Gentlemen’s Competitions

Section 1 : Introduction

1. Competitions The club’s competitions consist mainly of two types:-

o Match Play Knock Outs running throughout the season.

o Stroke Play in the form of Medal, Stableford, Bogey/Par competitions on allocated dates.

On Bank Holidays other forms of competition will take place, e.g. Four-Ball Stableford, as decided by the Competition Committee. Open Competitions and Member Invitations when visitors from other clubs play are also included in the calendar. All Competitions will be run using the Rules of Golf, CONGU Unified Handicapping System

and Stoke Rochford Competition Rules (Appendix A).

2. Entry Requirements Commencing play in a competition is prohibited before 6.30am. Entry to competitions, except when

otherwise directed, is by signing in and paying the relevant entry fee at the Pro Shop before commencing play on the day of the competition.

Starters between 6.30am and 8am (the opening time of the Pro’s Shop) must leave their name and entry fee in the box outside the Gents Locker Room door. Competitors in Stroke Play competitions must have signed in at the Pro’s Shop and teed off by 6pm at weekends and Bank Holidays or by 7pm in the midweek Stableford Competitions. All competitors having completed their round must return their scorecard and enter their score into the

Touch Screen Computer situated inside the clubhouse on the bar area. This should be completed by 10pm at Weekends and Bank Holidays, and by 10.30pm in the midweek Stableford competitions. Scorecards should be deposited in the box near the clubhouse door. NO RETURNS should also be recorded in the same manner.

3. Competition Prizes Unless otherwise specified, competition prizes in the form of vouchers redeemable in the Professional’s

Shop are presented at the Captains’ Presentation Evenings. These are normally on the first Friday of each

month, April to November. Any change to this day will be displayed on the board in the Foyer of the Clubhouse. A list of prizes to be presented at each Presentation Evening will be displayed on the notice board in the Gents Changing Room before each presentation. Apologies for non-attendance of prize winners should be tended to the Captain or Competition Chairman before the Presentation Evening. Vouchers not collected at

the specified Presentation Evening will be passed over to the next Presentation Evening and if not collected then will be handed to the Professional’s Shop for placing against the members’ account.

4. Handicap Procedure. Competitions marked QC in the Fixture booklet are Qualifying Competitions for Handicapping purposes. Please note that Seniors Competitions, with the exception of the Senior Salver, are administered by the

Seniors' Section. Information about the Seniors’ Section can be obtained from the Seniors’ Secretary. Members’ Handicaps are maintained in accordance with the current issue of the CONGU Unified Handicapping Scheme using a computer running Club 2000 software (approved by England Golf). The club’s policy of adjustment is immediate.

At the close of a competition a member’s handicap is adjusted and any change to his playing handicap is

displayed on the notice board at the entrance to the Gents changing rooms. Check the computer on the bar area or the How Did I Do web site http://www.howdidido.com for latest exact handicap. General Play, Exceptional Score Reductions (ESR) and Annual Review of Handicaps are undertaken in accordance with Clause 23 (Review of Handicaps) and Appendix M of the CONGU-UHS. Signed Handicap Certificates can be obtained from the Handicap Chairman on request or from the

What is a Handicap?

A handicap is a system to enable golfers of all abilities to compete on an equal basis. Handicaps are divided into the following Categories:

o Category 1 Handicaps of 5.4 or less.

o Category 2 Handicaps of 5.5 to 12.4 inclusive. o Category 3 Handicaps of 12.5 to 20.4 inclusive. o Category 4 Handicaps of 20.5 to 28 inclusive.

o Category 5 Handicaps 28 to 36 inclusive (Ladies Only) A player’s Exact Handicap is his handicap calculated in accordance with the provisions of the System to one decimal place. A player’s Playing Handicap is his Exact Handicap calculated to the nearest whole number (0.5 is rounded upwards).

Can I adjust my own handicap? Clause 20.11 of the CONGU UHS requires a player to reduce their handicap downwards if they have returned scores in qualifying events that has reduced their playing handicap. They must do this before they play in another qualifying competition or match play event. Failure to do so would result in the player being disqualified from the competition for playing from a higher handicap than which they are entitled. All

handicap increases can only be made by the players Home Club. Can my handicap lapse? If you are a member of a Club in England your handicap cannot lapse if you fail to submit a stipulated number of qualifying scores per year. All that is required to retain a handicap is that you continue playing membership of an affiliated Golf Club.

More Information Required ? Members who do not hold a handicap but wish to acquire one must submit at least three cards over 18 holes, each of which shall be countersigned by a responsible person acceptable to the Handicap Committee. Please ask in the Pro Shop for advice and assistance in obtaining a handicap or contact the Handicap Chairman, details on page 2.
