What can your son do to improve in English?

• Examinations test a very wide range of skills across the two GCSEs – writing creatively, writing persuasively, inference, deduction, analysing, evaluating, synthesising

• Fortnightly assessments will be key to helping your son understand what his areas for focus are – they should also be in conversation with their class teacher – help them identify their area for focus.

• Complete a self audit before starting revision – don’t focus on the aspects that you find easy!!

What can your son do to improve in English?

Language is an unseen exam – learn the questions and their requirements! They do not change.Cannot learn the ‘right’ answers so it has to be about practicing and developing skills.Read WIDELY –

daily read a high-quality newspaper article or news report and summarise the key ideas into 3 bullet points – can be done online very simply.Try to read some fiction and non fiction – travel writing, biography, autobiography alongside novels. Effective as part of routine – digital sundown!

Broaden vocabulary – need a range of synonyms at fingertips to help reading analysis and their own writingPractice structuring an argumentPractice using wide range of sentence types

What can your son do to improve in English?

More straightforward for traditional revision – learn quotes! Starting early will help enormously.

Flashcards for quotes – allocate some to different rooms in the house – build associations. Rotate them monthly.Engage with them, ask them questions about the quotes.

Revision guides will be available for purchase after Christmas. CGP ones are reasonably priced and very helpful.Plan sample answers – through mindmaps
