The Greater Peninsula is one of six Virginia sites,
selected by the Department of Education in 2008, to
implement the new “Governor’s Academy for Career
and Technology Education.” This initiative is to prepare
innovators and technologists for Virginia’s workforce,
especially in the area of Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The Governor’s STEM Academy is designed to
provide an academy focused on advanced academic
and technical skills in each of the six Greater Peninsula
school divisions. Its focus is in Engineering Technology
and Information Technology. The Greater Peninsula
Governor’s STEM Academy involves partners from
education, business, postsecondary education, and
non-profi t organizations.

STEM Academy Completer Requirements2.5 GPA, 4 years of science, math beyond Algebra II, 4 years of English, 2 years of foreign
language, and earn an industry credential or at least 9 transferable college credits.
ACADEMY OVERVIEWThe Greater Peninsula Governor’s STEM Academy offers courses of study in two career pathways; Engineering Technology and Information Technology. These are high growth and high compensation occupations within Hampton Roads and for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The academy provides three levels of enrichment activities; Exploratory Saturdays (7th and 8th grade), Academic Preparation (9th and 10th grade); and Advanced Academics and Technical Training (11th and 12th grade). Academy courses may be offered at divisional high schools and/or at New Horizons Regional Education Centers (NHREC).
ACADEMY ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIESEXPLORATORY SATURDAYS7TH AND 10TH GRADEA regional series of Saturday events designed to engage and inspire students to pursue careers in Engineering Technology, Information Technology, or other STEM fi elds. Events include STEM themed hands-on activities (modeling and simulation, robotics, electronics, etc.), interactive problem solving activities, guest speakers from local business and education, and informational sessions for students and parents.
ACADEMIC PREPARATION9TH AND 10TH GRADE Students will explore various academic and technical courses available within their division’s academy program. Courses engage students in project-based learning activities resulting in a deeper understanding of course objectives and key concepts.
ADVANCED ACADEMICSAND TECHNICAL TRAINING11TH AND 12TH GRADEStudents continue taking courses required to earn the Governor’s Career and Technical Academy seal. Advanced academic and technical coursework prepares students to take an industry recognized credentialing exam. Courses may also be taken for dual enrollment credit where available.
ACADEMY BENEFITS• Academy grads will be awarded a Governor’s STEM Academy Diploma Seal and a
Career and Technical Education Diploma Seal.
• Academy graduates are eligible to apply for guaranteed admission into the Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) A.A.S. in Engineering Technology program or A.A.S. in Information Technology Systems program
• Academy graduates may receive priority consideration for acceptance into ODU’s Engineering Technology or Business Information Technology degree program
• Academy graduates may receive guaranteed admission into ECPI’s Electronics Engineering Technology or Computer Information Science A.S. or B.S. degree program based on admission requirements
• Program partners such as NASA Langley, Newport News Shipbuilding, and Canon Virginia strongly support the Greater Peninsula Governor’s STEM Academy and recognize Academy Completers.
