Enlighten yourself, your team, and your organization
Education, truth, and virtue, Wilhelm von Hum-
boldt wrote in 1793, must be disseminated to
such an extent that the concept of mankind takes
on a great and dignied form in each individual.
To achieve this, the individual had to absorb the
great mass of material offered to him by the world
around him and his inner existence . . .; he must
then reshape that material with all the energies of
his own activity and appropriate it to himself so as
to create an interaction between his own person-
ality and nature in a most general, active, and har-
monious form.
This quote demonstrates the holistic approach of
ESMTs Executive Transition Program (ETP), which
centers on the knowledge and capabilities that are
the prerequisites for your transition to general
manager. Throughout the program, we will relate
and come back to the ideas of Wilhelm and his
brother Alexander von Humboldt, two great thinkers
whose essential knowledge and independent minds
enabled them to make outstanding contributions
to their elds.
In this tradition, the ETP will help you take your
career to the next level. You will learn from world-
class faculty and guest lecturers, men and women
who have successfully made the very same transi-
tion you are about to make people who have ties
to leading universities and have worked inside the
most successful global companies. Their insights
and perspectives will enable you to think, act, and
make decisions as a senior executive.
In short: The ETP is an intensive, transformational
experience that will help you make the critical leap
from manager to leader. At the same time, you will
benet from the diverse set of professional and
personal experience that your fellow participants
bring with them.
Your personal leadership journey begins with a
rigorous education in the advanced study of gen-
eral management. The knowledge, skills, and tools
you acquire will assist you throughout your career
and provide you with a solid basis for lifelong
achievement.
In the same spirit that guided the remarkable
brothers Humboldt to reach their own potential
more than two centuries ago, I invite you to dis-
cover yours today at ESMT. Join us.
Sincerely,
Urs Mller

4 Executive Transition Program 20112012
Building a new global mindsetYou are about to embark on one of the most satis-
fying as well as the most challenging moments
in your career. The transition from manager to
leader will require you to leave behind a role and
a function very familiar to you. You will need a
different mindset to succeed in this new environ-
ment, with strategic and cross-functional thinking
to manage the challenges that come with new
roles and responsibilities.
The ETP offers you a truly global perspective. You
will see a clear link between your efforts and mar-
ketplace results. You will shift your thinking from
a short-term, functional perspective to a long-term
outlook that takes into account social and business
concerns. You will then return to your company
with the ability to lead others and to lead your-
self to your fullest potential.
Realizing your companys investmentMajor investments deserve equally handsome
returns. That is why the ETP is designed to help
you achieve measurable outcomes throughout theprogram. As the programs three two-week mod-
ules are spread out over 10 months, the ETP lets
you pursue your advanced business studies with-
out taking extended leave. This will allow you to
bring new tools, ideas, and concepts back to your
company in between sessions. You will be able to
immediately apply them to ongoing tasks in your
new leadership role. As a result, you and your com-
pany can both quickly realize a strong mutual benet.
Achieving your fullest potentialMore than a professional credential, the ETP is a
rich, transformative experience that will help you
transcend your boundaries. It will challenge you to
combine European perspectives with a global mind-
set to make lasting contributions to all of societys
stakeholders. The core set of skills you acquire will
enable you to explore a wide variety of career
options throughout your lifetime with condence.
During seminars, team exercises, workshops, simu-
lations, company visits, guest lectures, and discus-
sions, you will engage in open dialog with faculty
and fellow participants. While learning to rely on
your own rational and critical thinking, you will
interact with a talented group of participants
from diverse cultural, educational, and professional
backgrounds.
Uniting classical values with a modernperspectiveThe ETPs unique combination of classical values
and modern business education is reected in the
programs attractive locations. Our rst module willbe held at our Schloss Gracht campus near Cologne.
The second and third modules will take place on
ESMTs campus in Berlin. One week of our second
module will be a eld trip to Brussels to explore
the inuence and impact of the European institu-
tions on Europe and on foreign investment in
European countries.

Angela Merkel visited Siemens Signalling Company
SSCX in July. SSCX won the top+ award of the SMART growth
category during the Siemens business conference in Berlin. Heike
and Urs of ETP visited Xian. I received the ETP certificate.

membership in the ESMT alumni network. This
includes participation in events and reunions such
as the ETP Salon, periodic updates on school activi-
ties, access to industry-specic networking groups,
and the use of the on-campus information center
facilities and services.
There are usually several transitions in a professional
career. But the move from functional to general manage-
ment requires a fundamental change in capabilities,
skills, and attitudes. After the ETP, I was appointed chairman of
the board. I am happy to have attended the ETP, which gave me
the opportunity to learn, experiment, develop, and build a net-
work of great people from very different backgrounds while
preparing for my transition.Michael Kiesewetter, Chairman of the Board, Investitions- und Frderbank Niedersachsen NBank, Hanover, Germany

1. Application/conrmationIn order to participate in a program, the contracting
company or organization is asked to fill in the
application form, indicating its full company name
and address as well as the participants name. The
form should be returned to ESMT signed by an
authorized representative of the company or orga-
nization. After thorough evaluation, ESMT will notify
the contracting company or organization of the
acceptance by letter; this notication will then con-
stitute a binding contract.
By signing the application form, the contracting
company or organization conrms the acceptance
of these general terms and conditions and agrees to
pay any tuition fees or cancellation fees resulting
from this agreement.
2. Cancellation policyWhere the participant is unable to attend, and
where the contracting company or organization is
not in a position to transfer his/her place to an-
other person, the following cancellation charges
apply: registrations cancelled 56 days or morebefore the event will not be charged; cancellations
received fewer than 56 but more than 30 days
before the event will be charged at 25percent of
tuition fees; registrations cancelled fewer than
31 but more than 14 days before the event will be
charged at 50 percent of tuition fees; registrations
cancelled 14 days before the event or fewer will be
charged at 100 percent of tuition fees; 100 percent
cancellation charges also apply in case of failure to
attend the program without prior notice.
ESMT may cancel events at short notice if the mini-
mum attendance is not met or any other complica-
tions occur that are beyond ESMTs control (e.g.,
illness of the speaker/trainer, force majeure). In
such cases, ESMT will seek to establish an alternative
date. If ESMT cancels the event, fees that have
already been paid will be reimbursed. Further legal
claims, for example reimbursement of job absen-
teeism, travel costs, or hotel expenditures, will not
be met. ESMT is under no obligation to offer the
same program in the future.
Because our educational processes build on exten-
sive group work and in-class participation, admis-
sion to the program requires full attendance.
3. Place of fulllment and jurisdictionAs far as legally permitted, place of fulllment and
jurisdiction is Berlin for both parties. German law
