Objective / Goal: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to give excuses for not being able to attend certain events or go places with friends in Spanish. Aim: What are some phrases you can use to decline an invitation and give a reason for doing so? Do-Now: Take out the reading worksheet from yesterday. Underline any statement that you think might be a reason or excuse for not being able to go somewhere. Focus and Review: Go over the do-now. Write student responses on a document that is projected in the front. Teacher Input: Use a power point to go over popular excuses and reasons for declining an invitation: No puedo ir porque: No quiero Estoy… Cansado / Ocupado / Enfermo Tengo que trabajar Tengo demasiada tarea No me gusta… Guided Practice: Students will work with a partner to complete a communicative activity which will allow them to generate questions and responses using only the pictures and one-word cues given on the worksheet (see below). Communicative Activities such as this one are a good way to get kids speaking extemporaneously in the target language without putting them on the spot or telling them exactly what to say in English. Independent Practice: After they finish the communicative activity, students will work individually to read a worksheet which consists of e-mails from different people responding to another person’s invitation to a party. See “e-mail” worksheet below.
