There is another kind of maritime transportation and they are called “Pangas”. These are small boats that take passengers to different beaches or islands and serve as water taxis. You can take them at different spots according to where are you going (Check our map section on page 33):

- Going to a beach South of the Bay (like Yelapa or Quimixto) take a panga at Boca de Tomatlán.

- Going to a beach North of the Bay or the Marietas Islands take a panga at El Anclote.

- You can also take a panga at the Malecón and at Los Muertos beach.

Hay otro tipo distinto de transporte marítimo y son las llamadas “Pangas”. Se trata de pequeñas lanchas que llevan pasajeros a diferentes playas o islas y que sirven como taxis acuáticos. Where?

South of Puerto Vallarta, between Gemelas and Mismaloya beaches. It’s a cluster of islands with reefs, tunnels, caves and abundant marine life.

Al sur de Puerto Vallarta, entre las playas Gemelas y Mismaloya. Está formado por varias pequeñas islas con arrecifes y túneles, cuevas, arcos y exuberante vida marina.

Desde 1984 es considerado parque nacional, marino y submarino protegido

por el gobierno mexicano. Santuario natural para la reproducción de

pelícanos y pájaros bobo.

What to Do?Because of its big and deep granite stonewalls, that goes from 26 to 65 feet and to its extraordinary biodiversity, it’s an ideal place to practice snorkeling and scuba diving. With depths from 30 to 1600 feet the waters surrounding Los Arcos are the deepest in Banderas Bay and are full of lobsters and plenty of different species of fish that eats from the reefs. A session of night diving is highly recommended.

¿Qué hacer?Puesto que cuenta con las más grandes y profundas formaciones de granito, que varían de 8 a 20 metros y a su extraordinaria biodiversidad, es el sitio ideal para el que desea hacer esnórquel o buceo. Con profundidades desde los 10 hasta los 480 metros, las aguas que rodean Los Arcos son las más profundas de toda la Bahía y se encuentran repletas de langostas, cardúmenes de peces ángel, globo, trompeta, loro y cirujano, entre otros, que se alimentan de los arrecifes superficiales. Una sesión de buceo nocturno es altamente recomendable ya que se pueden ver distintas especies de rayas, mantas gigantes y pulpos.

Contrary to what most people believes, it’s not the Cathedral of Puerto Vallarta, but certainly the most important religious center in the area. Its construction began in 1915.

Contrario a lo que la mayoría de la gente piensa, no se trata de la Catderal de Puerto Vallarta, pero ciertamente es el centro religioso más importante del área. Su construcción se inició en 1915.

The Crown (La Corona)It’s a symbol of the city and the legend says that it’s inspired on the crown that used to wear Carlota, wife of Maximilian of Habsburg, emperor of Mexico in the 19th century. It got deeply damaged with the earthquake of 1995.

Es un símbolo de la ciudad y cuenta la leyenda que se trata de una réplica de la corona que usara Carlota, la esposa de Maximiliano de Habsburgo, quien fuera emperador de México en el siglo XIX. Quedó severamente dañada tras el terremoto de 1995.

Mass (Misas)As the home of the Catholic faith in Puerto Vallarta it offers mass for residents and tourists, with services in English and French. Every Saturday and Sunday there is a bilingual mass.

Como sede de la fé católica en Puerto Vallarta, celebra misas para residentes y turistas, con servicios en inglés y francés. Cada sábado y domingo se lleva a cabo una misa bilingüe.


Very few towns in Mexico have changed so much in the last years as this interesting community hidden between the jungle and the Pacific Ocean. I remember that when I went there for the very first time, nearly twelve years ago, you have to get off the bus that was going from Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta and walk a good while from the highway to the outskirts of the town. Once reaching town, we kept walking following the little river that we knew had to get to the sea and that’s how we found that mythical place where we had heard that you could just put your tent and enjoy a couple of days of peace, so far away from the noise of the discos and clubs from the nearest “malecón”.

Pocos pueblos en México se han transformado tanto en los últimos años como esta interesante comunidad escondida entre la selva y el Océano Pacífico. Recuerdo que la primera vez que lo visité hace casi doce años, había que bajarse del autobús que iba de Guadalajara a Puerto Vallarta y empezar a caminar por la carretera un buen trecho hasta llegar a la entrada del pueblo. Después seguíamos caminando por la orilla del riachuelo que sabíamos tenía que llegar al mar, para así encontrar ese mítico lugar donde uno podía poner su casa de campaña en plena playa y disfrutar de un par de días de paz y tranquilidad, tan alejados del bullicio de las discotecas del malecón más cercano.

receive “good vibes”.

Walking around Sayulita there is a smell of other places, a little bit of Coyoacán in México City, a little bit of the mystical town of Tepoztlán in Central México, a little bit of California with its surfers and even, a little bit of that London neighborhood of Camden Town where the punk movement was born. It’s a beautiful place ideal for surfing and making friends with a beer at hand and some spontaneous music coming to our ears from the most unexpected places. It´s a place that will always be “groovy” and where you will always receive “good vibes”, a symbol of a relaxed attitude towards the world, of a way of travelling different to that of the big resorts, an option that is worth to try, where life tastes more real, authentic and personal.

This is Sayulita today, a place to feel free and away from civilization, but with “WiFi” coffeeshops, clean restrooms, adequate medical equipment and cabs at hand, just in case we feel the urge to go back to our modern reality.

Cuando se camina por Sayulita se respira un ambiente que recuerda a otros lugares, un poco de Coyoacán, un poco de Tepoztlán, un poco de California con sus tablas de surf y un poco incluso del barrio londinense de Camden Town, cuna del movimiento punk. Es un hermoso lugar para surfear y hacer amigos, con una cerveza en la mano y música espontánea llegando a los oídos desde el rincón más insospechado, un lugar que siempre será símbolo de “buena onda”, de una actitud relajada frente al mundo, de un estilo de vida diferente al de los grandes hoteles, una opción distinta que bien vale la pena probar, donde la vida sabe más auténtica, más natural, más personal.

Todo esto es Sayulita hoy en día, un lugar donde uno puede sentirse libre y alejado de la civilización, pero con cafés “WiFi”, baños limpios, adecuadas instalaciones médicas y taxis a la mano, por si en cualquier momento sentimos nostalgia por nuestra realidad moderna y deseamos volver a ella.

Beautiful beach surrounded by an amazing tropical forest. There you can take the “pangas” (water taxis) to Las Ánimas, Majahuitas, Yelapa and Quimixto. While there, don’t miss the chance to swim in its tranquil waters and eat some great seafood. It’s 15 miles South of Puerto Vallarta by the highway to Barra de Navidad and you can take a bus from Basilio Badillo St.

Mascota

Small group of islands declared by UNESCO as a “Biosphere Reserve” for its extraordinary biodiversity. Perfect place to watch the whales and practice scuba diving. To get to the islands you have to go first to El Anclote, a town 25 minutes North of Puerto Vallarta by the highway to Punta Mita. From there you can get a water taxi to the Marietas or you can take an organized tour.

Pequeño conjunto de islas declarado por la UNESCO “Reserva especial de la Biósfera” por su extraordinaria biodiversidad. Lugar perfecto para ver a las ballenas y para practicar el buceo. Para llegar a las islas hay que ir primero a El Anclote, un pueblo a 25 minutos al norte de Puerto Vallarta por la carretera a Punta Mita. Desde ahí salen las lanchas a las Marietas.

Known as “The emerald of the mountains”, is one of the best preserved towns in the state of Jalisco and it’s a perfect place for a camping expedition on the mountains, or staying in cozy cabins. It’s just 56 miles East of Puerto Vallarta by the highway to Mascota, but there’s a big change in weather so don’t forget your sweater.

Conocido como “La esmeralda de la sierra”, este pueblo montañoso es uno de los mejor conservados en el estado de Jalisco y es perfecto para una pequeña expedición para acampar en las montañas. Se encuentra a sólo 90 kms al este de Puerto Vallarta, por la carretera a Mascota, pero no olvide su suéter porque el clima es más fresco.

Small bay surrounded by the jungle, where the Mismaloya river finds the sea. This beach became world famous when John Huston decided to film “The Night of the Iguana” in the 60’s. It’s 13 miles South of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz Airport by the highway to Barra de Navidad.

Hermosa caleta rodeada de selva, donde el río Mismaloya desemboca en el Pacífico. Esta playa se volvió mundialmente famosa cuando John Huston decidió filmar ahí “La Noche de la Iguana” en los años 60’s. Se encuentra a 21 km al sur del Aeropuerto Gustavo Díaz Ordaz siguiendo la carretera a Barra de Navidad.

Bohemian and surfing town, with an interesting approach to life in a kind of“laid back” style. It’s a colourful village where many expats have found a home and started their own bussines. If you visit just one beachtown in the area, you should visit this one. It’s only 20 miles North of the Airport by the highway to Tepic.

Pueblo bohemio y con playas perfectas para la práctica del surf. Este pueblo tiene una “onda” muy interesante, con mucho extranjero que se ha estab-lecido en el lugar y ha abierto sus propios negocios. Si sólo visita un pueblo de playa en la región, éste es el que debe visitar. A sólo 32 km al norte del Aeropuerto Gustavo Díaz Ordaz por la carretera a Tepic.

“Place where the waters get together”, is a small town with only a few hotels and very little electricity. Retirement site for artists and meeting point for hippies. It’s 27 miles South of Puerto Vallarta but to get there you need to take a water taxi at Boca de Tomatlán.

Rincón de Guayabitos“The biggest natural swimming pool in the world”, of a mile and a half length and 25 yards wide, with its easy waves and warm water all year round make of this little town, the perfect place to practice aquatic sports. 28 miles North of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz Airport by the highway to Tepic.

Where? (¿Dónde?)The market is right on the Cuale Island, which is believed was created after an overflow of the river caused sediment to collect in its center. The Cuale river is at the end of the Malecón and just before the Romantic Zone. On the western side of the island, bordering the bay and Insurgentes St. you will find lots of colourful stands, that’s the market!

The Malecón is the place where everything happens, where you can feel the pulse of the city and hear its rythm. During the day, this walk by the sea is a place for culture and arts, with plenty of sculptures along the path and lots of street artists performing. But once daylight is gone, “El Malecón” becomes the place of music, dance and party. As the night goes by, the restaurants give way to numerous nightclubs established on this beautiful street.

El Malecón es el lugar donde todo sucede, donde se le puede tomar el pulso a la ciudad y sentir su ritmo. Durante el día, este paseo que bordea el océano, es un lugar especial para la cultura y las artes con numerosas esculturas a lo largo del camino y diversos artistas callejeros que actúan para todo el que quiera verlos. Pero una vez que la luz del día desaparece, el Malecón se convierte en el lugar de la música, el baile y la fiesta.


Where? (¿Dónde?)The Malecon is a paved walkway along the seashore at the heart of Puerto Vallarta’s Downtown, it starts approximately at 31 de octubre St. and it ends on the bridge over the Cuale river.

As every good “party street” in the world, this one has many options on any given night. To start the night, enjoy recommends savoring a good mojito at La Bodeguita del Medio or a cold Mexican beer at Señor Frog’s, in both places the heat keeps going up as the night goes by and you will find people dancing Cuban music at La Bodeguita and good rock and pop music at Señor Frog’s.

Como toda “calle fiestera” del mundo, esta tiene muchas opciones para salir en una noche cualquiera. Para iniciar la noche, enjoy recomienda un delicioso mojito en La Bodeguita del Medio o una cerveza helada en el Señor Frog’s, en ambos lugares la fiesta va subiendo de temperatura según avanza la noche y, a altas horas, encontrará gente bailando por todo el lugar, música cubana en La Bodeguita o rock y pop internacional en el Señor Frog’s.

We recommend to try one by night, so you have a different experience every time. Mandala Sky at top of Mandala Bar is a terrace with a great view of the sea and excellent music. One of the most exclusive places in Puerto Vallarta.

For a drink to be considered tequila, it must has been made in Mexico and contain, at least, 51% of its sugars from the agave. However, the purest and best tequilas are 100% agave.

Short history of Tequila

Tequila symbolizes all that is Mexican, its origins can be traced back to those of the nation. Before the arrival of Europeans to Mexican soil, natives obtained from the agaves, a fermented beverage that was used for ceremonies and rituals: the pulque. But this was not tequila yet, because the very process of distillation needed to make tequila, was unknown on this land.

Midway through the 16th century, some thirsty Spaniards settled in the region of Tequila, where there is plenty of blue agave, started distilling the juice from the heart of that plant and that’s how tequila, the drink, was born. From an American raw material and a European technique a Mexican product was born, the result of the mixture of civilizations, just like the country itself.

Para que una bebida pueda considerarse tequila, debe haber sido elaborada en México y contener al menos un 51% de azúcares provenientes del agave, aunque los tequilas más puros y, por lo mismo, mejores, contienen 100% agave.

Breve historia del Tequila

El tequila simboliza tan perfectamente todo lo mexicano, que su origen se funde con el del país. Antes de la llegada de los europeos a tierras mexicanas, del agave se extraía una bebida aguardentosa que utilizaban en ceremonias y rituales: el pulque. Sin embargo, no se trataba del Tequila pues no se conocía el proceso de la destilación, indispensable para su producción.

A mediados del siglo XVI, españoles asentados en la región de Tequila, donde abundan los agaves azules, comenzaron a destilar el jugo extraído del corazón de esa planta y fue así como nació el tequila, la bebida. De una materia prima americana y una técnica europea se creó un producto mexicano, resultado de la mezcla de ambas civilizaciones, como el país mismo.

Types of Tequila (Tipos de Tequila) Blanco: (White) the one obtained just after distillation. It spends almost no time in the wood barrels and for this reason its flavor has no variations at all.

Blanco: el que se obtiene justo al salir de la destilación. Casi no pasa nada de tiempo en las barricas de madera por lo que su sabor no varía.

Joven u Oro: (Young or Gold) the result of the mixes of tequila blanco with tequila reposado and/or añejos.

Joven u Oro: resultado de las mezclas de tequila blanco con tequilas reposados y/o añejos.

Reposado: (Rested) it has to be resting in oak wood barrels for a period between two months and one year. It’s softer than the white one and it has a light golden natural color and its flavor has a little touch of wood.

Reposado: permanece por un mínimo de dos meses hasta menos de un año en barricas de encino o roble blanco. Más suave que el blanco, tiene un color natural que va desde un dorado tenue, hasta un ámbar claro.

Añejo: (Aged or Vintage) this one has to mature for at least one year in new or second use white oak barrels. It has a dark golden color.

Añejo: el que se madura un año, por lo menos, en barricas de roble blanco, nuevas o de segundo uso, de 600 lts de capacidad. Su color va de un dorado fuerte a un ámbar oscuro.

Just like champagne can only be made in the region of Champagne, France, true tequila can only be made in a determined area of the Mexican Republic. At the beginning, the production of tequila was limited to the area surrounding the villages of Tequila and Amatitán in the state of Jalisco, nowadays tequila can be produced in the whole state of Jalisco and a few counties of Nayarit, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato and Michoacán that have demonstrated their long standing tequila tradition.

Así como el champagne sólo se produce en la región de Champagne, Francia, el verdadero tequila sólo se produce en una zona determinada de la República Mexicana. En principio se limitaba en los alrededores de la región de Tequila y Amatitán en el estado de Jalisco, hoy la denominación de origen abarca todo Jalisco y algunos municipios de Nayarit, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato y Michoacán, que han demostrado históricamente su tradición tequilera.

From February 22nd to the 28th it was successfully held in Banderas Bay this celebration of the Wine Culture. There was a Film Cycle (Film & Wine), tastings, conferences, a contest of poetry to wine and a competition of Sommeliers. The Hosting Restaurants were Café des Artistes, Cava 5, Dolce Vita, La Petite, Le Kliff, Portobello, The River Café, Thierry’s Steak House, Trio, Vitea.

El 22 al 28 de febrero se celebró con gran éxito esta celebración de la Cultura del Vino. Hubo un ciclo de cine (El Cine y el Vino), catas, conferencias, un concurso de poesía al vino y una competencia de Sommeliers. Famous Mexican dip made from avocados. The name is derived from two Aztec Nahuatl words -ahuacatl (avocado) and molli (sauce).

INGREDIENTS:

2 ripe avocados

1/2 red onion, minced

1-2 serrano chiles, stems and seeds removed

2 tablespoons cilantro leaves, finely chopped

1 tablespoon of fresh lime or lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon coarse salt

A dash of freshly grated black pepper

1/2 ripe tomato, seeds and pulp removed, chopped

Cut avocados in half and remove the seed. Sccop out avocado from the peel and put it in a mixing bowl.

With a fork, mash the avocado, then add the chopped onion, cilantro, lime (if you want it real Mexican) or lemon (if you couldn’t find lime), salt and pepper and keep mashing a bit more.

Chili peppers vary in their hotness, so be cautious in the amount of chili you use for your guacamole. Try with a little bit and go from there, adding more according to your taste.

Keep the tomatoes separate until ready to serve.

Cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface of guacamole and refrigerate until ready. Mexican secret: keep the seed of the avocado in the mixing bowl, it will keep the guacamole fresh.

Just before serving, add the chopped tomato and mix. Serves 2-4

Temazcal is a kind of sweat lodge with origins in the indigenous people of Mesoamerica. The word “temazcal” comes from the Nahuatl word temazcalli (“house of heat”). It’s usually constructed from volcanic rock and cement, in a circular dome. Volcanic stones are heated and then placed in a pit inside the temazcal, heating up the whole place. It’s a ritual of purification, both of body and spirit.

El temazcal es un baño indígena con vapor de agua de hierbas aromáticas originario de Mesoamérica. Su nombre proviene del náhuatl y significa “casa de vapor”. Se realiza en construcciones naturales que representan el vientre de la Madre Tierra, en las cuales se introducen piedras porosas, previamente calentadas al rojo vivo, sobre las que se vierte una infusión de plantas medicinales. Es un ritual de purificación de cuerpo y espíritu.

Hello Taniel, thank you very much for your time. Please tell us how do you see the actual situation of the real estate business in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit?

Hello, thanks to Enjoy for the opportunity to reach your readers. Well, the market seems to have picked up. Our office hasn’t been this busy in some time. We’ve had an increase in inquiries, showings and sales. Buyers are feeling more secure with purchasing something that is completely built versus something that is about to break ground or in the early stages of construction. Another important aspect to have in consideration is “Lifestyle”, buyers want to be closer to where the action is… meaning, the beach, restaurants, social activities, shopping, festivals, galleries… and closer to the culture and community we’ve known to love. More and more buyers have been flying down here recently to specifically make a real estate purchase. Have you heard people say “I’m waiting for the right time?”… well, here it is!

Can a foreigner buy a property in Mexico? If so, how?

Absolutely! Vallarta is in the region called the Restricted Zone, which is 100km from the border and 50km from the coastline. In these areas, a foreigner purchasing a property establishes a trust (Fideicomiso) through a Mexican bank of his or her choosing. The title gets held in the trust. The bank acts as a trustee on behalf of the buyer. The buyer is the beneficiary of the trust and has the same rights as a Mexican national purchasing in the restricted zone. The beneficiary can lease the property; transfer the rights to the property to another person/family or third party. The trust has a maximum term of 50 years and can be automatically renewed for another 50-year period. These trusts are not held by the trustee (bank) as an asset of the bank.


Is this a good time to buy a property in the area?There are better opportunities now than the last 5 years and some well informed buyers are seeing, hearing and reading about these opportunities and they’re coming to Puerto Vallarta to shop. There’s been a rare domino effect of good fortune for a prospective buyer. 1) Developments that broke ground when the market was sizzling hot a few years ago, got completed when the market became very soft. These developers, in order to liquidate their large inventories are offering some incentives never seen before in PV. 2) The US media over-hyped coverage of the “drug wars” and H1N1 frightened some investors away, making sellers more nervous during the economic downturn. And 3) since the Closing Costs are in Mexican Pesos and both the US and Canadian currencies have gained some where between 20-30% against the peso in the last year or so, has given the foreign investor an extra dosage of savings at closing.

Art Walk Camino del Arte

The Old Town Art Walk is a great idea conceived by a group of 16 art galleries that decided to get together and organize a series of open exhibitions, cocktail included, from 6 to 10 pm, giving a new meaning to Wednesdays in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Any other evening you can book a table for a fancy restaurant or try one of the many activities available for tourists, but now you know that on Wednesday evening there is a free walk around downtown, where you can do something different, talk with artists and may be buy some fine art.

El Camino del Arte del Viejo Vallarta es una gran idea de un grupo de 16 galerías de arte que decidieron unirse y organizar una serie de exposiciones abiertas al público, con bebidas incluidas, de 6 a 10 de la noche, dando a los miércoles en el Centro de Puerto Vallarta un nuevo significado. Cualquier otra noche, usted puede reservar una mesa para cenar en un restaurant elegante o probar alguna de las muchas actividades que se ofrecen para los turistas, pero ahora sabe que las noches de miércoles existe un paseo gratis por las callecitas del Centro, donde puede hacer algo diferente, charlar con artistas y quizá comprar alguna obra de arte.

While I was walking from one gallery to another, I had the chance to talk with Barbara Dunn, an artist from Michigan who works with photograps and acrylics, exhibiting her work at Galería Vallarta. In this same gallery, Guillermo Robles, an artist from Mexico City was showing his work based on an angels theme and a couple of interesting works about María Sabina, the priestess of the magic mushrooms of Oaxaca.

Mientras caminaba de una galería a otra, tuve la oportunidad de platicar con Barbara Dunn, una artista de Michigan que trabaja con fotografías y acrílicos, que exhibía su trabajo en la Galería Vallarta. En la misma galería, me encontré con Guillermo Robles, un artista de la Ciudad de México que mostraba su arte con temática de ángeles y un par de trabajos muy interesantes sobre María Sabina, la sacerdotisa de los hongos de Oaxaca.

It was a nice evening walk with good talk, interesting people and beautiful works of artists from all over the world, but specially Mexicans and their particular view of life, death and the human condition.

Fue una velada agradable con buena conversación y gente interesante, que me dio la oportunidad de apreciar bellas obras de arte de artistas de todo el mundo, pero especialmente de artistas mexicanos y su particular manera de entender la vida, la muerte y la condición humana.

COMMUNICATION

Almost every service provider will speak English so don’t worry too much if you have forgotten your Spanish lessons from high school. Anyway, there are a few important words to know:

“Ahorita” that you could translate as “right now” will never mean that.

“Mañana” does not necessarily mean “tomorrow” (time in Mexico is different).

In Mexico it’s normal to shake hands with people, even if you saw them before in the same day.

A kiss on the cheek is customary for girls. If you haven’t seen your partner for a week, or so, don’t be surprised if you get an “abrazo” (embrace).

SOME USEFUL PHRASES

“No tengo dinero” – “I’ve got no money” (they will never believe you, but you can try)

“Una cerveza por favor” – “One beer please” (“dos” for “two”, “tres” for “three”…)

“¿Cuánto cuesta?” – “How much?” (remember to ask before getting the service or product, especially when dealing with cab drivers)

“Buenos días señorita” – “Good morning miss” (say this to every lady you meet and you will always get a nice smile back. Don’t worry about age or marital status)

“Buenas noches señor” – “Good night sir” (try exchanging “señor” and “señorita” according to sex for better results)
