Innovative Approach

TCE innovative approach in executing projects has yielded many benefits, including improvement of environmental

and health conditions (especially reduction in pollution levels), significant technological and economical benefits to

clients as well as the society. Some of the prestigious assignments where the innovative approach of TCE has come

for critical acclaim includes :

Bombay Sewage Disposal Project used state-of-the-art technology in many fields of engineering such as the

use of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag in concrete, fully shielded Tunnel Boring Machine for constructing

tunnel at a relatively shallow depth of 18 m below ground level, trapezoidal precast segmental lining for tunnels

to cater to the curves, corrosion resistant steel reinforcement, fusion bonded epoxy coated steel reinforcement,

construction of twin shaft sewage pumping station (amongst the largest in the world) etc.

The Nuclear Island Connected Building (NICB) of the 500 MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, a large

reinforced concrete building complex of approximately 101.5 m x 94 m size, consists of nine buildings connected

monolithically to each other. The NICB was analysed with a mathematical model for the structure using Finite

Element (FE) method which idealises the various elements in the structural systems into finite elements. The FE

consists of 1,70,000 nodes leading to about 10,00,000 degrees of freedom. The total number of elements in the

model is about 1,00,000.

Design of Fuelling Machine for the 300 MW Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR), conceptualized

by BARC as a thorium based power reactor using convective cooling by light water in the primary cooling

system, came true due to the innovative approach adopted by TCE. The fuelling machine for the vertical AHWR

incorporates the design features of fuelling machines used in horizontal type CANDU reactors for the first time.

When the need arose to enhance the conveyance capacity of treated water for Mumbai city, it was decided

to go in for tunnels, as laying of further pipelines above ground was found difficult due to non availability of

space. Tunnel Boring Machine was deployed as against the conventional drill and blast method which would

have posed severe problems, especially in highly populated and built-up areas. This technique is now being

extensively used by others also.

For the National Centre for Radio Astronomy, TCE was the obvious choice for the Giant Metrewave Radio

Telescope (GMRT) project. A world class facility, GMRT is the world’s largest steerable radio telescope where all

thirty antennae (45 m diameter each) can see one object or can be programmed to see different parts of the sky.

TCE unique methodology innovated earlier for leak detection in intermittent water supply system was used

extensively for the Nepal Leak Detection and Waste Control Program.
