The Choking Dog"Come on, come on, move it!"Joanne beat impatiently on the steering wheel of her Mercedes sports car. How stupid to get caught upin the rush hour! She had planned to leave work early this afternoon, at three o'clock, to give herself achance to relax and have a bath before going out to a meeting of her local tennis club. But just at ten tothree a client had arrived, and it was two hours before she had finished dealing with the man. When shecame out of her office, all the other staff in the Highlight Advertising Agency had already left. Now shewas stuck in a traffic jam in central Birmingham at 5:30, and at 6:30 she was expected to be chairing ameeting of the tennis club. There would be no time for any hot bath.Ahead of her, the traffic was moving at last, and she swung quickly out into the centre lane to turnright, and raced the last half-mile through the quiet suburban streets to her house. Pulling up on thedriveway, she leapt out of the car and ran for the house. As she opened the door, she nearly tripped overSheba, who was standing behind it."Hey, Sheba, hello," she said, bending down to stroke the large Alsatian dog's head, "I've got no timefor you now, but I'll take you out as soon as I get back from the tennis club."It was then that she noticed something worrying about the dog. Sheba seemed to be coughing orchoking, her stomach pumping repeatedly as if she was trying to vomit something up. She was obviouslyin real discomfort and could hardly breathe; her sad eyes gazed up at Joanne helplessly."Oh damn, this is all I need now," said Joanne to herself, dropping her briefcase and bending down totake a closer look, "a sick dog, today of all days!" On closer examination, Sheba did look very sick, andJoanne realized she would have to take her down to the vet immediately. Luckily, the vet's surgery wasonly a few streets away, and Joanne quickly loaded the dog, still coughing and choking, into her car forthe short drive. When she got there, the surgery was just about to close for the day. Luckily, Dr. Sterne had not leftyet, and when he saw the state of Sheba, he brought her quickly into his office."It looks like something is stuck in her throat," said Dr. Sterne. It shouldn't take me too long to get itout." "Listen, doctor, I'm really in a rush to get to a meeting -- can I leave her with you, and go and getchanged? I'll be back in ten minutes to pick her up, then I'll take her on to the meeting with me. Is thatOK?" "Sure," said the doctor. "You get going. I'll see you in ten minutes."Joanne jumped back into her car again, and made the quick trip round to her house in a couple ofminutes. As she was once more entering the hallway, the phone on the table by the door began to ring. She picked it up, annoyed by this additional interruption to her plans."This is Dr. Sterne," said an anxious voice. "Is that you, Joanne?"

Page 11: ENGLISH for you and me

"Of course it's me," said Joanne, surprised at the sound of his voice, "no-one else lives here.""I want you to get right out of that house immediately," said the doctor's voice. "Right now. I'mcoming round right away, and the police will be there any time now. Wait outside for us." The phonewent dead. Joanne stared at it. She was confused, but she was also a little frightened by the obvious fearin the voice of the doctor. She replaced the receiver, then quickly backed out of the door and ran into thestreet. At that moment, a police car with its lights flashing swung round the corner and screeched to a stopoutside the house. Two policemen got out. After briefly checking that she was the owner of the house, they ran into the house through the still open door, without explaining anything. Joanne was by nowcompletely confused and very frightened. Then the doctor arrived."Where's Sheba? Is she OK?" shouted Joanne, running over to his car."She's fine, Joanne. I extracted the thing which was choking her, and she's OK now.""Well what's this all about? Why are the police in my house?"Just then, the two policemen reappeared from the house, half-carrying a white-faced figure, a man in adark grey sweater and jeans, who, it seemed, could hardly walk. There was blood all over him."My God," said Joanne, "how did he get in there? And how did you know he was there?""I think he must be a burglar," said the doctor. "I knew he was there because when I finally removedwhat was stuck in Sheba's throat, it turned out to be three human fingers. I don't think he's a very happyburglar."THE TENTH CANTONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPETITION –Primary Schools 2011Sarajevo Canton, Ministry of Education and Science – Pedagogical Institute

Page 13: ENGLISH for you and me

Teenager Christiana Tugwell and a small band of fellow school-age environmentalists have spent thepast five months fighting proposals being put forward by the property developer, CountrysideResidentials, to build 66 luxury detached houses in an area of woodland. They have received support attheir protest camp from other residents who want to save the wood and the wildlife it contains. Theyhave built a network of underground tunnels, which they will occupy to prevent the developers fromstarting work. Countryside Residential said it had been careful to preserve wildlife on the site, employing ecologists to do surveys and spending tens of thousands of pounds protecting animal andplant life.‘I began organizing the local campaign when I realized just how many local residents were against thedevelopments. They were writing letters of protest to the council but this was simply not enough. Soin order to put more pressure on the council and to raise national awareness, I started camping on theproposed development site. I was the ring-leader and had to bully some friends to join me. Theyweren’t keen on sleeping rough and neither was I, but something had to be done.My mum’s initial reaction was “are you sure you want to do this?” After the first week she sent somefriends to try to make me come home. They said I’d get into trouble, but I was determined to stay. Ieven spent three nights at the camp on my own. Even though she wanted me home, mum was alwayssupportive and even brought us vegetarian sausages.‘Mum and I don’t always see eye to eye on everything. But we agree that as long as what I want to dois not completely stupid, she lets me do it. I’m very stubborn and if I think I can do it, normally I can.‘She worries about possible violence from the people trying to evict us and so do I, but there won’t beany violence on our part. SHAPE OF FINS TO COMEThere’s something fishy going on in fashion. You could soon be stepping out decked in salmon andcod, reports Max Glaskin.Snakeskin might be all the rage in designer collections this spring, but it could be replaced bysomething even more scaly. Several Scandinavian designers have just announced a new luxury fabric torival the finest leathers, silks and furs. No longer will snakeskin, lizard and crocodile be the preferredhides of exotic materials, because there’s a new kid on the block: fish skin. The first fish leather tannery in Sweden is now up and running, offering its unique products to theworld’s top fashion houses in the hope that they will scale the heights of chic in the new millennium.Turning old fish into desirable dress material is not easy. It takes three days, starting with a wash toremove most of the fat and dirt. The scales are lifted and then the skin is pickled. ‘The way we get ridof the offensive smell is a secret,’ says Bergholz, joint owner of Sea Skin Scandinavia.Yvonne Eriksson, of the Finnish design company Fero, meanwhile, has been making shirts and jacketsfrom fish leather, mostly from turbot and Nile perch caught in Lake Victoria. ‘It’s a great alternative tomore traditional exotic skins,’ she says. ‘Fish leather gives a more elegant impression than traditionalleather and it’s at least as strong.’

Reality TV - media hype or genuine hit?Tony Christian, member of the media watchdog group ‘Airwave’ and Jenny Doyle, winner of last year’s Big Brother are discussing reality shows.Jenny: It’s been a lot of fun since I left the house. Lots of interviews on radio and TV andpeople recognise me wherever I go. It hasn’t completely changed my life, though. No offers topresent TV programmes, but then that’s not why I went on in the first place. I’d seen earlierseries and thought, ‘She’s in it for the money,’ or ‘He wants to be a star,’ and I thought theprogramme could be so much more than that. I thought it could show what the young people ofBritain are really like right now so I went on just to be myself, really.Tony: But in real life we don’t decide who we want to get rid of and then vote on it. It’s thatanti-social aspect that worries me and other members of Airwave and similar organisations.Jenny: Well, having to nominate your housemates isn’t easy because you become very

Page 18: ENGLISH for you and me

emotionally attached to the other people. But we all knew that at the end of the day it was agame. And I disagree with you, it’s not supposed to be real life, but rather a TV programme, and I’m sure everyone watching is aware of that.Tony: Maybe when you’re talking about adult viewers. But what concerns me is very youngviewers. There have been reports of children as young as seven or eight years old playing BigBrother in the playground and using the game to bully other children, by nominating them andthen voting them out. That can be a very hurtful experience at that age.Jenny: Well, that’s not something I would defend. But, doesn’t it also teach them a lot aboutmaking friends, about showing tolerance and giving other people their own space?Tony: What we propose is tighter controls over times of broadcast rather than a complete ban. That means broadcast when we can reasonably expect very young viewers to be in bed.Circle the most appropriate option:

However, everyday observations are not always made carefully or systematically. Most people do not attempt tocontrol or eliminate factors that might influence the events they are observing. As a consequence, incorrect conclusions are often drawn.Consider, for example, the classic case of Clever Hans. Hans was a horse that was said by hisowner, a German mathematics teacher, to have amazing talents. Hans could count, do simpleaddition and subtraction (even involving fractions), read German, answer simple questions (“What isthe lady holding in her hands?“), give the date, and tell the time. Hans answered questions by tappingwith his forefoot or by pointing with his nose at different alternatives shown to him. His ownerconsidered Hans to be truly intelligent and denied using any tricks to guide his horse’s behaviour. And, in fact, Clever Hans was clever even when the questioner was someone other than his owner. In 1904, a scientific commission was established with the goal of discovering the basis for Hans’sabilities. The scientists found that Hans was no longer clever if either of two circumstances existed.First, Hans did not know the answers if the questioner also did not know the answers. Second, Hanswas not very clever if he could not see his questioner. A slight bending forward by the questionerwould start Hans tapping, and any movement upward or backward would cause Hans to stop tapping.ГРАДСКО / ОКРУЖНО ТАКМИЧЕЊЕ ШИФРА / CODE: __________________ЕНГЛЕСКИ ЈЕЗИК - VIII РАЗРЕД TIME: 15 min.26. март 2011. године МАX. 7 points / MIN. 5ЕНГЛЕСКИ ОД 5. LISTENING COMPREHENSION TESTHollywood RanchHollywood, the most famous town in America, got its name in 1886 when a retired couplemoved to California and built a ranch. The movies hadn't yet been born and the couple chosethe location because they liked the wide open spaces around the small but bustling city of LosAngeles.Three years later moving pictures were invented in London when William Friese-Greene gavethe first demonstration of a Kinematograph. But it was the Lumiere brothers in Paris who gavethe first public demonstration before a paying audience in 1895. Ironically, they thought movieshad no commercial use.

Page 23: ENGLISH for you and me

The first narrative film that used actors was called "The Great Train Robbery". People went tosee the film in their thousands. Each person paid five cents for admission: this is why the firstcinemas were called "Nickel Odeons."The popularity of movie boomed and the film companies joined together in order to get patentrights as a way of protecting their product. But pirate companies began to make films of theirown outside the law. To avoid prosecution these film makers packed up and moved acrosscountry. They settled in a small town called Hollywood.By 1914 this town had become the biggest film factory in the world. Other companies movedthere because the sunny climate was conducive to shooting outdoors. The surroundingenvironment was also perfect for making westerns, the first and most popular American filmgenre. The early Hollywood artists were regarded with disrespect by many people. This is what happenedwhen a robot lost its head.A robot that was supposed to serve wine in a restaurant ran amok instead, knockingover furniture and frightening customers, until eventually its head fell off into acustomer's lap, the court of Sessions in Edinburgh was told yesterday. The court was told that during its eventful career in a restaurant in Leith, Edinburgh, the robot spilled a glass of wine on its first test run and became uncontrollable afterthirty minutes, knocking over furniture. It was said to have been erratic and uncontrollable again during tests the next day, when it spilled more glasses of wine and ended dropping its head into a customer's lap, while its lights and voice cassette also failed. The engineer who demonstrated the robot at the restaurant and showed a disc jockeyhow to use it, told the court:"It just needed practice, and in time you can perfect it. It is almost like a conjuring trip. You speak into the microphone."But he said that if the batteries were undercharged "the results would be catastrophic, because the radio-controlled signal would be too weak and there would be jerkymovements."The robot stood in court wearing a black hat and bow tie.
