4 EQUINE PERFORMANCE

A DENTIST’STALEby kATE ATTARD, EqD

For a person who lives, breathes and dreams about horses, being an Equine Dentist would have to be the most rewarding job on the planet. Horses teeth are amazing! Not only can you specifically age a horse from its teeth, they also cause changes in physical appearance, problems when being used in their specific discipline, health problems can be enhanced and they can create a bad attitude!

Unlike our teeth, horses teeth continue to grow throughout their life at around 2 to 3 mm

per year. Horses have what is called an anisognathic mouth. What this means is that their skull is wider than their lower jaw so in order to chew the horse can only perform this action on one side of the mouth at a time. Because of this head anatomy and the way in which they grind their food, the horse develops sharp buccal edges (or cusps) on the outside of the upper molars (near the cheeks) and lingual cusps on the inside of the lower jaw (near the tongue).

In a natural world, this would be all that the horse would probably develop but because we have changed the way in which the horse now lives (housed, fed high, fed processed food, fed only a few times a day rather than constant grazing), the mouth and its function starts to change. Horses which are fed high develop sharp ramps and hooks due to the lack of wear of the molar arcades. Their incisors don’t wear as they should because they no longer have to “incise” the grass as the food is already chopped for them.

CASE STUDy: From Scrubby to Studdy! bILL 5yo bLACk STANDARDbRED

Bill is now a gallant handsome horse with much more control and speed. When Bill was first seen, he had a large number of vices on to stop him running out when racing and a very severe bit to stop him pulling.

When first treated, just by looking at him I could tell he had hooks and ramps, his incisors were too long and he wasn’t getting the full grind from his molars, therefore not breaking the food down. His manure contained whole grains of food, he had a bloated/ gassy gut, he had no rump, his coat was dull and he looked like he had a headache!

During the races he would race fierce and was a little uncontrollable and wasn’t finishing his races.

After an initial examination it was clear why this horse was doing all the things wrong. He had a massive ramps on the number 11 (or last tooth in the arcade) in the lower jaw. His teeth were in poor shape!

Now look at him! The results speak for themselves!

Page 5: Equine Performance Pty Ltd

Feed at ground level to avoid the formation of hooks and ramps.

Once these are removed by a specialist, they will come back if you don’t feed low (costing you more to have them removed again!)

Routine examinations are important to detect, correct and maintain the proper and efficient dental workings of the equine mouth. Every 6 to 12 months is a good time for checks to take place. Before the horse is 5, many changes occur in the mouth with new permanent teeth erupting and baby caps extracting. Once the horse gets to an age of 16 or so, the teeth start expiring!

HOT TIP

SOME INDICATIONS OF DENTAL PRObLEMS

EQUINE PERFORMANCE 5

Head throwing whilst riding

Tilting of head whilst eating

Lack of condition

Longer than normal particles in faeces (This can lead to colic)

Only eating soft leafy parts of hay, dribbling of feed

Bleeding from mouth and bad breath

Hard to bit, lack of contact, hard to stop

Excessive salivation or drooling

Colic

Troubled expression or general bad attitude

Hanging in or out, requiring vices

Lack of pelvic hip flexion

Trouble extending, jumping

DID yOU kNOW?Retained caps on the molars of the uppers can cause • lameness in the front feet whereas retained caps on the lowers can cause lameness in the back feet…

A watery eye or runny nose can indicate the horses • teeth are not erupting correctly. Usually the tooth is starting to come in contact with the sinuses causing this problem. In severe cases the horses skull can become “puffy” from these protuberant teeth.

Horses get colic from bad teeth. Because they cannot • properly chew the food, it enters the body not properly processed which can lead to clumping and colic.

rearing bit

bit Pinching is a major problemThe arrow shows how the bit depresses onto the tongue the point is driven into the horse’s tongue thereby pinching sometimes to the point of cutting it. The nutcracker action of a jointed snaffle bit will constantly pinch the tongue, causing pain, discomfort and encouraging the horse to try to put it elsewhere over the bit. The more mouth pain you inflict, the more fear in your horse, the more disobedient and difficult your horse is to control.

Tongue Ties cause damageMany horses do not tolerate having their tongue tied tightly, which has the potential to cause harm. Many horses resent these types of restraints which cause pain and for the horse to throw their head around and perform dismally. Horses can have their tongues tied for long periods of time which can cause long term damage. Champion trainers and riders have found since replacing tongue ties with the Winning Tongue Plate Bit that the horses are happier easier to ride breathe better and perform lengths better.

bit Pinching causes pain to other facial nervesBit pinching may cause pain signals to spread to any other branch of the same facial nerve, resulting in pain in areas of the face that have no direct contact with the bit resulting in headshaking, pulling, poor performance and more.

WTP bIT How it worksA humans tongue is attached to the bottom of the mouth the same as a horse. Put a finger across the crease of your mouth you can raise your tongue over it. If you put two fingers in the roof of your mouth you can still roll your tongue back. Then put two fingers on top of your tongue you can’t roll your tongue up neither can the horse with the Tongue plate bit. This simply overcomes the many problems encountered by the horse. The Winning Tongue Plate lays gently across the tongue and under the bit joint preventing the bit from pinching the tongue “no more pain”. The Tongue Plate prevents the horse getting the tongue over the bit and also stops them from pulling hard.

WTP bIT Stops displacement of the soft palate

Trainers and riders have stated that the winning tongue plate stops displacement of the soft palate as it encourages the horse to keep their tongue in a forward and natural position. View their impressive trial reports on our web site and try a Winning Tongue Plate bit.

WTP bIT can help prevent bleeding in horseLack of oxygen can contribute to horses bleeding due to a horse getting his tongue over the bit, rolling the tongue back or from displacing the soft palate. The winning tongue plate bit has proven to prevent and eliminate these problems.

WTP bIT can reduce the horses heart rateRead the qualified expert reports on our web site. Testing was conducted using a heart rate monitor and trainers stated they found their horses recovered faster after work because of the WTP bit. Their heart rates were down by between 5-10 points due to the bit keeping the horses’ tongue in the correct position, helping the horse to receive the necessary oxygen and they were less stressed therefore performing better.

The WTP bits are now available on our website www.equineperformance.com.au or contact us on 1300 886 968 to order yours today!
