However, I do have an apprecia-tion for the way others celebrate.Enjoying and sharing in the celebrations of others do not takeaway one bit from my own. I always look forward to seeingthe houses lit up along CandyCane Lane and seeing the brightlights glow in the darkness. Froma purely aesthetic viewpoint,Christmas decorations are beautiful and can sometimes be artistic.

In recent years I have come toappreciate the display of crèchesat the West End ChristianReformed Church. Seeing thehundreds of Nativity scenes fromaround the world, created in different styles with different

materials, is absolutely fascinating.

I can certainly live without theretail pressure to buy things or theblaring aural assault of Christmasmusic every time I enter a store.I’m no Grinch – I like someChristmas songs, but after thefirst dozen or so times I start togrow tired even of my favourites.Instead, I commiserate with like-minded folks – and there aremany. The holidays aren’t aboutspending too much, overeating, and various other indulgences. Itis about family, fun, and contem-plating the spiritual side of life.

Regardless of what holiday youcelebrate, we here at The SPURRwish you and yours the very best!

Holidays and Meaning

First of all, before I write a columnabout the holidays I have to makean admission: I don’t celebrateChristmas. Never have. Notbecause of any aversion to thecommercialization of the seasonor the rampant materialism it promotes. My reasons are far lessexciting and more personal: I’mJewish. I celebrate Chanukahinstead.

This issue has the possibility ofbeing The Jasper PlaceRevitalization Strategy’sPandora’s Box. City Councillorshave already approved an ActionPlan that community membershave worked diligently on. Thisdocument did look not at theissue of including the LRT in rede-velopment.

Recently, I attended a volunteersupper where the speaker talkedabout the value of communitiesand the gifts within them.

Gifts are about giving, and the vol-unteers of the Jasper PlaceRevitalization have given many. They have given their time, theircommitment, and their diversetalents to creating a vision for bet-ter community life in the JasperPlace/Stony Plain Road and sur-rounding areas of Canora,Glenwood, BritanniaYoungstown, and West JasperPlace.

Ideas have flowed in the variouscommittees, public meetings,

the future have been developed.

So how will the City use thesegifts? We often hear that City res-idents are indifferent to urbanissues. This Revitalization areaand its volunteers have provenotherwise. When the meetingsbegan about three years ago, allCity departments had notreceived permission to attend andwork with the communities.Volunteers at that time decided tomove forward and be pro-active.It is time for the City and itsdepartments to “catch up” andwork co-operatively in a co-ordi-nated way that will make theJasper Place Revitalization area aleader of innovative urban plan-ning in Edmonton and acrossCanada.

Whether the LRT is a “gift” thecommunities want or not, it maybe a reality. If you have anythoughts, concerns, or other com-ments about the LRT issue, con-tact the editor of The SPURR. TheLRT would be a major change forthe Revitalization area and yourinput is important.

and workshops. People haveshared their insights with regardto how they want to their neigh-bourhoods to change and grow. Itis pro-active and positive for arearesidents and the City.

Foresight and careful planninghave provided a strategic plan thatwill serve this Revitalization area in

the immediate future as well asthe future generations of our com-munities.

Teamwork within committees hasgiven us the knowledge of whatliving in this area was like in thepast. It has shared with us theknowledge of the issues we facetoday. Important action plans for

In these times of eco-friendlyeverything, one way to help theearth just a little bit more atChristmas time is to make yourdoor wreath from fresh boughs, rather than buying a plastic onethat will take eons to decom-pose in a landfill. Most floristshops carry boughs and freshholly sprigs to make yourwreath with. A quick sprits withwater every day or two will keepthem fresh and green through-out the holiday season. Somenatural elements that can beadded to your wreath may beraffia ribbon, cinnamon sticks, real oranges (navel work bestand last the longest), kumquats, pomegranates, nuts in the shell,

pinecones, and other suchthings. A natural wreath shouldlast three to four weeks with alittle TLC, and smells heavenlywhen entering your home. Bythe time the holidays are over, you can feel a little bit betterabout disposing of your wreath, and you won’t have to find aspace to store it until next year.

The same idea can be used forgarlands and table center piecesin your home. Buy fresh boughsand wire them together to makereal garlands rather than buying

fake. Just take care around can-dles. The new flameless can-dles that run on batteries wouldbe a good choice in thisinstance. I use them in my bath-room when having a nice, relax-ing bubble bath and they look

great. They come in manysizes, and would

work well withreal greenery.

They are petand kid friendly, also. As a side note, I just received

my T&T Seeds catalogue thisweek. You can order online, orrequest a catalogue, atwww.ttseeds.com or phone 1-204-895-9964. Now that my cat-alogue is here, I know spring ison its way (albeit a few monthsyet). Gardeners are forever opti-mistic.

Until next year, happy garden-ing.

JPRS GOES ONLINE CANORA PARK WATCH

One of the main challenges ofany community developmentproject is effective communica-tion. It is important that peopleknow what is happening and havean opportunity to have their voic-es heard. To date, The SPURRhas been the primary source ofinformation regarding the JasperPlace Revitalization Strategy.

The reality, of course, is that notall people access information inthe same way. Facebook, Twitter, blogs and other sources of socialmedia are becoming increasinglypopular. In fact, there are current-ly more than 300 million activeusers on Facebook! And it’s notjust young people using socialmedia – the fastest growingdemographic on Facebook is peo-ple over the age of 35.

With that in mind, there are nowtwo more places that you can findinformation regarding the JasperPlace Revitalization Strategy –Facebook and Twitter. To find uson Facebook, just search for“Jasper Place RevitalizationStrategy” and the group shouldbe the first search result. You can

After taking off a few months fora little repair to my heart, and todo some canning with all mytomatoes, I am back. I read in amagazine that if you put a Tumstablet in with each tomato plantthat it is good for the plant. Well,I put two Tums in each hole as Iplanted them, and you shouldhave seen what happened. Mydaughter, Michele, will remindyou all about this in the spring inthe gardening column. I ended upwith over 40 quarts of salsa, 10quarts of tomato onion relish, 7quarts of tomato sauce, 12 smalljars of pizza sauce, and 15 quartsof plain canned tomatoes. Plus, Igave away bushels and bushels. It sure works.

I don’t know about you, but I amstarting to get ready forChristmas. At least in this dayand age we are lucky enough tohave freezers to keep things in sowe can start early and just pop itall into the freezer. My Mom did-n’t have such a luxury, so she hadto do most of the baking just thelast few days before Christmas, and what a flurry that caused inour kitchen. Of course herChristmas cakes were made inearly October, wrapped incheesecloth and moistened regu-larly with brandy, sherry, or rum. Then she had to do the mincetarts, butter tarts, gingerbread, and shortbread just beforeChristmas. Our old coal andwood stove was just puffingaway.

We would be busy making ourcranberry and popcorn tree gar-lands then too because we didn’twant the cranberries to dry up

too soon. They were always putout for the birds to gorge on afterNew Years. We also had the busi-ness of getting the tree and put-ting that up – a real tree, not animitation one – and it sure didsmell good. As soon as my dadwould bring the tree in the house, you knew Christmas was coming.

Now we can all start our bakingearly and have it ready, and just godown to the basement to get theimitation tree and the decorationsfrom the years before. Kind oftakes all the fun out of it, I think.

I do a lot of baking beforeChristmas because I make cookieand treat boxes for friendsand family, and I am surethey all appreciate gettingtheir box of goodies. I haveone neighbour (not mention-ing names) who even tellsme what to put in it. Mygranddaughter, Mimi, is com-ing over to help me soon withsome of the cookies. I thinkthat she thinks I am getting tooold to be trusted with makingall the cookies. That’s OKbecause we have a good time. This year we are going to makechocolate Santa Claus andChristmas tree suckers to put inthe boxes, too.

I am going to give you a recipefor the most delicious savourycheese cookies to be servedwith a glass of wine, or evencoffee. These are really goodand I hope you enjoy them. They are a good snack to putout when friends comeover, rather than chips orsalty snacks.

The second recipe is a favourite ofeveryone in our family. It is quite

simple to make, but can bemessy.

I hope you all try these recipes, and enjoy them as much as ourfamily does.

Before I leave, I want to thank thewonderful lady named Sue whobrought our little dog, Oliver, backhome when he got out of the yarda couple of weeks ago. (Someoneleft the gate open – not me.)Oliver has an ID tag on his har-ness with our phone and address, and while we were out looking forhim after leaving the house quick-ly and leaving the doors

unlocked, she put him in ourkitchen. He was found over amile away on Ravine Drive, thatlittle stinker, which means he hadto have crossed Stony PlainRoad. These are the kind of peo-ple we have living in this area, and thank heavens for that. So,thank you very much, Sue, andmy husband thanks you alsobecause now he out of the dog-house.

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone,from the Heberts.

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (I use old)

1/2 cup softened butter

1/8 tsp Worchestershire sauce

3/4 cup flour

2 cups Rice Krispies

Mix the cheese, butter, Worchestershire sauce well. Stir in the flour

Wrap in wax paper and chill in fridge for 30 minutes. Cut into 1/2 inch

slices and place on lightly oiled baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees F

until lightly browned. I would suggest doubling this recipe.

The most expensive holiday ofthe year — Christmas — isquickly approaching.

The food, gifts, decorations, cards and all of those extras thatpop up can sure take a toll onyour wallet. I have some tips tohelp you enjoy the seasonSanta-style on a Humbug budg-et.

Host a cookie swap. Holiday baking can be time consuming and costly if you aremaking different desserts forthe season. It calls for a lot ofgrocery shopping and you usual-ly end up only using half or aquarter of what you had to pur-chase for your recipe. With a cookie swap, you get a

group of friends together andeach pick one dessert recipe, either a cookie or squares. Thenyou make a dozen of your recipefor each person in the swap andmake a dozen for you to keep.

For example, say you get togeth-er with six friends and decide tomake mint chocolate chip cook-ies. You would make seven-dozen cookies. You then set atime to meet and drop off the sixdozen and pick up six dozenother desserts that everyoneelse made. In the end, you areleft with seven dozen differentdesserts.

You end up saving moneybecause you are not buying a lotof different ingredients and youcan purchase what you need foryour recipe in bulk.

Recycle last year's cards. Keep your Christmas cards fromthe previous year and store themaway with your holiday decora-tions. The next year, take themout and recycle them.

First, this will give you a list ofwho sent you cards the previousyear to return the favour.Second, you can use the imageson the front of previous yearscards and make them into gifttags. This saves both the envi-ronment and your chequebook.

Buy on sale.Keep an eye out during the yearfor possible Christmas gifts to goon sale. In order to save moneywhile buying on sale you have toconsider the item at full value. For example, if you have a limitof $50 to spend per person, andyou find an item regularly pricedat $50 on sale for $30, then con-sider yourself done for that per-son.

Entertain on a budget.Spending time with family andfriends over the holidays doesn'thave to be costly either. Host apotluck party and ask each guestto bring a favorite appetizer. Findout ahead of time what they arebringing to avoid duplicates. Thisway, you make one appetizer

and your guests bring the rest. This is also a great icebreakertoo if all of your guests don'tknow each other.

Stock up after the holidays. Wait until after Christmas to buyyour decorations. Your choiceswill be limited, but you will beable to find some great deals onwhat's left.

You can also buy next year'scards and gift wrap at this time ifyou are running low at the end ofthe season. This way you will beall stocked up and ready to gonext year at a fraction of thecost.

I hope you have found someuseful tips in here to help yousave money during the holidays.
