Call for new community safety volunteersCumbrians interested in helping keep their communities safe are being encouraged to come forward and team up with the Fire and Rescue Service.

Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is looking for new faces to join its community safety team to help spread the fire safety message.

Volunteers assist the work of the Fire and Rescue Service in a variety of roles from carrying out home fire safety checks and fitting free smoke alarms to delivering Heartstart life-support courses.

They are also involved in:

• Assisting at events and community days. • Getting involved in campaigns and speaking to residents about community and road safety issues. • Introducing emergency plans to communities to reduce the impact of fire or flooding on peoples’ lives. • Raising awareness of the Fire and Rescue Service at community events with Firefit activities including the climbing wall and soccer cages.

Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) was an annual campaign that celebrated the contribution made by millions of volunteers across the UK.

Each member of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service’s community volunteer team is given varied training, a uniform and expenses and operates within a formal structure to ensure high standards of service are maintained.

As well as learning new skills and helping to keep the county safe, signing up as a volunteer is a good way to meet new people and give something back to the community.

Currently Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service has around 80 volunteers county-wide and is looking to boost that number by taking on new volunteers.

And with there being no such thing as a regular volunteer, people from all backgrounds and ages are being encouraged to come forward and commit as little or as much time as they can spare.

Councillor Barry Doughty, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “Our volunteers do an excellent job and play a vital role in the work of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service.

“Fire prevention and educating people about the dangers of fires is a major focus of what we do, so our volunteers are absolutely key to enabling us to get out into communities and deliver the fire safety message that saves lives.

“The Fire Service puts a lot of time and resources into training volunteers and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to carry out their varied roles.

“Volunteers’ Week is an ideal opportunity for those thinking about volunteering to get involved, so I’d urge people to contact us and find out more.”

Anybody interested in becoming a Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service volunteer should call 01768 812551 or email [email protected] for an application pack or to find out more information.

Below, Alan Johnson from Grange over Sands outlines his volunteering experiences;

“I have been a Community Volunteer with Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service for five years.

Since becoming a volunteer I have increased by skills and knowledge and I am able to offer excellent fire safety advice to people in their homes. I am also able to deliver Heartstart to community groups to enable people to react to emergency situations and carry out CPR.

Volunteering makes a big difference in communities, I feel by passing on fire safety advice, fitting smoke detectors and discussing escape plans as a service we contribute to the falling number of fires in Cumbria and increase safety in the home.

I enjoy the regular contact I have with other volunteers and Fire Service personnel, my favourite activities all involve giving out advice to the general public on fire safety and road safety both at public events, and also working with other organisations and agencies on joint operations such as Streetsafe and emergency planning exercises.

There are so many benefits to volunteering for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, for me it is about meeting people from various backgrounds with different life experiences and making a contribution to the care and well being of the community.”
