This three-day, hands-on course teaches you the fundamentals of ecological modelling and gives you an introduction on how to develop an ecological model using MIKE HYDRO River ECO Lab. Focus is on 1D systems (rivers, channels, streams, etc.). Depending on the level of your experience and specific wishes topics can be added or tailored course offered.

Ecological modelling is used to describe and simulated various process and phenomena of ecosystems. It is usually applied to model water quality aspects, the fate of dissolved substances or biological relations on population or individual level.

ECO Lab is a numerical modelling tool for ecological modelling integrated in MIKE HYDRO River, which gives easy access to the equations of an ecological model. MIKE HYDRO River ECO Lab is used for rivers and streams as it is capable of simulating the spatial distribution in 1D of variables in the environment.

In this one-day, hands-on course you will receive an introduction to AMB ('Agent Based Modelling') Lab and how to set up simple agent based models in the MIKE FM modelling complex.

The ABM Lab module allows you to formulate agent based models within the MIKE FM series of hydrodynamic environments of the MIKE by DHI framework. ABM Lab is a flexible numerical laboratory where you can define agents, their behaviour and their states. The Lagrangian ABM Lab can work with hydrodynamics alone or it can be combined with the Eulerian ECO Lab in order to make the agents react to water quality parameters.

ABM Lab allows you to address questions that are beyond the scope of traditional water quality models. Therefore, agent based modelling has received much attention in recent years.

This two-day course teaches you the fundamentals of 2D/3D oil spill modelling using flexible mesh and how to set up and model the fate and transport of oil using the MIKE 21/3 Oil Spill model (OS) FM.

Oil spills pose serious threats to water environments and place massive pressure on the entities that are responsible for the emergency response and clean-up operations, such as oil companies and national authorities.

The Oil Spill module simulates the spreading and weathering of suspended substances using a dedicated oil spill template. Oil spill modelling is important for emergency response planning and environmental impact assessment. Oil spill models predict the spreading and weathering processes acting on the spilled oil. Results can be evaluated with respect to the impacts on flora, fauna and selected species or habitats.

This 1-day course teaches you the fundamentals of underwater acoustics modelling with the aim of being able to carry out biological risk assessments of environmental noise impacts for e.g. wind farms, seismic surveys, shipping, dredging and other human activities.

Marine mammals and other marine life face threats from many different human activities, including fishing, habitat destruction and man-made noise. Increased background noise and specific sound sources can impact marine animals in several ways. The potential impacts include sounds that cause marine animals to alter their behaviour, prevent marine animals from hearing important sounds (masking), cause hearing loss (temporary or permanent), or damage tissue.

The Underwater Acoustics Simulator (UAS) module in MIKE simulates propagation of noise in the far-field with a state of the art Range dependent Acoustic Model (RAM). UAS provides the option to specify a number of outputs in terms of sound exposure level or transmission loss depending on the objective of the environmental risk assessment.

This three-day course provides you with an understanding of an EIA, its structure and implementation. Finally, you will be introduced to the Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix (RIAM - developed by DHI), receive a copy of the software as well as be trained in using it.

EIAs have always suffered from subjective judgements that are difficult to quantify and present, leading to the criticism of EIA as a tool with insufficient transparency.

Good EIAs are based upon decision support tools, knowledge and skills. Water quality assessments are carried out all over the world and most systems are well structured, and with a variety of sampling frequencies. In this two-day, thematic course you are given an overview of the physical processes of dredging and reclamation and their impacts on marine environments. The focus is on the environmental impacts of dredging and reclamation projects and the available tools and procedures that can help to sustainably manage these projects both during the design and implementation of the works. The course includes stakeholder analysis and stakeholder involvement in the management of dredging and reclamation projects.

Coastal environments have diverse environmental receptors sensitive to potential impacts arising from dredging and reclamation. These include habitats such as coral reefs, natural resources such as fisheries, economic resources such as water intakes and socio-cultural resources such as tourism facilities. Coupled with the fact that the physical processes of currents and waves can transfer the potential impacts of dredging and reclamation many kilometers from the work area, it becomes clear that the management of environmental impacts of dredging and reclamation is a challenging activity.

This two-day, thematic course provides an overview of the most important parts of the European Bathing Water Directive and gives an introduction to real life cases of good management of bathing water and different early warning methods. The course includes a field trip to relevant beaches/ sites in Denmark.

Recreational use of water can deliver important benefits to health and well-being. Yet, there may also be adverse health effects associated with recreational use if the water is polluted or unsafe. Clean water is essential to ensure the health and safety of the bathers.

Good bathing water management is the key to minimise health risks while maximising the recreational value as well as the revenue of bathing waters. This two-day, thematic hands-on course introduces modelling and analyses of relevance for marine renewable energy projects. It enables the practitioner to understand the benefits and limitations of metocean design data and provides guidelines on how to develop these. The course is focused on our ‘Best Practices’ for coastal and offshore projects for wind turbines wave and tidal power and marine infrastructure projects.

Project managers and others working with coastal or offshore projects are facing the forces of nature and must develop reliable designs, able to withstand the waves and currents in harsh environments and at the same time harness the energy of the oceans to the benefit of society

This two-day thematic course provides the theoretical basis for the modelling of integrated urban water systems. It includes some interesting case studies of practical applications and hands-on exercises based on the WEST software package.

Both policy makers and the industry are increasingly realising the necessity of adopting an integrated approach to water management. Urban water management presents big challenges, but also great opportunities to minimise both the impact on the receiving water (and on the environment in general, e g energy and materials consumption, pollutants emission) and any costs. Options like water quality based real time control, sewer operation minimising odour and corrosion problems, global sewer control, construction of retention volumes and treatment facilities, water reuse, nutrient recovery, can be better designed and evaluated by using models, which include the interaction between all units involved. Optimising individual subsystems may not be the best solution for the entire system. The integrated assessment of the system provides the opportunity to develop holistic solutions and/or provide the justification for prioritising implementation plans in a manner that will provide the best value and greatest benefits for the receiving water.
