I Please be ConsiderateWe have been getting reports from the membership of people being inconsiderate of others around the range. Luckily, these issues are not so much safety issues as etiquette concerns. For example, if you like to listen to loud music while shooting at the Pistol Range, don’t crank up your

car stereo in the parking lot. Look into hearing protection that has Bluetooth so that you

can use a music app on your smartphone. When you are finished shooting, please clean up after yourself. This includes trash, brass (yes, even 22 brass) and targets left on the range. If you encounter someone violating proper etiquette, don’t start yelling and getting confrontational. Ask politely that they correct the behavior and offer to assist with a remedy. You get more bees with honey than you do with vinegar.

I Make Time to Attend a General MeetingBring a friend to the next General Meeting and one or both of you could win a few bucks. At the last General Meeting, Robert Smith won the $25 door prize and he graciously donated it to the Junior Marksmanship Program. Had he attended the meeting, Eric Thaanum would have won the $500 Attendance Prize. The next General Meeting is 3/8/2018. If you don’t show up, you can’t win.

I Donor List (2/8/2018)Thanks to all who donated to the raffle table at the last General Meeting – Al Anzelone, Joyce Alessio, Jim Beck, Ray Bucholz, Pamela A. Tucker, Lonnie Fowler, Peter Winokar, Michael McKinney, Ren Everett, Wayne Brunner, Brian Rasmussen, Smoldering Bud Smith, Mark and Laurel Baldwin, Eric Elstin, Neil Pisk, Ray Osgood, Tim and Fransiuse Geiser

I Be a Raffle DonorYour donations help support our monthly General Meeting Raffle. Our entertainment Chairman is Bud Smith. If you have items you would like to donate to our monthly General meeting raffle, please contact Smoldering Bud at [email protected] Please consider new or used items in working order. Thanks for your support.

I Membership Renewals Coming SoonThe annual membership renewal forms will be mailed out at the end of April 2018. If you or someone you know has moved recently, please be sure that the Association Clerk has your correct and current mailing address. Please contact Juli Everett at 760-432-2089 or [email protected] to submit and/or confirm mailing information.

I Work Party (2/18/2018)Aint’ no party like a Working Party! I got that from Patrick Russ who did a yeoman’s job of transcribing the names of the participants from the Green Sheet. We had perfect weather and a fantastic bunch of volunteers who showed up ready to git-er-done. As usual, we cleaned the hill and did lots of landscaping tasks around the property. A lot of it was removal of brushfire fuel and a lot was done to prune and prepare the roses for the next blooming season. We had a total of 88 people that showed up to make a difference. I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank and identify them by all name right here and now but we had one small problem – Patrick could only decipher 87 of the names. In the future, please be sure to write your name clearly and legibly any time that you are signing in on a Green Sheet. If you know anyone on this list, please be sure to thank him/her for his or her service to EF&GA. I NRA Metallic Cartridge Reloading Class (3/3/2018)Although ammo has plentifully come back to the market there are California restrictions (Prop. 63) that have been generated to hinder such purchases both in-store and on-line. The opportunity to learn reloading techniques that will allow you to produce timely, consistent, accurate ammunition while receiving NRA certified reloading instruction is available on March 3rd, 2018.The First Part is strictly academic in structure and conducted at the EF&GA meeting hall. This session (8:00 AM 3/3/2018) will last until approximately 12 noon. The Second Part is a “Hands On” reloading bench experience. This session generates the practical, detailed experience necessary while you successfully complete a number of your personal reloads. Scheduling the second session will be at a mutually agreed to time and date. This scheduling will be completed at the 1st session. The cost is two tiered: EF&GA members = $100; non-members = $110. For those individuals beginning and are without any reloading supplies (empty cases, powder, primers, etc.) a $10 surcharge will be applied. Prior registration and a $20 deposit is required to secure a place in this class. Registration is necessary and limited. For more information, contact Elvio Marchi at [email protected] or 760-734-3942I Wanted Dead or Alive - RangeMaster VolunteersBy Jay ZimmettActually I would prefer alive and need to rustle up some additional volunteers to help keep our range safe.An active RangeMaster needs to complete at least one full shift per month managing the range. A shift is 7am-12, 12-5pm and in spring/summer 5pm-Sundown. Impress your friends with a stylish Red Hat and matching t-shirt. Also active Rangemasters get invited to RMAD (RangeMaster Appreciation Day). We get to shoot and pig out!For information, contact Jay Zimmett at 858-735-2354 or [email protected]

I High Power Match Cancelled (3/10/2018)Due to scheduling issues, that High Power Match will not be convening on March 10th. It will continue as normal on May 12th, 2018. Contact Paul Hendrikson (760-522-4660) for more information.

Dossier Continued From Page 3I NRA Concealed Carry Class (4/14/2018 & 4/15/2018)Please note that this two-day class will be held in April on Saturday the 14th (Classroom) and Sunday the 15th (Range). This is the NRA’s advanced pistol class and students (adults 21+ who must have prior intermediate or greater experience/training in the safe use of, and legally be able to use handguns) will shoot their own handguns and ammunition. This class includes a full day on the range with exercises that provide increasing challenges through advanced drills that demonstrate principles of concealed carry, the draw, defensive shooting, movement, single, multiple and moving threats, use of barriers, and situational awareness. The classroom session includes review of the course textbook, flashlight techniques, laser trainers, and other important information to compliment and reinforce the range sessions and the essentials of concealed carry. This class includes both the Basic and Advanced NRA Certificates upon successful completion. This class is listed on the NRA training website under Self Defense, NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home Course at: https://tinyurl.com/y82v6uaw To reserve your spot and for more information, email or call Bill Magdych: [email protected] 858-356-4019. Prior registration is required. Open to the public (register and pay by March 23 for a discount and EFGA members receive an additional discount).

r a n g e M a s t e r s o u n d o f f

I Iwould like to take a moment to introduce myself as your new Chief Range Master and thank CRSO Tim Geiser for his many contributions to

the Association.

My qualifications for this position include many years as the EFG&A Assistant CRSO, NRA Chief RSO instructor, Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) RSO Instructor, and most importantly, as Chief Cook at the Jr. Rifle shoot (I have the apron to prove it).

My shooting passion is Cowboy Action and the Old West. You may also see me at the Trap range on occasion with my beat up, 100+ year old Winchester 1897 long barrel shotgun (yeeha)!

I may at times slip into old forms of “Cowboy Justice” for range infractions, in which I may fall back into some old cowboy colloquialisms such as: “Get the rope” or “Drag him through the cactus” – nothing to worry about.

But in all seriousness, my philosophy in managing the range has always been Safety First and providing an environment where everyone can enjoy their time at the range.

We have a great group of dedicated RSO’s that volunteer their time and energy in order to make this a safe and fun facility. As you visit the range, please take a moment to say “Hi” to our dedicated volunteers. If you do run into the “Old grumpy guy in the faded red shirt” and have an unpleasant experience, I would like to know about it. It’s my job to ensure that we are all respectful of each other.

“I won’t be wronged. I won’t be insulted. I won’t be laid a hand on. I don’t do these things to other people and I require the same from them.” – John Wayne

Hot Range (lights off), Cold Range (lights on) Confusion

The phrase “Hot” means the range is ACTIVE; there are people shooting. You may safely handle your firearm(s) (pointing down range) and move equipment from/to your car and the shooting line. Do NOT go Down Range (past the Red Line).

The phrase “Cold” means the range is INACTIVE; there are no people shooting. You may NOT handle any firearm(s), ammunition, magazines, etc. You may NOT move equipment from/to your car or off the shooting line. You may, however, go Down Range and handle targets.

Handling any equipment when the range is “Cold” gets my “Cowboy Justice” eye twitch started. Please leave your equipment alone; stay behind the yellow line. Also last one off the cold range please turn off the lights.

BLacK PoWder neWsBy Garth Warner

Last Contest: January 28th was our first Super Short Range event of the year. This contest also included our first Black Diamond Cap and Ball Revolver contest. Ray Buckholz provided a huge “Black Diamond” buffalo trophy for first place. Fourteen people showed up to compete. This marks the largest revolver turnout we have had for the last few years. Joe Jelinek took top honors and the trophy. Neil Pisk was the last man standing in the Zombie Pumpkin Defensive Shoot.

Next Contest: Our next event will be on Sunday March 25th. This will be a Mid-Range contest with rifle targets at 75 to 125 yards. ALL pistol contests are shot at 25, 50, and 75 yards.Pistol start time is 08:30. Rifle starts at 10:00. If it is raining, (could happen?), we will set up for a Super Short Range. Jr Muzzleloading is scheduled for March 11th. Contact Neil Pisk or Ren Everett to register.

Thank YouGarth Warner

Get the Lead OutWe have been periodically mining lead from the Pistol Range. We are not doing this to make a profit; we do it to be good stewards of our land. When we mine the Pistol Range, we stack the sandbags full of dirt that was sifted out in the mining process. The sandbags also help control erosion. The lead that is recovered goes to a metal recycling company and they provide us with documentation that the lead has been removed. We have also had contractors mine the lead shot from the hillside on the Trap Ranges. The reclaimed shot is for sale and EF&GA members get it at a reduced rate. It will work for reload-ing but it is also great for making a heavy-bag to use on a shooting bench. If you want to pur-chase some of the reclaimed shot, contact Dan Dorman or Neil Pisk for details. We are also working on getting another con-tractor to mine more lead from the Trap Range, Pistol Range and the Rifle Ranges. We are now in the early stages of interviewing contractors and getting cost quotes for the services. In the coming months there could be scheduled range closures and other considerations that may be required to facilitate the lead mining. We will keep the membership informed as we receive more information.

How to place a classified ad

in the newsletter Please help to keep the classified section easy to read and well organized. There is no cost as long as you are an EF&GA member in good standing. Classified ads run for ONE newsletter (one month). If you want to repeat an ad for another month (with price adjustments, etc…) simply re-submit the ad request via e-mail.

Please submit requests for classified ads via email to [email protected] and be sure to double-check for spelling and grammar errors.

It may sound obvious but requests for classifieds are frequently received with not enough information to be useful to a reader. There are 5 main components of a classified ad:

Category – Most classifieds fall into one of 3 catego-ries, ‘For Sale’, ‘Wanted’, or ‘Lost & Found’.

Subject/Title – This will appear in bold in the advertise-ment. This should be short (2 or 3 words) and concise.

Description – This is the body of the advertisement and can be a few sentences but not more than a paragraph. Abbreviations appear cryptic and are not recommend-ed unless they are well known acronyms.

Price – A specific dollar amount as well as qualifiers give the reader important information. For example, “$600 or Best Offer, Buyer pays DROS, Will consider trades”

Contact Info – This should be a name AND a phone number (including area code) and/or an e-mail address.

Stepping UpBy Kestrin Walsh (10 1/2 years old)As you probably already know, EF&GA has many junior programs, and outstanding coaches. This is a story about how they have built me to this point.First, let’s start off with Sparks, the primary range safety officer for junior trap. About 1 ½ years ago, I found out what a Sparks class is. It is a funny, celebrate every hit class. This was my first time shooting trap, so I felt nervous, but by the end of that class after hitting to many birds to count, Sparks made me feel at home. Because he was the primary range safety officer, I also learned a lot about safety of both myself and others.Another person who has helped me is Laurie Bresnahan. Most people think she is just the ammo girl that helps with the junior programs, but no, she is so much more. As I have stated in the previous paragraph, I felt nervous and insecure so Laurie helped toughen me up by encouraging me to go out there and outshoot all the boys. Third, I also went to the junior muzzle loading program. This was an awesome experience because muzzle-loaders are different than most other guns. Thanks to Ren Everett, I learned the safety behind the 1800’s gun. Thanks also goes to my coach who helped me get a 77 out of 100.When I started junior pistol a few months later, I met Patrick Russ, also a great impactor, I have to say. At my first pistol shoot, I feel like I learned a lot from Patrick. He has a nice sense of humor, while empathizing a safe range. When I first went to junior rifle, which Patrick serves as primary range safety officer, I became a junior coach. With a lot of help from Laurie, she persuaded Patrick to test me and I became his youngest coach. What this whole article is about is acknowledging the coaches. Many thanks also go out to Chris Cote for helping me get a 328 in rifle and Ken Halbert for the junior coaching program. Thank you to all of the coaches.

Try More Shotgun EventsMany of us come up to shoot Trap and shot from the 16 yard line every time and once we get a 25 Straight, we are happy and continue trying to get 50, 75, 100 straight… still from the 16 yard line. There are more events that involve clay targets and shotguns. Come out on the 2nd Wednesday of the month and try shooting Dou-bles. It’s a whole different challenge because you need to hit both birds before they hit the ground. 5-Stand is another great challenge that has lots of diversity of how the targets appear and how you need to shoot them. Whenever I think that I’m getting pretty good with a shotgun, I try a different discipline and remind myself that I still have a lot to learn.
