Gospel: Luke 2:4152
“Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be
in my Father’s house?”

Gospel Teaching:
In this Sunday’s Mass, we celebrate the Feast of The Holy Family
and hear the only story in the Gospels (apart from the infancy
narratives) that includes all the family members Jesus, Mary
and Joseph. We hear of a family that celebrated the Jewish feast
days in a devout manner, by traveling to Jerusalem. We hear
that the 12 year old Jesus stays behind when the feast is over to
learn more about the Law. The quote above shows that Jesus
was aware of his divine nature, but he also understood that he
was part of a human
family when, “He went
down with them and
came to Nazareth, and
was obedient to them”.
There are duties within
the family parents
teach and protect their
children; and children
honor their father and
mother.

The union of man and woman that establishes family life is a
sacred reality at the very foundation of the social order.
Bonded in love and in obedience to the Lord of Life, the family
reflects the holiness of the Holy Family, centered on Jesus. By
the grace of union with Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, family life
with its challenges and its joysbecomes a path to holiness.
“The Christian family is a communion of persons, a sign and
image of the communion of the Father and the Son in the Holy
Spirit. In the procreation and education of children it reflects
the Father’s work of creation. It is called to partake of the
prayer and sacriFce of Christ. Daily prayer and the reading of
the Word of God strengthen it in charity” (CCC 2205).
