The little neigh and ChristmasS anta Claus left a

message askingKalo, the new FirstElf, to call the an-

nual meeting at its regulartime, Midnight, Jan. 2. Thatis the official starting time ofthe new toy building season.

It is when plans are made fornew products, or whenchanges would be made toexisting toys. He asked Kaloto awaken him at noon, 12hours before the meeting.

Santa was very firm aboutgetting things done on

schedule. By being awaken-ed at noon, he had time totake a leisurely bath, visitwith Mrs. Claus, eat a goodbreakfast, check his mailand see how the reindeerwere doing after pulling thesleigh on Christmas Eve. He

would also have time tocheck on the elves and ev-erything at the North Pole.

Kalo was not going to belate, he didn’t want to disap-point Santa Claus. He want-ed to be the very best FirstElf Santa ever had. He hadbeen appointed to the posi-tion as Santa left to delivertoys to all good boys andgirls around the globe.

Today he was continuinghis tour of the toy shops inthe village. He had startedlooking in on the toy shopsthe morning of Dec. 26, afterhe and the other elves fin-ished celebrating Christmasand had attended church.

He enjoyed touring theshops. It gave him a chanceto meet all the other elves, many of whom he had never

met before. He knew most ofthe department managers,as he had been manager ofthe Hobby Horse Depart-ment before being appointedFirst Elf.

There are many depart-ments at the village: dolls, trains, jack in the boxes, wrapping, computers, electronics, storage, paint-ing, polishing, toy soldiers,

BB guns, fishing equipment, and many, many more. Eachmanager had a list of em-ployees, what supplies theywould need, how many elvesthey needed to add, or couldbe moved to other depart-ments, who was retiring ormight be ready for more re-sponsibility.

The list went on and on.Kalo had to be certain everyshop in each departmenthad what they needed, butno more. Efficiency was ex-tremely important, as wassafety, but most important ofall: everyone was to be hap-py.

While Kalo was at the hob-by horse shop, he and Orly, the new Shop Manager de-cided it was time to let thecolt that was born two yearsbefore, go to work. Hewasn’t needed at the hobbyhorse shop, so it was decid-ed to let him go where hewas needed most.

The colt had never beenformally named and Orlythought it would be a goodidea to have a contest to pickthe right name. Everyone inthe village could enter.

Kalo took had taken care

of the young horse while hewas shop manager at thehobby horse shop and hetook over care of him oncemore, while the contest wasgoing on. There was a smallbarn and corral near the cen-ter of the village where thecolt could be safe and warm.It was close to Kalo’s office, near Santa’s home and wasan easy place for everyone tofind, so they could look atthe colt and think of a name.

Kalo remembered the daythe cold was born to Dolly, one of the horses used as amodel for the hobby horses.

He was brown, with awhite mark on his head, shaped exactly like a Christ-mas tree. Everyone was sohappy when he was born.Even Santa and Mrs. Clauscame to the hobby horseshop to see him. What ex-citement he caused when hewas born, and now there waseven more excitement be-cause of the naming contest.

Kalo would give the win-ning name to Santa Clauswho would announce thename and decide who thecolt would be given to.Names came pouring in

from everyone. Even Mrs.Claus entered a name.

Kalo was almost over-whelmed, but he worked ex-tra hard in his office. What atough decision. There wereso many good names; Light-ning, Flicka, Brownie,Champion, Banjo, Trigger,Mr. Jim, Tony, Leo, Frosty,Cedar, Wonder, Bud, Noel,Pine, and many others. Ev-eryone thought theirs wasthe best, but none of thenames seemed to be justright.

On the day of the meeting,Kalo hadn’t made up hismind. He was nearly tearinghis hair out, he was so wor-ried about finding the per-fect name. It was almost

noon and he hadn’t awaken-ed Santa yet.

He was very fond of thecolt and often day dreamedabout him. He had fed andcared for him for most of thecolt’s life. He fed him onlythe best hay, brushed thelittle guy and cleaned hisstall. He taught him to carrya rider and to pull a sleigh.

When Kalo was tired ofdoing office work and beganto get grouchy he would of-ten go to the barn and talk tothe brown horse. He’d tellhim all about what wasgoing on in the village.

All at once he heard thepounding of hooves on thestreet in front of his office. The colt was neighing and

neighing, trying to get Kaloto open the door. He begankicking the door and tryingto neigh louder, but hisvoice was very little.

When Kalo finally got tothe door and ran outside tosee what was going on, thecolt stood by the steps, as ifhe wanted Kalo to get on.

Just then Kalo heard thevillage clock begin to chime. It was time to awaken SantaClaus. Worried about pick-ing the right name for thecolt, he had forgotten toawaken Santa Claus. Hejumped on the colt’s backand they ran all the way toSanta’s house. They gotthere just as the clockchimed 12.
