HEILA: Integrated business platform ofdistributed energy resources
Research objectives
Development and verification of general platform connecting flexible resourcesand market players
Tasks:• Define the most critical/promising business use cases based on on-line
operation of active resources• Define functional and non-functional architecture for integrated platform
connecting flexible resources and applications/market players• Build up some pilot installations (use cases) for control of µgrids and for
new business models e.g. for customer driven energy communities
Integrated business platform ofdistributed energy resources
How to realize?

• FusionGrid project, 1.1.2018 – 30.6.2020, funded by Busines Finland, BEAM
• Consortium partners: LUT, Aalto, Nokia, GEF, SYK
• Electricity+connectivity concept platform for developing countries
• PV-ES-Kuha BS-DC-grid-basic loads-µGrid control-digital services
– Off-grid µGrid system concept platform
• Concept determination + piloting in Green Campus and in Africa
• Concept development based on user experience and research carried
out throughout the project

Multi-objective role of battery energy storages in energy system
1. How to optimize the stakeholder -specific utilization of an individual BESS for differentpurposes (e.g. peak-cutting, control of frequency and voltage, optimization of reactive powerbalance, electricity trade in day-ahead, intraday, and ancillary markets, back-up power for end-user / network, etc.)?
2. How to optimize the operation of a system with multiple battery energy storage systemswith different sizes, locations, and owners?
Multi-use applicationof various battery
storage units
DIGI-USER - Smart Services for Digitalisation• DIGI-USER – LUT’s solution oriented research platform• Key focus is to provide the user-centric approach to systemic issues. In such approach, problems, needs, barriers, and solutions will
be revealed by co-creating with users. The means to do this are, for instance, user-driven “real-life laboratories”, Living Labs, anddata analytics.
• Research platform combines different expertise of 4 research teams:• Smart energy systems
• Leader Assoc. Prof. Samuli Honkapuro• Expertise in market, regulation, and business models in energy sector, demand response, microgrid economics and technology, energy
storage applications
• Smart services for everyday living contexts• Leader Prof. Helinä Melkas• Expertise in social sciences, socio-technological transition and innovation systems, systemic innovation, service and business model
