ACADEMIC PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

In the first week, students will learn how to take vital signsand perform CPR. They will also work on key wildernessmedicine techniques and visit a simulation lab where medstudents and faculty are trained and evaluated.

In the second week, students put their skills to the test in amass casualty incident simulation during which studentstriage and stabilize victims. By using an experientiallearning approach, students will quickly engage in thesetopics, and the instructor introduces the underlying theoryand concepts as students tackle issues while working tosupport, diagnose, and save their patients.

GUEST SPEAKERS AND EXCURSIONS:

All students visit a simulation center for hands-on practice institching, suturing, intubation, and BLS skills led by leadingmedical trainers. Past visits have included the Yale Center forMedical Simulation, the UCSF Kanbar Simulation Center,STRATUS Center (affiliated with Harvard Medical School) and UCSan Diego’s SIM Center. Visits provide first-hand observations ofthe high-pressure/ life-saving world of an emergency room.

CURRICULUM ADVISORS

Carol Chen, MPH, MD & Andrea Tenner, MPH, MD - Dr. Chenserves as faculty at the Department of Emergency Medicine atUC San Francisco where she specializes in pediatric emergencymedicine as well as global health. Dr. Tenner serves as faculty atthe Department of Emergency Medicine at UC San Franciscowhere she is also the Director of the Global Health Fellowship.

INSTRUCTORS:

Instructor at New York – Dr. Enrique Valdespino, DoctorsWithout BordersDr. Valdespino graduated from Harvard Medical School with aMaster of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery. Prior toHarvard, Enrique worked as a physician with Compañeros enSalud México (CES), a sister organization of Partners in Health,after he completed his medical training. Video:

Instructor at UCLA – Violet Bagni, UCLAViolet Bagni is an EMT Clinical Instructor at UCLA where sheteaches the fundamentals of emergency medicine. Violet has 20years of experience educating her team members and nurses inemergency technical procedures, skill reviews, and up to datepatient care treatment.

Instructor at University of San Diego – Dr. Benjamin Supat, UCSan DiegoDr. Benjamin Supat is an emergency medicine physician,currently working as a resident in the Department of EmergencyMedicine at UC San Diego. Dr. Supat holds a BS from StanfordUniversity, a MPH from Washington University, and his MD fromUC San Diego.

Instructor in Boston - Cheryl Burke, DNP, RNCheryl Burke is an Assistant Clinical Professor at NortheasternUniversity, School of Nursing.
