Exercise 3: Subject LinesRemember the following guidelines:

Make your subject line brief but informative. Be concrete and specific. Put the subject line after the salutation. Use title case (Capitalize letters as you would for a book title.) Underline the subject line or not, as you choose.

Below are mock-ups of letters. Write subject lines for each of them:

Letter 1 informs the recipient that in a recently received shipment of shelving material and hardware, three packages of hardware were missing. It also asks that the missing items be shipped.

Subject:

In letter 2, you are the Secretary of Planning for a large social club. Twenty-five members of your organization are interested in a trip. Your letter to a travel agent requests detailed information about group tours to Java, Indonesia. You want rates, discounts, dates, accommodation information, travel availability.

In letter 3 (email):, you’ve been flown out to an exploration and drilling ship working off the coast of Northern BC where you are to identify and repair an engine problem. You’ve discovered that a valve in one of the cylinders is broken. The problem had seemed to be only inconvenient and irritating, but you’ve discovered that the broken valve actually threatens the integrity of the cylinder and, if a storm were to shake the broken part loose, the result could be a ruined cylinder. The effect might be to destroy the engine’s turbocharger. Your email focuses on the parts needed, requesting that they be flown to the ship within the next twenty-four hours.
