    Definition of Juncture

    Juncture is pause in utterance, but it is

    something more than merely a pause.

    It is accompanied by slowing the rate and

    changing the pitch of the voice immediately

    preceding the pause

    The transition or mode of transition from one

    sound to another in speech

    distinguish between such similiar phoneme

    sequence.

    o Example :

    2. LEVEL JUNCTURE | / | :

    o SINGLE BAR JUNCTURE | / | : This is a terminal

    juncture that is marked by a sustention of the

    voice. This pause determines a change in the

    sense or meaning of the expression. It is used

    in long sentences. Long sentences are broken

    up into rhythm units. A rhythm unit may end

    in a pause that is preceded by rising normalintonation.

    o It can be used in the mid of utterances and at

    the end of utterances.

    o This junctures mainly used in yes or no

    questions.

    o This is external junction that means A RISE IN

    PITCH, also called Double Bar Juncture.

    4. Rising-falling Juncture ( # ) orDouble Bar Cross Juncture

    It is used at the end of utterances thatterminate in rising-falling intonation,between sentence in a text and as

    fullstop. It indicates a fading away intosilence.

    For example:

    This suitcase is awfully heavy.
