What is a print embargo?

Journalists cannot publish stories about an embargoed article until the date and time of the embargo have passed.

Why post to EurekAlert! ahead of embargo?

• Journalists can use the release to prepare their stories, which can then be released immediately after the embargo passes.

• Journalists like this because their story will be read more if it is timely.

• In our experience, releases timed with article publication or those that are posted to EurekAlert! ahead of embargo do well with views/media pickup.• Example: Almost 15,000 views for press release about our

role in NIH HIV antibody study, published on same day as article.

What this means for you

• Let the EurekAlert! Working Group know of an upcoming or recent high-impact publication or other news that you think merits a release

• Send details (i.e., publication date, copy of paper) to [email protected]

• Provide a brief summary of MUSC’s role in paper. If an author has moved on to another institution, please note

Selection process

The EurekAlert! Working Group will not be able to do all requested releases due to limited resources. As resource allows, we will create press releases for:• Publications in the highest-impact journals, especially those

that involve translational research and those for which MUSC researchers and MUSC Health clinicians played a seminal role

• Publication, grants, etc. that position our strengths as an institution (i.e., special expertise, special core) and show our collaboration with other leading academic medical centers

• Publications in specialties that are of strategic interest (e.g., USNWR rankings)

What happens if you are selected?

› A writer will contact you to set up an interview. Make yourself available as early as possible for the interview.

› The writer working on your release will send you a draft of the release. Promptly review, make changes, and/or approve the draft of release. Note that the release will be written in a media-friendly style (not too much jargon).

› The writer may ask about available images to which you own copyright and that would be appropriate for a wider audience.

• MUSC can post as many as 100 experts who are willing to serve as a resource for the press when a story in their specialty comes out.

• As with releases, featured expert profiles help establish MUSC as a leading academic medical center.

• EurekAlert! Working Group will choose final 100 based on strategic priorities but is open to nomination via the [email protected] email.

Media Training

• Media training for experts is available via My Quest. Visit myquest.musc.edu, click on “Enroll” at the top, and then select “Browse Catalog” and look for the “Media Training Resources” module.
