Dates/Times June 17 - July 31 (Monday – Friday) Breakfast 7:30a.m. – 8:00 a.m. No classes held on July 4th - 5th Summer School 8:00 a.m. – 12:05 p.m. Lunch 12:05 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.

Registration Register online or by using the form at the end of this guide. Courses are filled on first-come, first-served ba-sis and will close when the course is full.

Attendance Attendance is required for credit. Students enrolled in initial credit courses missing more than 3 absences

(excused or unexcused) will not receive credit.

Students enrolled in credit recovery courses missing more than 3 absences (excused or unexcused) will not receive credit.

Students arriving 15 minutes late or more at the start of class or who are 15 minutes late or more from break will be considered absent for the entire day.

Grading Procedures Students are to abide by the grading syllabus set by each summer school teacher.

Students enrolled in an English credit recovery course are required to complete a final written assess-ment.

Students enrolled in a Math credit recovery course are required to complete a final assessment.

Notes are calculated in the final grade.

The grade is based on the following criteria:

Summative = 40% Notes = 30% Quizzes / Formatives = 30%

Behavior Expectations All Summer School students will comply with the Discipline Code of Conduct set by the School District of

Beloit.

Students should be with a coach or teacher at all times.

Students should be off-campus before 1:00 p.m.

English Department ENGLISH 9 Part 1 - 0.5 credit ENGLISH 9 Part 2 - 0.5 credit Content: Required for graduation. This course follows the College Board Springboard curriculum set throughout the school year. This course will provide each student with a firm foundation in the four core skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will have to complete a written assignment to complete this course. ENGLISH 10 Part 1 - 0.5 credit ENGLISH 10 Part 2 - 0.5 credit Content: Required for graduation. This course follows the College Board Springboard curriculum set throughout the school year. This course will build upon the student’s previous experience in English 9. Each student will contin-ue in the study of literature. Students will have to complete a written assignment to complete this course. ENGLISH 11 Part 1 - 0.5 credit ENGLISH 11 Part 2 - 0.5 credit Content: Required for graduation. This course follows the College Board Springboard curriculum used through-out the school year. English 11 builds upon the student’s previous experience in English 9 and English 10. Each student will continue working within the four core skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. This is a required course in the study of the American Dream and focuses on American literature, including short stories, novels, drama, poetry and essays. Students will have to complete a writ-ten assignment to complete this course. ENGLISH 12 Part 1 - 0.5 credit ENGLISH 12 Part 2 - 0.5 credit Content: Required for graduation. This course follows the College Board Springboard curriculum used through-out the school year. English 12 will build upon the stu-dent’s previous experiences in English 9, English 10, Eng-lish 11. This required course focuses on the four core skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will have to complete a written assignment to complete this course.

Math Department ALGEBRA 1 Part 1 - 0.5 credit ALGEBRA 1 Part 2 - 0.5 credit Content: This course deals with the theory of Algebra and requires an ability to grasp abstract concepts. Stu-dents will study algebraic expressions, real numbers, solv-ing equations and word problems, polynomials, operations with polynomials, special products and factoring, algebraic fractions, functions, relations, graphs, rational and irration-al numbers and quadratic equations. Basic fact fluency is expected and reinforced in this course. Students will have to complete a written test to complete this course. GEOMETRY Part 1 - 0.5 credit GEOMETRY Part 2 - 0.5 credit Content: This course encompasses all the dimen-sions of the understanding of geometry: its shapes and forms; the skills of drawing, measurement, and visualiza-tion; its properties and deductive nature; its many uses; and the algebraic representation of geometry. The course emphasizes the concepts of coordinates, transformations, area, volume, congruence and similarity in relation to how they can be applied to solve problems in the physical world. Proof-writing and algebraic manipulation is exten-sively developed throughout the course. Students will have to complete a written test to complete this course. ALGEBRA 2 Part 1 - 0.5 credit ALGEBRA 2 Part 2 - 0.5 credit Content: This course requires a mastery of Algebra 1 material. The skills and concepts from Algebra 1 are the foundation of this course. Topics taught in this course in-clude linear and quadratic equations and systems, linear and quadratic inequalities and systems, polynomial func-tions, radical functions, rational functions, logarithmic and exponential functions, conic sections and graphing a varie-ty of functions. Both basic skill fluency and appropriate concept application are stressed in this course. Students will have to complete a written test to complete this course.

Science Department PHYSICAL SCIENCE 9 - Part 1 - 0.5 credit PHYSICAL SCIENCE 9 - Part 2 - 0.5 credit Content: Required for graduation. Students have an opportunity to explore the fields of Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science in detail in this course. Chemistry units in-clude matter, chemical, and nuclear reactions. Physics units include motion, forces, and energy. Students will also study topics on the universe, geology, and weather in the Earth Science portion of the course. This is considered a foundation course for other physical science courses. BIOLOGY SERIES: ECOLOGY - 0.5 credit Content: Required for graduation. The biological themes of genetics, evolution, cells, and population dy-namics will be taught from an ecological perspective. Stu-dents will identify different species and recognize how they fit in their environments. Activities include the building of a self-contained ecosystem (fish in a bottle), natural selec-tion studies, and plant and soil testing. BIOLOGY SERIES: HUMAN BIOLOGY - 0.5 credit Content: Required for graduation. The biological themes of genetics, evolution, cells, and population dy-namics will be taught while studying the human body. All body systems (including sexual reproduction) will be dis-cussed with an emphasis on structure and function.

History Department AMERICAN DEMOCRACY - 0.5 credit Content: Required for graduation. This course exam-ines how the United States is governed at the local, state, and national levels. There is a special emphasis on the U.S. Constitution and how the three branches of govern-ment work. U.S. HISTORY - Part 1 - 0.5 credit U.S. HISTORY - Part 2 - 0.5 credit Content: Required for graduation. This course is a study of United States history from World War I to the pre-sent. Emphasis is placed on relating the significance and importance of major events, movements, and leaders. WORLD HISTORY - Part 1 - 0.5 credit WORLD HISTORY - Part 2 - 0.5 credit Content: Required for graduation. World History is a survey course that examines themes, movements, people, and events that have shaped the modern world. This class covers concepts early man to the twentieth century.

Physical Education Department GENERAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION - 0.5 credit Grades: 10 - 12 Note: Students shall provide their own Physical Edu-cation attire, including a swimsuit, and students must use a padlock, which can be purchased at BMHS. Content: Emphasis is placed on fitness and refine-ment of skills developed in previous years of Physical Edu-cation courses. A wide range of individual, dual, and team activities, including a swim unit, will be offered. Lifetime fitness and activities will be emphasized. HEALTH - 0.5 credit Grades: 10 - 12 Content: Required for graduation. This class concen-trates on current health issues within the following con-cepts: risk, wellness, skill building, positive practices and community. The different threads incorporated in the pro-gram include accident prevention and safety, community health, consumerism, environment, physiology, hygiene, human growth & development, mental and emotional health, prevention and control of diseases, substance use/abuse, nutrition and personal health. The focus is on what enhances wellness and how to achieve and maintain health and wellness.

Business Department PERSONAL FINANCE - 0.5 credit Grades: 11-12 Content: Required for graduation. A working knowledge of personal finances is essential for all citizens. This course studies practical mathematics used in daily life. Important topics covered in this course include the following: consumer credit; stock market investing; per-sonal financial planning & budgeting; comparison of wages and salaries; personal banking (traditional and online); buying, maintaining, financing and insuring a home/apartment and/or care; taxes; and more. A simple four–function calculator is required.

Initial Credit Courses Physical Education Department Note: Students shall provide their own Physical Edu-cation attire, including a swimsuit if needed, and students must use a padlock, which must be purchased from BMHS. PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9 - 0.5 credit Grade: 9 Content: The course concentrates on improving car-diovascular fitness as well as introducing the student to a wide variety of physical activities. Individual, dual, and team activities are offered with lifetime sports being em-phasized. A swimming unit is required. This course can count towards the required 1.5 Physical Education credits needed for graduation. GENERAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION - 0.5 credit Grades: 10, 11, 12 Content: Emphasis is placed on fitness and refine-ment of skills developed in previous years of Physical Edu-cation courses. A wide range of individual, dual, and team activities, including a swim unit, will be offered. Lifetime fitness and activities will be emphasized. STRENGTH & CONDITIONING - 0.5 credit Grade: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Physical Education 9 or General Physical Education. Content: This course is open to any student who is interested in gaining a stronger sense of how to train their bodies and minds to face physical challenges. This course will focus on how to reach and maintain top physical condi-tion. Daily cardio and strength training through a variety of avenues (which includes the pool, cardio and strength centers, gyms, the outdoors, equipment and everyday items…) will be the norm. There will also be research and “active” homework. A HIGH AMOUNT OF INTENSE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS TO BE EXPECTED.

Art Department 2-D ART - 0.5 credit Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Content: An introductory art & design course that is a prerequisite course for Drawing, Painting, Printmaking & Intro to Graphics. Students will explore 2-dimensional art & design problems through drawing, painting, printmaking, collage & computer art. Creativity, craftsmanship, and the use of the Elements of Art & Principles of Design are em-phasized.

3-D ART - 0.5 credit Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Content: In this beginners course, students will learn basic 3-Dimensional building techniques in a variety of materials such as wire, clay, paper mache and cardboard to prepare them for advanced courses in sculpture, ceram-ics (clay) metals and glass crafts. Creativity and good craftsmanship are emphasized. 2-D art is not a prerequi-site.

Family & Consumer Science Department HEALTH CAREERS AND OCCUPATIONS - 0.5 credit Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Content: Students will investigate the more than 200 career opportunities in the health field, one of the fastest growing occupational areas. The course will study the requirements and training for each career in the following areas: Consumer Health, Community Health, Environ-mental Health, Accident Prevention, Mental/Emotional Health, and Health Related issues. Note: Students who plan to enroll in the Health youth Apprenticeship program should take this as sophomores. Project materials: $5.00

FOOD AND CULTURES - 0.5 credit Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Content: Students interested in the study of foods around the world should sign up for this course. You will learn about your culture and the culture of others through food preparation in laboratory experiences, media presen-tations, and group activities. A willingness to try new and different foods is necessary. Project materials: $5.00

Performing Arts Department PERFORMING ARTS - 0.5 credit Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 Content: This course is a beginning acting course, emphasizing the preparation and interpretation of acting monologues and scenes. Class time will be spent per-forming and analyzing play scripts. Students will be re-quired to memorize dialogue in acting scenes and perform those scenes in front of the rest of the class.

Enrichment Courses (non-credit) Math Emphasis Grade: Incoming 9th graders Prerequisite: Recommended by 8th grade teacher and/or Math Interventionist. Content: This is not a self-selected class. Students will be placed in this class based on academic need. The tar-get audience for this course is primarily freshmen whose end of year 8

th grade MAPS math test score indicates defi-

ciencies in mathematics that would prevent success in Pre Algebra. Placement in this course will be made based on MAPS test scores and will be the decision of the 8th grade math teacher and /or the math Interventionist and high school administration. This course will address specific skills necessary for success in high school mathematics and will focus on providing students with the opportunity to learn the foundational skills. Fact fluency and basic num-ber sense will be incorporated throughout the summer. Speed / Agility 1 Grade: 9 Content: Participants will make significant improvements in speed, agility, quickness and conditioning. All activities at the training sessions are tied together, working to achieve total athletic development. Athletes from a wide variety of sports benefit from speed, agility and quickness development. Camp objectives include: Perfect sprinting mechanics , faster starts / reaction time, power develop-ment, core strength development, improved agility and change of direction, improved hand-eye coordination, im-proved explosiveness / jumping ability, improved balance and coordination , improved acceleration / 40yd perfor-mance, improved flexibility, improved conditioning, and injury prevention.

Must be trying out for athletics for 2019-2020 school year. Equipment needed: all purpose gym shoes, t-shirt/shorts, water or sports drink.

Speed / Agility 2 Grade: 10, 11, 12 Content: Participants will make significant improvements in speed, agility, quickness and conditioning. All activities at the training sessions are tied together, working to achieve total athletic development. Athletes from a wide variety of sports benefit from speed, agility and quickness development. Camp objectives include: Strength and func-tional strength gains, improved explosiveness / jumping ability, improved agility / change of direction, core strength development, improved flexibility and range of motion, power development, acceleration / deceleration training, improved conditioning, and injury prevention. Emphasis of the program will be on increasing strength, speed and con-ditioning. All activities at the training camp are tied togeth-er, working to achieve total athletic development. Stu-dents / Athletes from a wide variety of sports benefit from speed, strength & conditioning development.
