Programme Outline

One day, Max and Teresa find some strange sounds coming out of their new neighbours garden. They think they hear sounds of wild animals. Teresa even believes that someone is kept inside their neighbours storehouse. They hear slapping, smashing and gunshots. What really happened in the storehouse? Only their new neighbour can explain that!

Communicative functions

1. To learn about the formation and use of words that imitate sounds

2. To recognize words such as roar, hiss, vroom, beep, bang that imitate the sounds associated with actions or objects

3. To recognize the use of interjections to convey emotions such as oops, uh-oh, argh in simple spoken texts

Suggested activities

1. Introduce the programme briefly.

2. Watch the programme together. Draw pupils attention to the sounds of the animals and the sound words on screen. In the later part of the programme, there are more sound words associated with actions and objects introduced.

3. This is a programme to develop pupils acute listening skills. They can learn about the use of onomatopoeic words to describe the sounds they hear. Onomatopoeic words are words that sound exactly or almost exactly the things they represent. Sound words can help readers imagine a scene or a story more easily while reading. Similarly, interjections such as Argh and Uh-oh can help readers feel the emotions intended to convey.
