Now the right time to invest in Indonesia: VP Jakarta, December 15, 2008 – Vice President Jusuf Kalla says now is the right time to invest in Indonesia as prices are low following declines in the prices of various products such as steel, Antara News Agency reported. Kalla said if businessmen invested now they would bear lower costs of development. "Now is the best time to invest. Two or three years from now, the economy will boom again," he said at an Investment Award presentation Wednesday. Recalling the 1998 crisis the vice president said that at the time many businessmen also declined to invest and as a result they lagged behind in meeting consumer demand when the economy was recovering. The vice president said he believed that in two or three years` time the world’s economy would be normal again. From the cost side making an investment now would be cheaper around 60% to 70%, he said, referring to the price of raw materials which have dropped 50% in addition to an abundant workforce with competitive wage levels.

Businessmen would no longer need to worry about power shortages because the 10,000 MW power development projects now underway would be ready in 2011 and 2012. “The world will not be in crisis forever. It will certainly revive again," he said. The vice president also believed the country’s exports would not be affected much by the current condition because most exports were primary materials which would always be needed. He admitted that in terms of value they would drop in line with the decline in the price of commodities but in terms of volume they would not drop much.

Pertamina unit needs $1B for geothermal investment

Jakarta, December 15, 2008 – PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) needs around $1 billion to develop several geothermal projects in Indonesia until 2012, Dow Jones reported on Friday. PGE president director Abadi Poernomo told reporters that several institutions such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the World Bank have expressed their interests to help finance the projects. The projects include exploration in Ulu Belu in southern Sumatra which could produce 110 MW of electricity, said Poernomo. PGE currently has 15 geothermal concession areas across Indonesia, which could produce a combined 272 MW, and capacity may increase sharply to 1,000 MW by 2014, he added.

E. Java geothermal projects to be auctioned: Govt.

"The joint committee will offer $3 million per kilowatt hour and will select three winners for each project," Herawati said Thursday. The first winner will be required to pay $10 million in advance as a guarantee and to start operations within six months. "If it fails to fulfill this condition, the project will be granted to the second winner," she said. Herawati said the province had a further nine geothermal deposits that would be offered to investors in the future. The nine, located in Madiun, Mojokerto, Probolinggo, Pacitan, Malang and Sumenep, have a combined potential capacity of 580 MW. Separately, the Director General for Coal and Geothermal Minerals at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, Bambang Setiawan, said the government would continue tapping renewable and environmentally friendly geothermal energy. "The government will not impose taxes on the imports of any materials for geothermal exploration as incentives for investors to produce the energy," he said. "The government will also explore the geothermal energy in Seulawah and Jaboi in Aceh, Jailolo in North Maluku, Ungaran in Central Java, Mt. Tapomas, Tangkuban Perahu and Cisolok in West Java and Sokoria in East Nusa Tenggara," he said.

Jakarta, December 9, 2008 - The government is to auction off geothermal resources in Ngebel, Ponorogo and Ijen, Banyuwangi, East Java, to improve power supplies in Java and Bali, The Jakarta Post reported. Head of the provincial energy and mineral resources agency, Tutut Herawati, said the government was preparing a joint team from the central government, provincial and regency administrations to open a tender for the two geothermal projects. The total capacity of the two sites is more than 400 MW.
