QFL: What is AM and PM in relation to time?
The 24 Hour Day
A day has 24 hours. A clock has 12 hours.
This means each time will happen twice every day.
The hour hand goes
around the clock
twice . The first time it
goes round in the day
it is AM and the
second time it goes
around it is PM.
This means each time will
happen twice every day
We have to use a way to write these times differently. One way is to use a.m. and p.m.
First time round the clock in the
day!
Second time round the clock in
the day!
The day is made up of
AM and PM.
There are many names

Different times of the
day.

Midday/noon
Afternoon
Evening
Night/Midnight
Learn
The 24 Hour clock
Another way is to use a 24 hour clock.
This means the hours after 12 noon are converted to 13:00 to 23:00.
During AM (Morning) the hour hand has only gone past midnight 2 hours and 30 minutes.
This is why the first clock shows 2:30am. (The first time round the clock)
However, the second clock although it looks the same, is in the afternoon so it pm. (The second time
round the clock)
This means the hour hand has gone around the clock 14 hours and 30 minutes.
It has been around once (12 hours) plus 2 hours and 30 minutes more.
A 4 digit format is used. 2 digits for the hour, a colon (:) and 2 digits for the minutes
24 Hour Hours
This clock and table show the corresponding hours on a 24 hour clock.
Midnight is referred to as 00:00

RE Qfl: What is a naming ceremony?
How are babies named?
In Christianity, Christians have a Baptism ceremony. We learnt about this in RE, the baby goes to the church with his or
her family. The priest has a special service, like saying special prays, they have a baptism bowl, called a font and the baby
is baptized with holy water. Friends and other family members attend. Normally, a party happens afterwards to celebrate
the birth of the baby.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zm87tfr
All religions have some kind of naming ceremony.
What happened when you were born? Ask an adult in your house.
Explain what happened and maybe even draw a picture of you and your family.
In Islam: When a baby is born the Azan (the call to pray) is said in the baby’s ear first in right then left. Sometimes honey
is given, parties and celebrations afterwards. What exact celebrations happen can be different but the call to pray (Azan)
always happens.
In Hinduism some parents hold a ceremony on the 6th day called a ‘Chatti’ to name the baby. Traditionally the mother of
the newborn lights a lamp (diya). This lamp along with a red pen and paper are placed on a wooden plank for God to
write the future of the newborn and bless the baby. Different religions have different ceremonies ask you parents what happened when you were born? Why?
