy to take on things. In any event, this is still my chapter, so I hope to continue to see many of you when I attend a program or two. (It will feel weird being on the other side of the check-in table, I can assure you!) And who knows, maybe in a year or two, I’ll even volunteer for something. Should I write: I’ll be back?!!!! But I hope to continue to see you all-and even have time to chat and catch up. I have been honored to serve you all for so many years. Keep the faith, keep the chapter, keep the laughter. With love and best wishes, Leslie Nathan, AIA

A Proper Thank YouDear Friends and Colleagues; I have begun to wrap up 16 years of memories to take with me when I retire as executive director. My last event will be the installation banquet and design awards on Saturday, Feb. 4th. How do I begin to thank all of you for your support and friendship? I started listing thanks to many people like Alan Bernstein, 2001 president and how we muddled through together; then there was John Grounds, treasurer par excellence. He went all the way up the AIA leadership ladder to become National treasurer of the AIA. Every president gave me new perspectives and insights. Joel Jaffe guided the chapter to become business savvy. Where would this chapter be without the brilliant efforts of Mark Smith whose wise council served well in good times and

brilliantly well in difficult times? Richard Gemigniani and Keong Ng have been there for the long haul, taking many leadership roles-especially the design awards chairs. And how do I even begin to list all of the golf leaders like Gus Duffy and Tim Saivar who were early chairs and then go onto our current golf members Murray Siegel, Pete Puzo, Jonathan Gilliam, Vladimir Elmanovich, and George de la Nuez? Matt Epstein and Kenny Lee have both been presidents twice and have served with leadership and distinction. Russell Myers and Max Williams both served in multiple roles and stepped up just when we needed them. Miguel Maio served as 2015 president and guided us through a difficult, financially challenging year. Robin Jaffe used to volunteer for everything! I still thank Tom Layman for graciously hosting the AIA/SFV chapter at his office for so many years. The chapter also owes a great debt of thanks for all of the years of active support from our friends Joe Balbona and Sylvia Botero at RBB Architects, Inc. They have always supported us in ways too numerous to mention. I thank you for all of your friendship and support. I miss friends like Rudy DeChellis, Larry Robbins, Jerry Pollak and Ron Firestone who were so active in our chapter. Brad McDonald and Rob Anderson brought much needed vision and laughter to our “reinventing” the chapter. We are stronger than ever thanks to their groundwork-as well as many others. Larry Kaltman has continued to act as IDP Design chair. Now we are calling it AXP (architect experience program since NCARB so recently changed their requirements as well as their name. Hopefully this will make the licensing process easier for many interns!) Mike Silva has been a great liaison to Woodbury University and Joel Jaffe gets huge kudos for all of his extraordinary work for the AIASFV Fund. Recently this fund was turned over to become a $150,000 chapter named endowment to the University. Art Yanez restructured Elevations and has long been the creator of our Design Awards banquet booklet and chapter directory. Miguel Renteria twinned the chapter with his home in Mexico and we became international. Jerry Pollak taught us the structure of creating an incredible urban assistance design team. With his vision the chapter has won great recognition in this field. And most of all, I want to publically thank my companion in crime-and at the office -for keeping things running so smoothly: Veronica Terpatsi. Unshakable, unflappable, always ready to dive into the next project that needed doing: that’s Veronica. Every month she typed in everyone’s names for continuing education credits, membership updates, invoicing, phone calling etc. Veronica, you are a trooper and a good friend! There are many names of people that I love and who have been instrumental in making this chapter as forward thinking and wonderful as it has become. I dearly thank all of you whose names I have not highlighted. To get to truth of it, I would have to write almost every chapter member’s name with a little blurb —you who have made this journey as meaningful as it has been. Thank you all for your support and encouragement. It’s been a pleasure working with you. With love and best wishes, Leslie Nathan, AIA
