    Fall Car Care: The Basics

October is National Fall CarCare Month and offers the per-fect opportunity for you to makesure your vehicle is ready tohandle the snow, sleet and freez-ing temperatures to come.

The following should beincluded in any winterizingpackage offered by your localrepair shop, but you can alsohandle many of them yourself.Make a checklist to ensure you

are covering all of your bases. Battery: It is important totest your battery and chargingsystem. A fully charged batteryin good condition means youwont be stuck with an enginethat wont start in cold weather.

Drive Belts: Inspect theunderside of your drive beltsfor signs of wear. The AmericanAutomobile Association rec-ommends replacing your beltsevery 60,000 miles.

engine hoses: Checkyour cooling system hoses for

leaks or loose clamps. You canalso feel and squeeze the hosesfor brittleness or sponginess.

tire pressure: Test yourtire inflation pressure more fre-quently in fall and winterbecause falling temperaturesmean falling tire pressures.

air filter: The AAArecommends you check yourcars engine air filter by holdingit up to a 60-watt light bulb. Iflight can be seen through muchof the filter, it is still cleanenough to work effectively. Ifthe light is blocked, it is time toreplace it.

lights: Properly workinglights are crucial during the falland winter months, when eve-ning sets in a little quicker.Check the operation of all head-lights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashersand back-up lights. Replace anyburned-out bulbs by following

the procedures stated in theowners manual.

Wiper BlaDes:Replace anyblade that leaves streaks ormisses spots. Winter wiperblades come wrapped with a

rubber boot to reduce ice andsnow buildup. Consider install-ing these if you live in areaswith heavy snow during thewinter.

Brakes: Have your brakeschecked and changed at the firstindication of a problem, usuallyidentified by a squeaking orgrinding noise.

Weve all heard about theimportance of winterizingyour car. But when should youdo so and how?

    Drivers Best Friend: Spare Tire

Maintaining the spare tirecan often be an afterthoughtuntil you need it the most.Luckily, with a simplecheck of the air pressureand accessibility to the tire, drivers can be prepared to

    safely change a tire.

    Tire PressureTire pressure drops one

pound per square inch (PSI)for every 10-degree drop intemperature, according tothe American Automobile Association. So check yourtires weekly.

The proper inflation pressure will generally be listed

in your vehicles owner manual and/or noted on a stickeron the inside of the drivers-side door. You can find a tire

pressure gauge for less than $20.

The Spare Tire MechanismIn most cars, the spare tire can be found under the

floor of the trunk in a reservoir that will also include awrench for removing the lug nuts and a jack for liftingthe vehicle. But on SUVs or trucks, the spare tire isusually suspended on a cable underneath the vehicle.

The cable mechanism must be maintained to ensuresafe, proper usage when you need it. Lower and raise thetire to see if the cable is moving freely. The last thing youneed is an inaccessible spare tire when youre stuck onthe side of the road with a flat.

If you have trouble moving the tire smoothly, spraythe mechanism with a rust penetrant. If that doesnt help

or if the cable seizes to move, it is time to repair it.

Changing Your TireHave you changed a tire before? Trying to do so for

the first time while battling winter elements snow, sleetor cold hands can be a definite obstacle. Here are somebasics to remember: Find a safe spot to pull your vehicle over. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers of

your situation. Use your wrench to loosen the lug nuts. Use the jack to lift the vehicle off the ground just

enough to where the tire spins freely. Remove the lug nuts, pull off the tire and place the

spare on the car. Use the wrench to secure the lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts as snug as

    possible.

In a pinch, a properly inflated spare tire can mean the differencebetween getting home safely and paying more than $100 for a tow. FOTOLIA

    Wiper Fluid Check and Change

Do you know what isin your windshield wiper

reservoir? It is recommend-ed that you add a solventsuited for cold weather assoon as summer ends.

It may cost you a fewdollars more at yourauto care center, butwill be well worth thespending if youre stuckin a potentially dangeroussituation. Look for fluidthat can stand up to freezingtemperatures, snow and ice.

The wintertime alsomeans your windshield willbe hit by sand, gravel or

rock salt spread on the roadby transportation crews

trying to keep them safe.Keeping your fluid tank fullfor the winter months willhelp you achieve maximumvisibility for all of these

    cold-season challenges.

    Changing Your

FluidThe process of changingyour wiper fluid is an easyone. Open your hood and lo-

    cate the reservoir, usually

    marked with a wind-

shield wiper icon on thecap for convenience.

Check the outside of thecontainer which shouldbe opaque to see ifyour coolant is belowthe required-level lines.

If so, add the appropri-ate quantity of properlydiluted fluid into the

    reservoir.

    Checking Washer

    PumpChecking your wiper

    system ahead of the winter

    freeze is important to en-

sure proper working order. If youre experiencing is-sues with the feature, youcan troubleshoot the pumpby turning your key tothe on position withoutstarting the engine.

Listen carefully whenyou try to use the washerfluid. Do you hear a hum-

ming sound? If youre hav-ing a hard time hearing thepump and there someoneis nearby, ask them to listenclosely.

If you dont hear anysounds, check the fuses. Theowners manual will explainwhich fuse belongs to thewindshield washer pump.If the fuses do not appear to

be damaged or worn, this isa sign that you may need to

    have the motor replaced.

Youre driving home from work in early Novemberand it begins to rain. The shorter daylight periodof the fall means your visibility is likely compromised. The falling temperatures mean the rain could quicklyturn to sleet.

It is also important to teach proper maintenance carefrom a young age. Doing so now will lead to a lifetime of

    responsible car ownership.

Sign a ContractA fun way to challenge your children to maintain his

or her vehicle is by creating and signing a parent-childcontract. Keep the agreement short-term to maintainyour teens interest in the practice and include tasks suchas weekly or monthly requirements like checking tirepressure, scheduling oil changes and topping off fluids.

If the parameters of the contract are broken, be readyto dole out a lighthearted punishment: Have them washand wax your car for you its a win-win.

Take a Class TogetherLocal community colleges, car groups and auto shops

put on community car classes that can be a great wayof sparking your childrens interest in vehicles. Even iftheyre not passionate about all things cars, taking a classcan help foster an understanding and respect for propervehicle maintenance and emergency situations.

With the amount of free video content online, you

can also attend a DIY class together on the Internet.Find maintenance and basic service videos and watchthem together, taking notes with any questions for

    follow-up.

Tell them StoriesTeenagers have a lot going on. If you want them to

remember the importance of proper car care, tell themvisual, impactful stories about what can happen to carsin neglect. Dont rely on scare tactics; rather, focus onsharing personal experiences about what you have gonethrough or witnessed.

Have you been stranded on the side of the highwayafter skidding on the ice? Tell your story and then fol-low-up with tips on how to safely steer through a similarsituation.

Maybe you were once completely locked of yourfrozen car? You can teach them the importance ofkeeping a can of de-icing solution on hand for these pre-dicaments, as well.

    Avoid the Holiday Breakdown

That figure is an estimation by the American Automo-bile Association, which is ready to deploy its assistancespecialists to help with lockouts, battery replacements, jump starts, extricating vehicles from snow and towingcars for repair.

The AAA anticipates its busiest time of year to be be-tween December 19 and January 2. And while beingstranded on roadway is probably not on your wish list, itis an issue you or someone you know may have to face thisholiday season.

Be PreparedDrivers can avoid some roadside breakdowns by keep-

ing their vehicles properly maintained. The AAA advis-es motorists to follow their recommended maintenanceschedule and make sure their vehicle is ready for the holi-

    day travel season.

Have a certified technician check your vehicles fluidlevels, lights, brakes, exhaust system and heater/defroster.you should continue to schedule regular services, includ-ing oil and filter changes, throughout the winter drivingseason at the intervals recommended by the vehicle manu-facturer.

Common IssuesEvery year during the holiday season, this is how AAA

service calls are broken down: Nearly 300,000 requests for help with a dead battery. More than 80,000 failed batteries repaired on the spot. Nearly 200,000 sets of keys retrieved from inside lockedvehicles. More than 166,000 tire changes. About 21,000 vehicle extrications.

Handling Being StrandedThe AAA projects its roadside technicians can fix the is-

sues of more than three out of five stranded motorists andsend them on their way. The remaining two travelers willstill need a tow.

Keeping you and your family safe while yourestranded is important. This means pulling your car fullyonto the shoulder of the road and keeping your hazardlights flashing.

You could also benefit from having an emergency kit fullof blankets, batteries, water, flashlights and other essentialitems to keep you safe and warm during long delays.

Every year, as tens of millions of travelers take the road fortheir holiday trips and vacations, at least one million

people will be stranded. But many of them would be ableto avoid these problems if they started planning in the fall.

    CHELLE CORDERO

It may seem like we are watch-

ing a The Jetsons rerun as we

    hear about the innovations and

technology on automotive drawingboards. In addition to sleeker aero-

    dynamic designs, luxury interiors

that feel more like living rooms

    than motor conveyances, entertain-

    ment and comfort additions, and

    safety enhancements, we can also

    envision cars that drive themselves,

    have automatic braking to avoid

    collisions, and offer more power

    while burning less fuel.

Just a few of yesteryears fu-

    turistic concepts that are present

    day realities include GPS, voice

    activation, speed control, built-in

DVD players, variable windshieldwipers, air bags, intelligent parking

assist, heated seats, car CD chang-

    ers and even seatbelts. Automobile

    designers and science-ction fans

alike imagine all sorts of enhance-

ments, some solely to impress and

    others that increase safety, relive

stress and make the drivers life

    easier.

    Car shows throughout the world

    commonly display the latest and

    greatest in advanced designs. Spec-

tators get a hint of things to come,

    while manufacturers get to judge

the audience reaction as well as the

practicality of a design. It could

take a few years before the concept

    undergoes recommended changes,

becomes a prototype and is made

available to the public. Until then,

we catch glimpses, hear chatter and

    wait (im)patiently for these tech-

    nology-laden vehicles.

First unveiled at the 2012 New

York Auto Show, the Honda Acura

NSX, a hybrid-electric sports car is

    scheduled for release by Hondas

Acura luxury division in the 2016

model year. The supercar is pow-

    ered by a mid-mounted, direct-

    injected V6 engine from Hondas

    Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-

Wheel Drive system with a gas/

electric power plant and up to 400

    horsepower hybrid synergy drive

system. The interior is designed to

t the driver as if the human and car

    were one.

Toyota is turning a lot of heads

    with the Japanese introduction of

    its information network social elec-

tric city transporter concept car. Its

    a one-seat vehicle with responsive

    owner facial recognition. The cars

smart system not only unlocks the

doors for its recognized owner, but

also allows the owner to use voice

    activated navigation and a phone

app to control the car remotely. In

the U.S., Toyota revealed an urban

utility concept, the Toyota U2, with

a roll back roof, fold down tailgate

into a ramp and customizable rail

system interior. The U2 interior can

be modied to hold anything and

    everything a sophisticated urbanite

    needs including bikes and bike

stands, the passenger seat can also

be removed for more room. In ad-

    dition to great storage capability,

the U2 has improved fuel economy

    and good maneuverability on busy

    city streets.

    Luxury relaxation, living room

or business ofce accommoda-tions, driverless technology and

    sliding (transferable) steering

wheels were some of the features

    the Swiss automotive dream facto-

ry Rinspeed unveiled at the Geneva

Auto Show earlier this year. The

    Rinspeed XchangE autonomous

    electric concept vehicle features a

large info-ready screen in lieu of a

    traditional dashboard, swivel seats,

    touch responsive controls and a

    steering wheel that works with

    steer-by-wire technology, similar

to that found in jet aircraft, instead

    of a mechanical steering column.

With this, you can easily slide the

steering wheel to your passenger to

    share driving.

    Scheduled to begin production

in Louisiana next year, Elio Motors

    is touting its two-seat, inexpensive,

    three-wheeled, 84-mpg Elio as the

    most economical vehicle to buy

(under $7,000) and run. The Amer-

    ican-made Elio features an electric

powertrain small gas system and a

    light, aerodynamic design that can

hit up to 100 mph. Elio equipment

includes disc brakes with ABS, 15-

    inch wheels, a ve-speed automatic

    transmission, and independent

    suspension with unequal length

    control arms, coil-over-spring and

shock in the front, and mono-shock

with coil-over-spring and shock inthe rear. The major impediment to

    this concepts mass production and

    availability is its three-wheeled

    design. Most states consider this

a motorcycle and require a motor-

    cycle license and helmet.

    Todays designers of concept

cars are focused on the environ-

    ment, accident prevention, func-

    tionality and transportation to t

    current lifestyles.

    All About Snow Tires

When it comes to driving through winter weather, your tires are the ones that take the brunt of the punish-ment. But you can arm your tires to make sure you reachyour destination safely even when the snow makes itdifficult to do so.

SnowMany car-makers and repair technicians recommend

mounting snow tires to your vehicle before the winterdriving season. These specially designed tires are made tohelp you trek through the snow even in areas of heavyaccumulation.

If you choose to go down this route, be sure to splurgeon all four tires. Your alignment can be thrown off if youdrive on two standard and two snow tires, and that cancause bigger problems for your vehicle down the road.

And keep your standard tires handy. Once the winterlets up, youll be happy to get them back on your vehicleto improve your fuel efficiency and overall handling.

All-Season TiresAnother option is all-season tires that you drive year-

round winter and summer. This will help you avoidhaving to remember to change your tires before the win-ter weather or needing to store two sets of rims.

While all-season tires are more effective than a stan-dard tire, you wont get the full advantage of having spe-cialized snow tires on your vehicle. These tires are de-

signed specifically to help drivers blast through snow andare tested vigorously for this purpose.

Tire Type and TreadSnow tires are the recommended options in areas with

heavy winter weather. But you may still decide to stickwith your regular tires for price or convenience purpos-es. If you do, be sure to check the tread depth of yourtires. Replace any tire that has less than 3/32 inches oftread, the American Automobile Association stated.

Check multiple spots on the tire when assessingyour tread depth. Uneven tire wear can indicate align-ment issues, out-of-whack wheel balance or suspensionproblems that must be addressed to prevent further tiredamage.

Dashing through the snowon worn-out or ineffec-tive tires isnt as merry as itsounds.
