We loaded Frostyand Cedar intothe trailer andit took us all of

20-25 minutes to be in the

park and another few min-utes to park and get themunloaded.

One of the primary rea-sons we like Estes Park isthe above sentence. We loveto ride, and we have as gooda place to ride as there isanywhere.

Its easy on the horses. They dont mind riding inthe trailer, or at least theyload up very easily. In fact, when you start them in,youd better be ready to go

    with them.

Frosty is first and he stepsin, takes the two or threesteps to the front of the trail-er, turns and moves his buttover so I can tie his leadrope where he wont step on,or over it and simply closethe divider. Occasionally, Ihave to say, get over, butusually not. Then I offer hima piece of cake, but he willprobably not take it. Once ina while, he indulges me and

    eats it.Catherine will have Cedar

at the door, I get hold of therope, pivot and tie the leadrope for her. Thats how

quickly she loads. Shealways eats the cake I offer. They stand, swishing their

tails as we curry them downand spray them with insectrepellent. Im not sure whywe do that. It doesnt lastvery long and they seem toswish their tails, stomp theirfeet and wiggle their hide torid themselves of flies aftertheyre spayed just as muchas before we spray. If theyget a sweat up, the repellentseems to disappear entirely. As long as they dont sweat

too bad, I can smell the bugspray, so at least I feel likewere doing some good.

Frosty has probably beensprayed several hundreds of

times and acts like hes nev-er had it done before. He tol-erates my attentions, but hehas to move around a bitwhile I spray him.

Catherine sprays Cedar, gets some on her hands andwipes Cedars ears, all overher face and that mare ofhers just leans into her likeshes cuddling up to Cathe-rine. Its fun to see.

When were saddled up,its like those two horseshave just been waiting on us.They stand well while we

mount and they dont moveuntil we let them, but assoon as we squeeze ourknees, we are on two horsesthat want to go somewhere.

Let me tell you, if youvenever had the joy of it, ridinga horse that doesnt need tobe urged every step of theway is wonderful. I dont liketo have to push a horsewhen Im riding. I dontthink there is anything moretiring than being on a horsethat you have to kick onestep and smack it with thereins the next. We dont withFrosty and Cedar, and goshits nice.

As you all know, Ialways promoteeating and drink-ing everything in

    oderation. And when it

omes to alcohol, the sameis true. Its always a hugefactor with individuals whendiscussing their diet andconsumption of food andbeverages. Beverages areoften forgotten or not catego-rized appropriately for theimpact they play on every-ones diet and weight loss

program. In reality, they canmake or break every diet.

I have a member who fre-quently drops off their CalBerkeley Wellness Letterafter they are done reading itstimulating my brain cells onwhats happening in the

orld of health and fitnessesearch. Coming from this

onths edition (July 2013,ol. 29, Issue 11), the very

ast topic entitled, Lastord, is about weighing in

on alcohol, an important top-ic that does affect our healthin various ways.

Alcohol contains a lot ofcalories. So the question thatthe Cal Berkley newsletterasked is, does it causeweight gain? With all things

being equal, if you simplyadd alcohol into your diet, rather than drink/eat it inplace of other caloric bever-ages or food items, youllgain weight. As far as purealcohol goes, one gram sup-plies nearly twice as manycalories as a gram of carbo-hydrates or protein (7 vs. 4).

But alcohol calories may bedifferent from other calories, according to some research,in that they are burned less

efficiently. Calories fromalcohol are, in effect, a littleless fattening than caloriesfrom carbs or fat, meaningthat we burn and store them

    differently than carbohy-drates.

The research on alcoholand weight loss has yieldedinconsistent finding. Statis-tics show that, on average, drinkers are no more likelyto be obese than nondrink-ers. But many variables areinvolved, including the

amount of alcohol con-sumed, the type of beverage, the timing, setting and pat-tern of consumption, andphysiological and psycholog-ical factors.

Gender, as expected, alsoplays a role in how alcoholaffects body weight. CalBerkeley Wellness letter

quotes from a Harvard studyin the Archives of InternalMedicine, 2010: normal-weight women who had one

or two drinks a day gainedless weight over a 13-yearperiod than non-drinkers.They also said that women, unlike men, tend to substi-

tute alcohol for other caloricfood or drink items.

A more recent study, which came out in the Amer-ican Journal of ClinicalNutrition, compared the foodand calorie intake of anationwide sampling of 1,864people on days when theydid and didnt drink alcohol.

On the drinking day, themen consumed 433 extra cal-ories, on average, the majori-ty coming from alcohol(363). The rest of the calo-ries came from foods andother beverages. However, men consumed more pro-tein, fat, sodium and meat onthe drinking day than they

    did on their non-drinkingday.

In contrast, women con-sumed an extra 299 calories,on average, on the drinkingday, with almost all of themcoming from the alcoholicbeverages. They didnt eatsignificantly more food thanon other days, though they

also tended to eat more fatand less healthfully on thedrinking days.

Overall, the study lookedat isolated days and said

nothing about changes inbody weight or long-termdietary patterns.

If you are tr ying to watchyour caloric intake, alcoholcan make you less focusedon how much youre eating(this is called dis-inhibition),which might lead to overeat-ing. Thus, most diets dont

include or always advise lim-iting alcoholic beverages. Also, remember there is avast oppor tunity of otherissues surrounding andassociated with alcohol con-sumption.

So back to one of mycore beliefs. Its alwaysand completely about moder-

ation. No matter what youeat, drink or do, what youput into your mouth mustequal or be less than whatyour body does in movementfor the day. Whether its aBig Mac, a bag of carrots ora martini, you must countthe calories, add the exer-cise and understand the con-

sequences. Once again, itsthe simplest equation in theuniverse. In=Out.
