3 The Date

Page 2 can be used as a reference page for students who need to review or refer to the names of the months. Play the recording and have students follow along. Give students time to write in the missing uppercase and lowercase letters on pages 3 and 4. Then introduce your students to abbreviations on page 5. Explain that abbreviations are often used when writing (not saying) the date. Give students time to practice writing them on page 6. On page 7, have students work with a real calendar in pairs or small groups.

This page can be used for review or assessment after going through all of the parts of the lesson. You can also use the additional assessment suggestions on page 16. You can decide whether you want to do Part A orally (listen and respond) or whether you want your students to read and respond in writing.

Explain that a complete date includes the year. Show students the different ways that years are written and said. Explain that we separate the years in two digits when we say them. You can decide if you want to teach the three ways to say a year (twenty eighteen, two thousand and eighteen, two thousand eighteen).

Explain that the written date uses regular numbers (cardinal numbers). Then tell your students that we say the calendar dates with ordinal numbers. Have students listen and repeat the ordinal numbers while looking at the calendar dates on page 9. Then go over how to write the full date on page 10 and practice it.

Note:

We recommend bringing in some real calendars for this lesson. You should use this lesson after introducing your students to the numbers 1–30 and uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet. You can use the Numbers and Letters flashcards from the Flashcard library.

Learner Reflection

Have students fill out the self-assessment form on page 12.

Assessment Tools

The assessment criteria relate to this lesson as a whole. You can choose how to assess your students. Use any of the following suggestions or come up with your own ideas.

Reading/Speaking Assessment

Here are a few ideas for reading and speaking assessments that you could do with this learning target.

Point to the Date

Say a date on the calendar and have your students point to it.

Match the Short Form and Long Form

Put the short and long forms of the months on the board and have students match them up.

Say the Ordinal Number

Point to a number on a calendar and have them say the ordinal number.

Say the Year

Write some years on the board and have students say them out loud.

Writing Assessment

Here are a few ideas for writing assessments for this learning target:

Write Birthdates

Ask students to survey their classmates and record their birthdates. You can use the following resource:

https://esllibrary.com/resources/2317

Write the Short Forms

Have students write the short forms of months beside the long forms (or vice versa).

Q & A

Have students respond to questions in writing. For example:

• What is today's date?• What is your birthdate?• What date did you arrive in the US?

I have . Who has ?

Use the Month Cards from pages 17–18 and play I have ... Who has...? Can they read the month cards? Can they play in the correct order? (I have January. Who has February?)
