GORDON C. HILLGordon Hill, one of the verykind and gentle people of ourindustry, passed away in his47th. year, Friday June 12, 1970.A very big booster of Canada'scountry artists, Gord was alsoresponsible for the launching ofmany young new talents intothe world of country entertain-ment. His trips to "Music City"(Nashville) for the Country Con-vention, became a once a yearpilgrimage. Besides meetingwith new and old U.S. countryfriends, he became one of ourbest known country ambassa-dors and counted among hismany friends several of the topnames in the business includ-ing Johnny Cash and GeorgeHamilton IV.It was Gord Hill who, alongwith Ben Kerr, helped launchthe country career of BernieEarly, who's Columbia record"Chaser For The Blues" be-came nationally known. It was

also Gord Hill who gave a largehelping hand to the CountryJewels and Beverly Baxter andmany more. As a record producerhe had developed a unique rap-port with his groups and artistsand as a promoter had gainedthe respect of the industry.Although better known for hisgood deeds to country folk, Gordwas also highly respected as anindustry printer and detail man.He had been associated withColumbia Records for elevenyears as head of their printingdepartment and branched out todo independent printing as aservice to the industry. He laterformed his own company, HillLithographers, which he de-veloped into a very successfulbusiness, showing even greaterpotential at time of his death.Gord's sudden passing was anadded shock being as he hadalways appeared in good health, and was a constant visitor, oftenthree or four times a week, toRPM and our neighbouring artfirm, Groovyart. He had becomea very dear friend and businessassociate. His recent complaintsof headaches led to his lapsinginto a coma, the week of June8th., where, at Toronto's Sunny -brook Hospital, he appeared torally but suffered a relapse.Death was attributed to a brainhemorrhage. Our sincerest sympathy to Gord'swife Dolena, his four childrenRicky, David, Eleanor and Glenn, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs.Alfred Hill.

Friar's Takes OverTown TavernDarlene Black, of Public RelationsAssociates, advises of the Friar'smanagement takeover of the TownTavern located at Queen andVictoria Streets in downtownToronto. To mark the new change, manage-ment made a very unusual offer toany girl or woman, be they feministor otherwise. She became animmediate guest of the house ofeither the Wagon Wheel Pub or inthe main -floor dining room andlounge area, if she arrived anytime during the given date whichwas June 9th - in a bikini. To add further incentive, a prizeof a brand new Bikini outfit wasoffered up for the most daring orunusual bikini at lunch, cocktailtime, and during the evening. Thesame day also saw a parade ofbathing costumes dating back toearly "down to the knees" costumes. The Town's Wagon Wheel Pubintroduced a new Canadian record-ing artist (1) in Johnny Thorsonwho, along with his own banjo, teams up with ragtime pianistAlex Reed. He is also set for aCBC-TV debut within the next fewweeks. A native of Winnipeg, hetook his schooling in Calgary. Heis the son of Dr. S.B. Thorson, aspecialist in internal medicine inCalgary. He didn't dig the medicalprofession and after a couple ofyears of college it was a toss upbetween social work and thebanjo. The banjo won out. He isone of the most gifted banjopluckers in the business, havinglived with a four string plectrumbanjo since the age of 12. Heexplains his reason for the plectrumover the tenor because "it's long -necked for chord melody." Herefers to chord melody as "Youget the lead notes and a full chord. On the tenor banjo it's more single -string notes." Thorson adds a newdimension to the banjo sound whichis often restricted to Dixieland,honky-tonk, or roaring twenties. He has had much success addingcontemporary rhythms. His Capitol recording shows hisversatility with the banjo onmaterial ranging trom "So What'sNew, "Dr. Zhivago Theme" and"Tiger Rag".

Warwick -Koffman Pack O'KeefeThe June 14th appearance of DionneWarwick, Scepter recording artist, and Revolver star Moe Koffman, pulled a capacity house to thisCKFM/A&A presentation. In viewof the heavy demand for tickets, press passes were apparently sus-pended by the O'Keefe Centre, how-ever, RPM's reviewer Claire LouiseLalonde was so intent on catchingMiss Warwick's act, she joined thebox office lineup. Her review fol-lows:

A short but polishedperformanceThe only disappointing factor aboutthe Dionne Warwick show (14) wasthe short actual stage appearancemade by Miss Warwick. After a lengthy first half of MoeKoffman (whose musical appear-ance was enhanced by Lenny Breau,Rob McConnell, and Doug Riley),plus the intermission, we finallygot the first taste of the promisedevening. The Constellations, one of thebrightest male trios in a long time, whetted our appetite with a per-formance of polished choreographyand vocal arrangements.Polished was also the word forDionne Warwick. When she finallydid come on, the night of "musicto remember", in her words, wentmuch too quickly for the enthusias-tic audience. Here is a performer with unusuallywell-balanced warmth and power, interpretatively and vocally, whetherthe song was "Walk On By", "I'llNever Fall In Love Again", or

"Promises, Promises". It has beensaid that hers is an extremelyflexible voice, sensitve to timingas well as lyrics. It was, indeed, emphasized at the O'Keefe forthis very critical Toronto Sundaycrowd.

The finale ( a medley of five num-bers - mostly Bacharach material)done with the expert backing of theConstellations, conveyed the themeof peace and brotherly love, mosteffectively. The evening seemed shorter by thefact that Miss Warwick did notanswer the curtain call or appearfor the encore.Canadian Revolver recording group,CHIMO, made a special appearancein the lounge of the O'Keefe duringthe intermission of the DionneWarwick Show.

Evidently the packed house helpedgive CHIMO a larger audience, therefore, greater exposure.Though the set was not a long one,

It can be interest-ing, but it will be very rewardingto the winner. The title should,in some way, indicate the Awardis Canadian.A quick check on the names al-ready submitted indicates theCanadian feeling is foremostwithin the trade. Many of thesuggestions are excellent andhave picked up the feeling ofthe industry, indicating a strong-er than ever nationalistic feeling.

Fruition of Canadian Country Scene By Walt Greal is

The Canadian country scene isfast taking on a much differentimage. It is, in fact, becomingCanadian. Much of the change isdue the efforts of songwriters, country radio personalites, recordcompanies and a fine fine qualityeffort by Canadian country artists. Some of the names that come tomind include George Taylor, TheMercey Brothers, Gary Buck, DickDamron, Bev Munro, Donn Petrack,Bob McAdorey, D'Arcy Scott, MikeGraham, Lynn Jones, Angus Walker,Jury Krytiuk, Don Turner, DonnaRamsay, Stompin' Tom Connors,Judy Lynn, Ben Kerr, Roy McCaull,Mickey Sheppard, Tommy Hunter,Ray Griff, Gene McLellan, RhythmPals and many many others includ-ing the late Gordon Hill, who passedaway June 12 of this year (seeobituary). Radio stations have alsodone much in pushing the Canadiancountry image, and without damageto their ratings. John Hart, of thegiant CFGM, has established an"open door" policy for new andestablished Canadian country re-cording acts. Yorkton's CJGX hasalso adopted a "push Canadian"policy and their Ron Waddell reportsexcellent acceptance by listeners. There are many more people acrossthe country, too numerous to men-tion here, who have put their backsbehind our new found country greats.RPM will be spotlighting thesepeople as the weeks go by and willmake an all-out effort to gathermore news on the domestic countryscene.

A newcomer, Mike Graham, has ex-ploded onto the scene with a Rodeosingle, produced by Gary Buck, en-titled "No Pity For A Fool". The

plug side was also written by Buck(Beechwood Music-BMI) with theflip "Sad Sad Fact" out of Graham'sown catalogue of original material.Graham's deck makes another moveup the RPM Country Fifty to No. 20and from reports received by radiostations, record stores and London'sOntario sales manager, Ken McFar-land, it looks good for Graham tomake even greater advances.Graham has been a fairly quiet coun-try boy. Born in October of 1942, hetook an interest in music at the agefive with piano instruction fromTorontonian Berlin. Mikedidn't get the country calling inthe beginning. He started out alittle confused like most of today'syoungsters and trod the rock androll path, as a feature singer withThe Rockatones. He became a bigname with the rock and rollers of1959 and kept it up until 1961 whenhe moved to Montreal. Still scratch-ing with the rockers, he joined agroup known as The Roadrunnersand ran throughout Canada and theU.S. sharing billings with some ofthe big names of the day like JoeyDee and The Starliters, The Ronet-tes, and many more.Graham suddenly saw the light ofcountry, in 1965. He dropped allhis associations with the "hip-sters" and moved into the gloriousfeeling of insecurity with the Cana-dian country crowd. At this timedomestic country successes couldbe counted on one hand. Anyway, after hours, day, weeks, and threeyears of pickin' and writin' andcatalogin' an impressive volumeof his own material. He was, bynow, somewhat of a hermit. Hepreferred to stay out of the lime-

light and restricted his joy -takingto just hearing other singers per-form his material. He had severalof his copyrights published bySummerlea Music of Montreal, afew of which he'll revive on hissoon -to -be -released Rodeo album.

The next move for Graham wasback to Ontario and a somewhatsettling in Southwestern Ontario. He got the itch to perform againand became a fairly big name through-out the area with a reward later ofhis own weekly television show onCFPL-TV London. No slouch whenit comes to finding solid employ-ment when the circuit runs a littledry, Graham moved into the publish-ing business in a big way. He im-pressed Andrew Twa, president ofBerandol Music, with his admini-strative abilities, and was appoint-ed vice president of this powerfulpubbery.

Graham had been kicking aroundthe recording idea for severalyears but hadn't really wanted tobecome involved until he felt hewas ready. He checked out a fewof the new and old record bustin'types and clicked with the oldmaster himself, George Taylor, oneof the pioneers of the Canadiancountry disc business. Much ofGraham's push was through hisassociation with some of the solidand sincere people in the business.Another famous booster of theCanadian scene, Whitey Hains ofBMI (Canada), was also instrument-al in furthering Graham's recordcareer. Next for this young countrytalent was a tie-in with record pro-ducer Gary Buck. The rest is shap-ing up to be an exciting and avery nice feeling for all those whohave helped Mike Graham becomeone of the new and very greatCanadian country talents.

Columbia's Mercey Brothers adding a little colour to theCBC-TV "Countrytime''show out of Halifax. They've justentered the charts with "Pickin' Up The Pieces''.

Imperial recording artist Jackie De Shannon recently playeda packed engagement in Montreal. She is seen here with DaveDoucette (I) Liberty Group Mgr and London's Pierre Bel lemare.

Live Acts On"Luncheon Date"The recent successful "live"performance of Jacqui and Lindsay(Morgan) on the CBC-TV "Lunch-eon Date" has apparently causedmajor changes and extra buckspending for the publically ownedCorporation. With youthful pro-ducer Nigel Napier -Andrews, everconscious and fearful of the gen-eration gap, at the helm, ElwoodGlover has, not only developeda "Pop popper" image but, con-trol of one of the most highlyrated network shows, seen atthat time. It is hoped a bettertime scheduling is in order forthis easy going noon -hour showfor the housewives and shut-ins.It is expected however, thatGlover and his one cameramanwill be joined by another, maybetwo cameramen, a larger audienceand, of course, another locationand perhaps a trio of musicians. What makes the foregoing almostfact is the increasing of Glover'sshow to 90 minutes, Sept. 7th.,which makes almost impossible, the present set-up.Andrews has been experimentingwith musical performance excite-ment, as reported above. He'sapparently been successful intalking the Corporation into in-creasing the budget of the showby paying for this added attrac-tion. Jacqui and Lindsay havebeen signed for a return date(July 17) and the following be-tween now and then: (19) folk -singer Karen Jones; (26) folk -singer Dee Higgins; (29) Irishfolksinger Owen McBride; (Jul 6)Columbia recording artist FrancoisJourdain.Reason for the signing of onlysingles and doubles is the limitedspace available in the lobby ofthe Four Seasons Hotel, wherethe show is presently shot. Evenwith two, the cameraman works

Welcome . .

PAUL CRAIG

Everyday is

Tuesdaymiracles zeroing in on his movingtargets. Those who are of the opinion theyhave suitable talent and can ac-company themselves on otherthan a grand piano, are requestedto contact Andrews at the CBC(Toronto) for a possible audition. It is hoped, Andrews won't beplagued by the old guard CBCperformers who just don't com-municate anymore - if they everdid.

Live At LeedsBreaking RecordsCompo's Allan Matthews reportsthat the company's latest Whorelease on the Decca label, "Liveat Leeds" is turning into one ofthe hottest properties they havehandled in some time. In mostcases product is being sold fasterthan it can be shipped from thepressing plant with some retailoutlets reporting it selling fasterthan the two previous Beatlesalbums. Top forty stations acrossthe country report a great deal ofreaction to the "Substitute","Summertime Blues" and "MyGeneration" tracks. The set hasbeen accorded praise from re-viewers across the continent andit now shows signs of outstrippingthe group's previous best-seller,"Tommy".

Capitol's Brian Brownea Sound Canadian

By Claire Louise Lalonde

"We sent a tape to the musicdepartment of a California highschool. One hundred and fiftypupils between the ages of 12and 16 listened to it. They allliked it but some had never intheir lives heard instrumentalmusic!"

(Brian Browne)It must've been quite an experi-ence; even for those who've heardinstrumental music, it's somethingelse to listen to Brian Browne andhis trio. Those who came to theGeorge (where the trio is currentlyplaying) in Toronto, come to heartalent at its best, and they get it.Montreal -born Brian Browne hasbeen grooming himself for tenyears for the so-called big break,by playing the major gigs inToronto and appearing on coast -to -coast television. He studiedfor a while at Berkley in Boston, then under Oscar Peterson inToronto. But another Peterson heis not; he's individualistic.Brian's keyboard work is brilliant, clear, emotive (somewhat likethat of his favourite - GlenGould), always in good taste. Thetone is rich, colourful and smooth;the sound almost tight. He doesthe arranging as well as some ofthe composing. In his usual un-

assuming manner, he claims; "Wedon't really do any composing. We have a few originals we alwayswork on and if they're good enoughto record, then we give them aname."Like the "Bread Song"; one of thenumbers on the album which oncewas used for a bread commercial."It was done twice as fast, withstrings and harpsichord." explainsBrian. When they decided torecord it, they toned it down, andgave it the only name they couldthink of.In recordings as well as in person,Brian plays a fine cross-sectionof music ranging from rock - "Hi -Heel Sneakers", and folk - "If IWere a Carpenter", to ballads"What the World Needs Now" andjazz - Brian's own "Morning,Noon and Nighttime, Too".Speaking of albums; "The Letter"seems to be paving the road wellfor the next Capitol album - yetuntitled - which ought to be a gas. It's total Moog Synthesizer. Brian'srecent single made good gains onthe RPM 100 chart. While waiting for the release ofthe next single or album, BrianBrowne is doing commercials, backup work on CBC's "AfterNoon" show, as well as on albums(He did the first Anne Murrayalbum).Brian is well -supported musicallyby Skip Beckwith, bass, withBrian for eight years, and BrucePhilp on drums, with Brian andSkip for one year. Brian may bethe leader but he doesn't stealthe spotlight. All three blend togive a very unique sound thatshould click with all music -lovers.

Jacqui & Lindsay BreakOn Canadian SceneWhen Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay Morganmoved from Cardiff Wales toBurlington Ontario, three yearsago, there only wish was to behappy together, with a possiblefamily, and maybe a furtheringof their singing and songwritingcareers. This son of CaptainThomas Morgan had, with hiswife, been associated with aWelsh gospel group for six yearswhich was a little difficult tofold into the memory chest.Prior to coming to Canada, Lind-say had entered his composition"Rape Of The Fair Country"(previously entitled "A Song OfWales") in a BBC "Song ForWales" contest conducted inhonour of the investiture of ThePrince Of Wales (1969). Out of650 entries, Linday's took secondplace, which carried a cash prizeof 70 pounds. They were settledin Canada when informed of thewin. It should be noted this songwas written over three years ago, when ecology was just another"smart college word". Lindsayhad worked the Welsh mines andhad become heart sick over thepollution menace becoming somuch a part of the countrysideday after day.Married and happy they are, butsettled, they're not, although theyhave just bought themselves anew home in Burlington, fromwhere they hope to tour. They played a few of the clubsaround Hamilton and Burlingtonand continued to pen a largerepertoire of original material.Lindsay formed his own pubbery,Rido Music (BMI) to look afterhis growing catalogue. One of their big breaks camewhile playing Ottawa/Hull'sDuvernay Hotel. Andy Anka, father of the famous Paul, whoheads up a successful manage-ment firm, caught Jacqui andLindsay's act and was completelygassed. He signed them to amanagement contract and sincethe signing many new doors haveopened for the talented couple. They were signed to play thenewly renovated Jarvis House, located in Toronto's "Hairydistrict" and managed to attracta better than usual class of cus-tomer. Toronto beer halls havelong been notorious for Fridaynight fights, even without tele-

vision and for attracting a crowdof lonely loudmouths whose onlyambition was to soak up as muchof the suds as time allowed -thanks to the Ontario LiquorBoard. However, times havechanged and the Jarvis Househas given class distinction tothe beer drinker and they couldn'thave accomplished this feat inany better manner than with theintroduction of the Gospel -shed,hard rock and soul duo of Jacquiand Lindsay. They do still retainan excellent medley of negrospirituals that has a somewhatsobering effect on the "drafters':Welsh folk songs, standards andshow tunes seem to envelop theiraudience with the Morgan's very

elaborate and sophisticated soundsystem that gives an almostcaressing feeling to Lindsay'sbeautiful 12 string guitaring.Jacqui, besides looking verypretty, rolls a pretty good tam-bourine and with an electronicdrum machine (their own creation),they deliver a very strong groupsound. No doubt their appearanceand performance on the CBC-TV's"Luncheon Date" during theirToronto engagement, helped beefup the Jarvis House draw.Currently playing the Brass Railin Halifax, they'll be back forOntario dates shortly includinga return engagement on "LuncheonDate", July 17.

his every move. He was unbeliev-ably charming, very much at ease, and performed a variety of songsin a highly pleasing manner.Accompanying himself on acous-tic guitar, or with his backupband, which included the famedsongwriter Carol King "Up OnThe Roof"), Danny Cootch onguitar - who is a real talent -and his drummer and bassist,James Taylor showed constrastingmoods. He was up for "KnockingAround My Soup" and "Don'tTalk Now", mellow on "SweetBaby James", "Carolina On MyMind", and bluesy for "Steam-rollin' Man". Taylor sing "Carolina On MyMind" - she had her share offans who cheered as she sang"Lay Down","What Have TheyDone To My Song" and others, including a rather jarring versionof "Ruby Tuesday". Wearing amagnificent gown of purple andbrocaded velvet, Melanie was ahuge hit. On the bill with herwere Brewer and Shipley, a folkduo, who have an album producedby Nick Gravenites and MikeBloomfield. They performed afew songs from that album andaccompanied themselves onacoustic guitars. They were apleasant surprise and I was sorrythey didn't play more than theydid.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Youngplayed six nights at the Fillmoreand my feeling about their per-formance was that Nash andCrosby are going to eventuallyjust be together and hopefullyStills and Young will re-formBuffalo Springfield, or do some-thing together! Nash really offendsme with his cutesy rapping, andthe acoustic set is far too long. Each one of them has a little spotto themselves, and perhaps thereal highlight of the night. I wasthere when Steve Stills played"For What It's Worth" on thepiano and got into a whole longpolitical, ad lib rap - chant -likething. It was fantastic and hadthe whole Fillmore audience outof their seats. Neil Young alsowas great doing his own songs, alone like: "Cinnamon Girl" and"Down By The River". Otherthan that, the group played allof the material from both of theirmillion selling albums, and somenew material as well. The nightthey finished, Bill Graham gavea party for them and The Who andC.S.N.Y. jammed onstage forawhile and made some of the bestmusic I've heard them do.Otherforms of youth culture..."Harlan Smythe Grossfeld" isa new book by author Henry Ed-wards, a frequent contributor tounderground magazines. The bookdeals with Grossfeld, who is ateacher in a ghetto school byday, and a combination socialclimber -celebrity -hippie by night. The characters in the book areall part of the underground -alter-nate culture scene in New YorkCity, and many familiar facescan be seen It is a hilariouslyfunny book, yet has a great deal

to say about the scene in general.Read it."The Strawberry Statement" wasscreened in NYC last week andwas extremely well received. It isa moving film, a thinly disguisedaccount of what happened at Co-lumbia University during the stu-dent strike, and any faults thefilm may have tend to be over-looked (perhaps due to the emo-tional relationship it has topolitical events of late) becauseit is an honest attempt to tellwhat happened, what is happen-ing and what will happen on thecampuses of this country.I saw Aretha Franklin in LasVegas a few weeks ago - and

I see by a recent story in RPMthat booking agencies are final-ly going to organize. It's abouttime. They've all been workingat cross purposes and I feelsure if they can get together, they'll make many good changes. There are a number of thingsthey can do. They can certainlyimprove their own public rela-tions within the industry. Iwould say, that at the moment, booking agencies rightly de-serve the low opinion the publichas of them through some of thepeople representing this im-portant arm of showbusiness. The lack of interest some book-ing agencies have in lookingafter their clients and theirown businesses is good reasonfor the industry to look downat the lack of ethics and slop-piness of the average bookingagency. The fact that manyagencies do not abide by anyrules, either industry or ethi-cal, brings further disdain tothe booking industry.Unfortunately, when one book-ing agency is unethical, allthe others are forced to joinin the ruthlessness or closetheir business. It would onlytake one successful ethicalbooking agency to turn thetables and make all the otherstoe the line. A good agencycould take over the cream ofthe business. It would put anend to the agency that cheats, threatens, books underscaleand uses the musician as apawn. It would upgrade thedignity of the agency businessand the musician as well.

Billy WhelanOne of Nova Scotia's veteran enter-tainers with over thirty years inshowbusiness, is folk singerBilly Whelan.Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Billgave his first public performanceat the age of thirteen, at a localvariety show. Since then he hasperformed on almost every medium

of entertainment, including nationaland local television, radio andrecordings. At one time having hisown CBC Network radio showcalled Ricochet. It would be almost impossible tolist all of the countless hundredsof appearances that he has madein the past thirty years, at clubs, exhibitions, fairs, banquets, hospitals, etc. Not only in theAtlantic Provinces, but in manyparts of Canada, and the U.S.A.In regard to songs, Bill will singwhatever the program requires, folk, sacred, country, popular, comedy, etc., and like many otherartists he has several of his ownoriginal numbers.Except when he is away on engage-ments, Bill lives with his wifeMuriel, in a modern house trailer afew miles outside Windsor, NovaScotia. Along with their two petsa dog Rex, and a sixteen year oldcat Blackie.Although he is not working fulltime now in the entertainmentbusiness, last year he had torefuse some offers, due to con-flicting dates with engagementsalready accepted. Recent showshave included mostly Maritimeengagements.Equally at home in a village hall,or before the cameras on a national

television show, he has often beendescribed as a wonderful showman,by his friends in showbusiness, and over the years he has receivedmany such compliments fromexhibition crowds, to young patientsin a childrens hospital, his

performances having won himacclaim from audiences of all ages. One of the many things that hasmade Bill popular, is his abilityto reach his audience, his obviouslove of singing, and his some-times serious, sometimes humourouseasy going personality appealsto all types of audiences, he neverrefuses to do a request if timepermits, and he knows the song.Since he was a teenager music hasalways been a big part of his life, but love of the countryside isreflected in his choice of a parttime occupation, as a professionalguide for the Department of Landsand Forest.A member of the local branch of themusicians union for over twenty-five years, in comparing the enter-tainment business past and present,Bill will tell you that styles havechanged, new ideas and newartists have come along, but theaudience still appreciates a goodshow.
