El gerundio• A gerund is a form of a verb used as a noun, whereas a participle is a form

of verb used as an adjective or as a verb in conjunction with an auxiliary verb. • In English, the present participle has the same form as the gerund, and the

difference is in how they are used.

Eg. I am walking. = present participleEg. Walking is good for you. =gernund (used as a noun)

Page 9: En la escuela

• In Spanish, the gerundio can also be combined with different helping verbs.

• Remember that you form the gerundio by dropping the infinitive ending and adding –ando to –ar verbs and –iendo to –er and –ir verbs.

• Jugar= jugando• Hacer= haciendo• vivir-=viviendo

• When the stem of an –er or –ir verbs ends in a vowel, change –iendo to –yendo. Leer = leyendo• Stem-changing –ir verbs also have a stem change in the gerundio form.Dormir –durmiendo divertir-divirtiendo
