ERIKSON’S STAGES

Every person goes through many changes as they grow old. These stages can be characterized by a psychological “crisis”. These crisis’ must be resolved by that person before and the way they develop through each stage will effect them later in life.

STAGE 1- ROCK A BYE BABY, (UNKNOWN ARTIST)• Trust vs. Mistrust. (0-12 months). Babies must be able to blindly trust their parents or their caregivers.

• Lyrics: Rock A Bye Baby, On The Tree Top,

When The Wind Blows, The Cradle Will Rock,

When The Bow Breaks, The Cradle Will Fall,

And Down Will Come Baby,Cradle and All.

STAGE 2- OLD MCDONALD HAD A FARM, (ADAPTED BY SUPER SIMPLE LEARNING)• Independence vs. doubt. (1-2 years). Toddlers learn to do things for themselves and learn self control

and self confidence.

• This song represents this stage because toddlers tend to be learning animal sounds and things like this and it’s a simple song for little kids to sing along to.

• Lyrics: Old McDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O. And on that farm he had a COW. E-I-E-I-O. What does a COW say? Meow? Oink? Moo? With a moo moo here. And a moo moo there. Here a moo. There a moo. Everywhere a moo moo. Old McDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O. Old McDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O.And on that farm he had a HORSE. E-I-E-I-O. What does a HORSE say? Woof woof? Moo? Neigh? With a neigh neigh here. And a neigh neigh there. Here a neigh. There a neigh. Everywhere a neigh neigh. Old McDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O. Old McDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O.And on that farm he had a PIG. E-I-E-I-O. What does a PIG say? Quack? Tweet, tweet? Oink? With an oink oink here. And an oink oink there. Here an oink. There an oink. Everywhere an oink oink.Old McDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O.

STAGE 3- ABC’S SONG (ARRANGED BY A.J. JENKINS)

• Initiative vs. Guilt. (2-6 years old.) Motor skills develop and they become very social.

STAGE 4- AIRPLANES, (KIDSBOP VERSION)

• Industry vs Inferiority. (6-12 years old). School is important and children learn a lot as they transition from the world of home to the world of school.

• This song represents this stage because kidsbop is clean versions of songs that are popular (like this one that was popular when we were in this stage). But its appropriate for this age group and parents approve of it more.

• Lyrics: Can we pretend that airplanes In the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now. Wish right now, wish right now. Can we pretend that airplanes In the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now. Wish right now, wish right now. Yeah, I could use a dream or a genie or a wish. To go back to a place much simpler than this 'Cause after all the partyin' and cashin' and crashin‘. And all the glitz and the glam and the fashionAnd all the pandemonium and all the madness. There comes a time where you fade to the blackness. And when you starin' at that phone in your lap. And you hopin' but them people never call you back. But that's just how the story unfolds. You get another hand soon after you fold. And when your plans unravel in the sand. What would you wish for if you had one chance? So airplane, airplane, sorry I'm late. I'm on my way so don't close that gate. If I don't make that then I'll switch my flight. And I'll be right back at it by the end of the night.

STAGE 5- THE MIDDLE (JIMMY EAT WORLD)• Identity vs. Role Confusion. (12-18 years old). Adolescents are trying to figure out who they are at this stage, and

they must integrate the resolutions of the earlier conflicts and stages to do so.

• This song represents this stage because it has a positive message that this age group probably needs, and adolescence can sometimes feel like it is “the middle” of life.

• Lyrics: Hey, don't write yourself off yet It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on. Just try your best, try everything you can. And don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away. It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride. Everything (everything) will be just fine, everything (everything) will be alright (alright). Hey, you know they're all the same. You know you're doing better on your own, so don't buy in. Live right now. Yeah, just be yourself. It doesn't matter if it's good enough for someone else. It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride. Everything (everything) will be just fine, everything (everything) will be alright (alright). It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride. Everything (everything) will be just fine, everything (everything) will be alright (alright). Hey, don't write yourself off yet. It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on. Just do your best, do everything you can. And don't you worry what the bitter hearts are gonna say. It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride. Everything (everything) will be just fine, everything (everything) will be alright (alright). It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride. Everything (everything) will be just fine, everything (everything) will be alright (alright).

STAGE 6- I AM A ROCK (SIMON AND GARFUNKEL)

• Intimacy vs. Isolation. (19-20 Years old). Most important events are love relationships. An individual needs to have developed a strong sense of identity before this stage or they’ll fear commitment and retreat.

• This song represents this stage because it relates to the negative side, the isolation that you can feel at this stage.

• Lyrics: A winter's day In a deep and dark December; I am alone,

Gazing from my window to the streets below On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow. I am a rock, I am an island. I've built walls, A fortress deep and mighty,

That none may penetrate. I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain. It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.

I am a rock, I am an island. Don't talk of love, But I've heard the words before; It's sleeping in my memory. won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.

If I never loved I never would have cried. I am a rock, I am an island. I have my books And my poetry to protect me;

I am shielded in my armor, Hiding in my room, safe within my womb. I touch no one and no one touches me. I am a rock, I am an island. And a rock feels no pain; And an island never cries.

STAGE 7- FATHER AND DAUGHTER (PAUL SIMON)• Generativity vs. Stagnation. (40-65) Ability to look outside oneself and care for others. This is the

stage where parenting is important, adults need children as much as they need adults.

• This song represents this stage because its written by a father to his daughter and is about that.

• Lyrics: If you leap awake in the mirror of a bad dream And for a fraction of a second you can't remember where you are Just open your window and follow your memory upstream To the meadow in the mountain where we counted every falling star I believe a light that shines on you will shine on you forever And though I can't guarantee there's nothing scary hiding under your bed I'm gonna stand guard like a postcard of a Golden Retriever And never leave 'til I leave you with a sweet dream in your head [Chorus:] I'm gonna watch you shine Gonna watch you grow Gonna paint a sign So you'll always know As long as one and one is two There could never be a father Who loved his daughter more than I love you Trust your intuition It's just like goin' fishin‘ You cast your line and hope you get a bite But you don't need to waste your time Worryin' about the market place Try to help the human race Struggling to survive its harshest night [Chorus 2x]

STAGE 8- ALL THINGS MUST PASS (GEORGE HARRISON)• Integrity vs. Despair. (65 years- Death). A time for reflecting on one’s own life and it’s role and

seeing it filled with satisfaction or disappointments.

• This song represents this stage because he’s accepting the fact that everything has to die at some point and that’s okay.

• Lyrics: Sunrise doesn't last all morning A cloudburst doesn't last all day Seems my love is up and has left you with no warning It's not always going to be this grey All things must pass All things must pass away Sunset doesn't last all evening A mind can blow those clouds away After all this, my love is up and must be leaving It's not always going to be this grey All things must pass All things must pass away All things must pass None of life's strings can last So, I must be on my way And face another day Now the darkness only stays the night-time In the morning it will fade away Daylight is good at arriving at the right time It's not always going to be this grey All things must pass All things must pass away All things must pass All things must pass away
