A HUMBLE HEART

"Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart." (Luke 2:19)

May the Virgin make our hearts humble and submissive like her son's heart. In her the heart of Jesus was formed.

Let us learn to be humble, accepting humiliations with joy. We have been created for great things---why then should we stoop to things that would blur the beauty of our heart?

How many things we can learn from the Virgin!......Ask Jesus to help personalize your love for Mary------in order to be closer to her, as he is; in order to share with her everything, even the cross. Every one of us must carry his or her own cross; it is our sign of belonging to Christ. We need Mary to help us share it.

Mary's greatness lay in her humility. It is not surprising that Jesus, who lived so close to her, seemed determined to have us learn one thing above all: humility of heart.

LET’S TALK LITURGYby Margaret O’Malley

Merry Christmas!

I have been listening to people talking about how happy they were to have December 26 off so they could put ‘Christmas away’! I think they have bought into the retail sale idea that the twelve days of Christmas are the days before December 25th! The twelve days of Christmas start on Christmas Day and end on January 5th.

There is an interesting history to the song The Twelve Days of Christmas.

It is an English Christmas carol. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the Church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember. To fit the number scheme, when you reach number 9, representing the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, the originator combined the 6 fruits that were similar: the fruit in each parenthesis is the one was not named separately. There are actually Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit.

The “True Love” one hears in the song is not a smitten boy or girlfriend but Jesus Christ, because truly Love was born on Christmas Day. The partridge in the pear tree also represents Him because that bird is willing to sacrifice its life if necessary to protect its young by feigning injury to draw away predators.

According to Ann Ball in her book, HANDBOOK OF CATHOLIC SACRAMENTALS:

Two turtle doves: the Old and New Testaments.

Three French hens: faith, hope, and love.

Four calling birds: four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Five golden rings: first five books of the Old Testament.

Six geese a-laying: six days of creation.

Seven swans-a-swimming: sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit----Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

Eight maids-a-milking: eight beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing: nine fruits of the Holy Spirit----Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience (Forbearance), Goodness (Kindness), Mildness, Fidelity, Modesty, Continency (Chastity).

Ten lords-a-leaping: Ten Commandments.

Eleven pipers piping: eleven faithful Apostles.

Twelve drummers drumming: twelve points of belief in The Apostles’ Creed.
