workforce deficit and creating a diverse talent pool in Nebraska, the College is playing a leadership role in attracting more women to its program through a number of initiatives:

iSTEM After School Program

• iSTEM is Innovative, Interdisciplinary, Information Technology-enhanced STEM (iSTEM)

• iSTEM after school is a pilot out-of-school time (OST) IT program offered by the College for middle schools.

• A pilot program funded for 2014-15 AY by the Sherwood Foundation has been launched in Lewis and Clark Middle School (OPS).

– The program has two individual classes--scratch programming and mobile application development—that are being offered sequentially twice during the academic year.

Summer IT Internship Program• Target Audience: High School Students

above 16 years

• Offered over eight intensive weeks in Summer

• Selected high school students work side-by-side with IS&T professors, staff and graduate students in R&D areas and labs such as:

– Robotics,

– Bioinformatics,

– Software engineering

– Information assurance

– Public health informatics,

– Database-driven web development,

– IT innovation

– Open community participation

– iOS/Droid app development,

– Unity game development

• School interns earn a stipend of $1,200 for the eight weeks.

• CodeCrush is an IT immersion experience for selected middle and high school girls (8th/9th grade) on the UNO campus.

• The program includes hands-on educational workshops, campus and cultural activities, corporate visits, panel discussions.

• Teacher mentors attended parallel sessions on how to incorporate emerging IT topics in their classes.

IT Innovation Cup• High School teams compete under a

theme – the 2015 Innovation Cup theme is "Solving Problems with Augmented and Virtual Reality.”

– The goal is to determine who can create the most innovative, creative and best IT-based solution given the current year’s problem requirements.

• High school teams are mentored by IS&T students over a whole year with a final event that includes showcasing the various projects in April.

• Nearly 250 people attending the inaugural event in 2013.

• The winning team is awarded the IT Innovation Cup for their school and a cash prize of $2000 ($750 for second place, $250 for third place).

– The teacher coach is also compensated for their time. 2013 Winners: V.J. and Angela Skutt Catholic High School

Techademy: Annual Summer Workshops

• Target audience: Students from ages 11 to 16 years

• Workshops on topics such as 3-D Modeling, Gaming with Flash, Bioinformatics, Mobile App Development, Scratch programming, and Unity game development.

• A total of 24 weekly, half-day sessions in June/July are offered.– About 250 students can enroll in these sessions.

– Economically disadvantaged students are provided scholarships to attend program.

Capture the Flag (CTF)

High School Competition

• The CTF event hosts metro area high

school students who work in teams to

solve over 30 technical security challenges

and find "flags," or weaknesses, and

submit them for points.

– Student teams compete for prizes including

Nexus 7 tablets and Kindle e-book readers.

New Teacher Certification

Pathways @ IS&T• Guiding Principle: Provide teachers with hands-on content knowledge in the

Computer Science discipline and teaching methods specific to CS content while they earn Nebraska’s IT Supplemental Teaching Endorsement

• Option 1 (now available): Undergraduate pathway – targeted to pre-service– 15 credit hours in CS & IT coursework

– 3 credit hours Teaching Methods in Computing Education

• Option 2 (pending approval): Graduate pathway – targeted to in-service– No undergraduate CS background required, online graduate program (MS in CSTE), can

be completed in phases

– Phase 1: 18 graduate credit IT endorsement:• 6 credits blended foundational CS content + pedagogy

• 9 credits of graduate computing coursework in theory, systems and development

• 3 credits Teaching Methods in CS Education

– Phase 2: +6-9 credits to CSTE Graduate Certificate from UNO• 3 credits in teacher education

IT Professional Development Academy• The College of IS&T launched its first "IT Professional Academy" in August 2011.

– The goal is to leverage the intellectual expertise available at the university to offer high quality, affordable, locally accessible, cutting edge IT professional education and training on topics of interest to working professionals.

• Our workshops combine current research perspectives with problems of practical interest to IT professionals.

• Cost of attendance: $200 for a 4 hour session including either breakfast or lunch.

• Academy sessions are held once each quarter on Thursday and Friday of a week.

• Attendees can apply these training sessions toward their certifications by self-reporting professional development units (PDUs) or continuing education units (CEUs).
