European union •European union is a type of economic union and politicalunion of 27 European countries they are integrated for freeexchange of goods and services with in the union countries.

EVOLUTION OF EU •After world war 2 European countries want to economicaland political stability in Europe.•The idea of European union was proposed by Frenchforeign minister Robert Schumann (1950)

• In the initial stage OEEC was established , six countriesare integrated their economic (West Germany, France, Italy,Belgium, Netherland and Luxembourg)•The European coal and steel Community (ECSC) and the

European Economic Community (EEC), formed by sixcountries .•The European Union was formally established when theMaastricht Treaty came into force on 1 November 1993 .

Structure of EU Presently the EU includes 497 million people and has 23

official language .

OBJECTIVES OF EU

Promoting economic and social progress, achievingthe single market and single currency.

Affirmation of European identity on the internationalhumanitarian aid for countries, foreign policy andsecurity policy, involvement in resolving international

crises.The introduction of European citizenship: complementsnational citizenship and provides a European citizencertain civil and political rights.

To develop an area of freedom, security and justice: the

free movement of persons. The existence and consolidation in the law: all the legaltexts adopted by the European institutions together withthe founding treaties.

UnionThe operation of the EU has an agreed budget of €141 billionfor the year 2011, and €862 billion for the period 2007 –2013, thisrepresents around 1% of the EU's GDP. (According to IMF)The Risk Capital Facility is a €100 million Commission-

funded programme which aims at providing high-risk equity andquasi-equity funding to Small and Medium Enterprises whichcreating jobs, Increased numbers of new jobs particular women,they targeting 13,000 jobs by 2012 (at least 30% of these jobs

should be for women);

implementation in areas like rights at workand coordination of social security schemes

Stability and growth

Within a single market and major trading bloc like theEU, it makes good sense to coordinate nationaleconomic policies. This enables the EU to act rapidly

when faced with challenges such as the currenteconomic and financial crisis.

The benefits of the euro

Having the euro as a common currency for a large

part of Europe has made it easier for the EU to reactto the global credit crunch in a coordinated way andprovided more stability than would otherwise havebeen possible.

Climate action 

Protecting the planet One goal, lots of actions!

EU leaders have agreed a set of targets, to bemet by 2020, that have come to be known as the

"20-20-20 targets". These aim to: Reduce EU greenhouse gas emissions to at least

20% below 1990 levels

Increase to 20% the proportion of EU energy

consumption coming from renewable sources Reduce the amount of primary energy used – 

through energy efficiency - by 20% comparedwith projected levels.

Multilingualism
