FROM THE HEADMASTER

www.girton.vic.edu.au

At TEDxBendigo last Saturday, our irrepressible Junior School Head of Music, Mrs Laura Dussuljee, convinced the audience that if we are prepared to celebrate youth, then surely, we should

be prepared to celebrate those who are young at heart. With this kind of pragmatic logic and staunch loyalty to her proud senior-citizens choir, it comes as no surprise that the annual Forever Young concert at Ulumburra Theatre was such a success.

Singing to an audience of more than 750 people, and with a special guest appearance by much-loved 60’s rocker, Normie Rowe, the concert was a real tribute to all that is possible when compassion and inclusion are the main aims.

The Girton Senior String Orchestra and Rock Band “Standing Room Only” accompanied the choir as they performed an all-Australian repertoire of songs. Their musical ability was abundantly clear but their very participation, particularly in what is a truly community based forum, is commended.

TEDx events are well known for featuring high calibre speakers, but it was our student Audio Visual and Technical Team who really stitched the day together in a seamless show of theatre tech prowess. The technical running sheet for the day was a kaleidoscope of coloured chaos which the students navigated with a level of competence usually reserved for professional performances. Meanwhile, the TEDxBendigo Student Committee introduced speakers on the day and made sure logistics, from catering to entertainment, were soundly in hand. Well done to all.

The VCE Style and Composition class had their works performed this week at the Young Composer of the Year concert and my congratulations go to Jennifer O’Sullivan (11 Millward) for her composition of “Train Stop” which was awarded First Place by audience vote.

The Girton Dragons, our Year 12 Boys’ Basketball Team played a gallant Grand Final this week and although they did not win, they have had a fine season and have displayed an excellent example of what can be achieved when best efforts are applied week in and week out.

I would like to announce that we are offering an Arrowsmith class for 2016. Could I ask please, that any Girton parent who is interested in the Arrowsmith Programme be in touch with Mr John Pease via email [email protected] to register their interest.

I am delighted also to announce the appointment of two new Heads of House. Mr David Martin is already well settled in his new role as Head of Riley while Mrs Christine Phillips will take the helm of Jenkin House in 2016.

The Senior School Formal is tonight, a great way for our Year 10, 11 and 12 students to round off a Term of hard work. I know they will have a wonderful “enchanted” evening and I look forward to welcoming back all students, refreshed after the holidays, ready for a final Term of endeavour and growth.

I wish all parents, students and staff a very safe and happy holiday.

FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

As we draw to the end of another term, it is a good opportunity to reflect on the successes and challenges we face. The students should be very proud of their achievements across the term,

from Ensemble Performances to Sporting Achievements. Our most recent success the Junior School Art Exhibition and Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day. The event commenced with the Opening of the Junior School Art Exhibition on Thursday 10th September. The work displayed at the Art Exhibition never ceases to amaze parents, staff and the students themselves. The theme for this year was ‘Creatures’: with artwork displaying elephants, birds, monsters, bugs on flowers and, of course, the ever popular skateboards. The talent of the students under the watchful eyes of Mrs James and Mrs Allan delighted all our guests at the opening and throughout the day on the Friday. A huge thank you is extended to all the parents who assist with the Artshow, from framing work to hanging birdcages. The support of parents is what makes this event such a great achievement for all. Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day was well attended and the students did themselves and school proud with their talented musical performances. Thank you again to all the parents who helped out throughout the day, ensuring urns were hot with tea and coffee and lunch was served on time. Thank you also to the businesses that support our annual event – BMP for the invitations, Twenty 2 for providing lunch, Country Cakes for providing morning tea, The Complete Garden for props in the artshow and Kate Monotti Photography, who not only take all the wonderful ‘Friendship Photos’ that are available to purchase but who also comes along on the day to take those much loved photos with special guests.

Term Three Progress Reports for your child are now also available online for viewing. As with the two major reports sent out at the end of each semester, the Term Report is a factual and direct account of student performance to date. It is written and sent to the parents for your information. Whether or not you choose to share this information with your child is a matter for you.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing all our students return well refreshed in Term Four.

On Friday the 11th September Junior School Football Training came to an end with our annual Staff vs. Students match.

This game was played in great spirit with the skill and talents of the Staff team being matched by the tenacity and sheer numbers of students. For the fifth year in a row, the students were victorious, this time by one point just as the final siren sounded, much to the delight of the students.

With an enrolment of 63 students, this co-curriculum activity continues to grow in Junior School through our emphasis on fun,

participation and skill development. We sincerely thank all students, girls and boys, who were involved in Junior School Football in 2016 and particularly thank our senior leaders in Dale Baker (11 Jenkin), Haydn Musgrove (11 Millward), Peter Shearman (7 Jenkin) and Max Beever (8 Frew).

Running alongside Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day is the annual Book Fair. Students enjoyed perusing the displays and making wish lists in the weeks leading up to the Book Fair. The Junior School Library was a hub of excitement with students taking parents there before and after school all week to purchase those special books off their wish list. Thank you to all the parents who assisted in the Library across the week. Your generosity of time and assistance was very much appreciated. The Bookfair reached a record breaking total in sales which in turn will give the Junior School Library scholastic points to purchase new books.

On Sunday the 13th September, six Girton teams travelled to the Latrobe Bundoora campus in Melbourne to compete in the Victorian State Finals for Tournament of Minds. It was a successful day for our teams, as three won their category and two received honours.

The Senior Applied Technology team, Senior Social Science team and the Junior Maths Engineering team all achieved First Place in their division. The Senior Maths Engineering team and the Junior Applied Technology team were awarded Honours.

Unlike the Regional tournament, the students could not completely prepare for the State tournament. During the event, competitors were seated in a classroom with their team, their problem and some basic materials. They had three hours to solve the problem and produce a ten minute performance to show to a panel of judges and the other competing teams. During this time they were tested on their team work skills in an impromptu spontaneous challenge. Due to the limited time available to prepare, ‘Lock down’ tests students’ ability to work cohesively with others to form a functional team.

Three hours may seem like an immensely long period of time, but I’m sure all TOM members will agree that the three hours doesn’t seem very long at all. Compared to the weeks allowed to prepare for Regionals, the State Finals feel like a completely different experience.

The three winning Girton teams will now have the amazing opportunity to compete at a national level at the Australasian National Finals. They will travel to Sydney to represent Victoria in their categories on Thursday 15th October. This competition will emulate the State competition with a lockdown and spontaneous challenge.

The 2015 State Competition was a wonderful day. Girton students had the opportunity to watch a variety of different performances from their categories and gain experience from watching other schools perform. Thanks to the endless effort and dedication of the Girton facilitators, the Girton TOM teams were able to perform to the best of their ability.

Saturday’s TEDxBendigo event left the audience in no doubt that young people are worthy of protection, encouragement and celebration.

The internationally licensed conference featured 9 prominent speakers who unleashed their ideas about youth to inspire and inform the Bendigo community and beyond.

Mr Matthew Maruff, who hosted the day, said that the event was a huge success and anyone with an interest in the welfare and influence of young people in our community should view the 9 talks online in the coming weeks.

“TEDx is a great concept, allowing people to share ideas internationally through the hosting of local events that are uploaded to the TED website.

“The talks from our 9 speakers will be on the TED website soon, helping to promote conversations that genuinely matter on a world-wide stage.

“We heard a fascinating range of views on the topic of “Celebrating Youth”. From singer and composer, Adam Lyon, whose mantra to youth is BTFO (Bother To Find Out), through to nationally acclaimed Psychologist, Shona Innes, who talked about what young people need when their mental health becomes shaky.

“Elly Hunter, the 19 year old Director of Project Outward, spoke flawlessly for 15 minutes with no notes, leaving people with a fresh understanding of young people’s strengths and capabilities, inspiring them to step out and chase their dreams.

“We had an entertaining and highly engaging address from Laura Dusseljee, Founder and Director of the Forever Young Community Choir, who argued that if we are going to celebrate youth, then surely the young at heart also deserve celebration.

“The show concluded with an incredible break-dance demonstration, preceded by a very moving talk from Tom Sanderson, who turned his life around from a teenage “junkie” to a devoted husband, father and mentor. He talked about how his creative outlet ultimately saved him from a destructive and toxic lifestyle,” said Mr Maruff.

The 9 TEDx talks from the 2015 TEDxBendigo event will be available on the TED website in coming weeks.

HISTORY ROADSHOW

On Wednesday September 9th, Girton Grammar School was greatly privileged to host the History Roadshow.

The day was a great success with students from regional schools in attendance.

Years 10, 11 and 12 History students were treated to discussions on where careers in History could lead them, followed by ‘master classes’ in three of the VCE History courses. Dr Charles Fahey from Latrobe University conducted 2 classes on Australian History and Professor Joe Siracusa from RMIT brought 20th Century History to life. The Assistant Chief Assessor for Revolutions History gave the students many helpful insights into the examination process.

The rich content of the lectures was deeply beneficial to all the students and staff who were in attendance. The obviously extensive knowledge and experience of the presenters and the myriad of amusing and enlightening anecdotes kept the audience interested and amused throughout.

I would like to make special thanks on behalf of the students to Ms Terrie Dempster for her hard work in bringing this event to Girton and allowing it to function so smoothly.

On Monday August 31st three groups of Year 9 students left Bendigo at 7.30am to travel to Melbourne. The “City Challenge” excursion links directly to the Year 9 REPD programme, in particular, the Youth Homelessness Challenge.

Students attended three activities - a session on Youth Homelessness at the Salvation Army Centre, a Street Art Tour and a Street Art Workshop at Blender Studios. It was fabulous to see our budding artists create their own street art canvases, with a winning artist selected from each class.

These artworks will be on display during the Homelessness Challenge Expo students will be running during lunchtime on Monday October 19th. Students will be raising funds and awareness of the Youth Homelessness issue in our region and actively working towards real change through education and empowerment of young people.

Stay tuned for more news about this exciting venture next term...

YEAR NINE EXCURSION ‘CITY CHALLENGE’RE

PDMelbourne come to life. After lunch we walked to the Salvation Army for a talk on homelessness. I found it quite shocking how many people of all ages don’t have a safe place to call home. I cannot imagine how difficult life must be for them. In a way, it made me rethink what I have taken for granted in my life, such as warm meals every night, sleeping inside, a warm bed, and even just having a place to call home.

As part of the Salvation Army talk, were given a tour of some of the spots where they have found and helped homeless people in the past. I found it so heartbreaking seeing the horrid conditions in which

they were forced to live. After the tour we headed back to the street art studios for a chance to do our own canvas. I loved how we got to create our own mini masterpieces, they even allowed us to use some of their stencils. If I had the chance, I would do this day again and again and again. I have gained so much knowledge and appreciation for what I have from this day.

Milly Ellis (9M)

On Monday 31st August 2015, 9M,9H and 9V embarked on an excursion to the inner city streets of Melbourne. The students went on a tour of the iconic alleys of our State

capital, viewing the eccentric street art and graffiti. They later mustered their newfound knowledge, and used it to create their very own street art. But the fun didn’t stop there. The classes received an in-depth, insight into the reality of homelessness. They were taken on a confronting journey of the homeless gathering spaces. This, accompanied by the statistics, gave us a strong awareness of what’s happening in the hidden parts of our society. Overall, it was an enlightening experience that shall be one to remember.

Student Reflections:

On the 31st of August my class went down to Melbourne for a REPD excursion.

When we arrived we ventured down to Federation Square, where we met James, who kindly took us for a two hour Street Art tour. I found it incredible looking at all the beautiful artwork hidden in those alley ways. Next, he took us back to Blender studio where we met some other street artists. It was amazing watching how they work on their masterpieces.

We stopped and had a short lunch break, it was lovely to sit back and watch the busy streets of

CITY2SURF

On the first Friday of August, about 67 Girton students in Years 8-12 travelled up to Sydney for the annual City 2 Surf fun run.

After a long 12 hour bus trip on Friday, the Saturday was well spent allowing the runners to explore and experience one of the most iconic cities in Australia.

On Sunday it was race day so we had an early start to make it to the race on time, getting up at around 6am. City 2 Surf is the largest fun run in the world and was the first

event many of the Girton runners have experienced, making it even more exciting and thrilling to encounter.

Approximately 80,000 people make it difficult to find a good place at the start line, yet the positive vibe from all of the other runners and the glorious weather meant it was hardly a problem! Although the 14km run is hilly and quite difficult at times, most runners were still able to enjoy the fun atmosphere and stunning scenery.

Matthew Heislers achieved an outstanding time of 50.54, breaking the Girton record previously held by Mr Munro. The next placing boys were Alexander Nielsen (54.31) and Alexander O’Shea (58.12).

Congratulations to the three fastest girls, Alex Liacos (1:05.31), Chloe Hobson (1:09.35) and Matilda Moore (1:13.08). Each year the times are getting more and more competitive.

Congratulations also to every

runner, especially those who completed the challenging course for the first time or who achieved a Personal Best time.

On behalf of all the students, we would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Lorincz, Mr Langley, Mrs Tunzi, Mrs Douglas, Mrs Showler, Mrs Peter, and all the parents who came on the trip. The commitment and effort you put into this co curricular activity is greatly appreciated.

This year the Girton Community Action Group (GCAG) embarked on a mission, to raise funds and awareness for RUOK Day. To do so, we held the third annual Student vs Staff Soccer Match on Monday September 7th.

Rain made the event difficult at first, but the teams battled on. Sausages and Spiders were available to purchase for those who had the persistence to wait in the rain. Split Decision gave the day a festive element by playing for everyone yet again, making the game entertaining to both the eyes and ears. Eventually the rain cleared and the game became a bit more pleasant to watch (and play!). For the first time, Team Student defeated Team Staff - a momentous occasion and well worth celebrating, as Staff could no longer claim an unchallenged winning streak.

Three days later, on the official RUOK Day (September 10th), volunteers from GCAG handed out

Funds raised from the BBQ and Spiders will be donated to the campaign to raise the Aboriginal Flag on the Senior School Campus. With almost $400 being raised towards this, the day has provided the school with a big step towards acknowledging formally our indigenous history. Not only was the day an opportunity to take a stand against mental illness and suicide, it was also a chance for students to contribute to a fairer, more educated Australia, one flag at a time. Our sincere thanks goes to all staff and students who supported the day and we look forward to celebrating RUOK Day in 2017.

lollipops, encouraging students to ask each other “are you okay?”. Handing out lollipops, while having a conversation, introduced us to so many people who we may never have spoken to otherwise and created a real sense of community.

RUOK Day is all about working together to raise awareness for suicide and mental illness. This day was a chance for everyone to ask, ‘are you okay?’ to show that they care and that they can help. It was also a time for people to thank those who were always there for them.

In the lead up to RUOK Day students became aware of facts such as:

• In a 12-month period, it is estimated that 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt, with an average of 2,320 people committing suicide every year

• For every suicidal death, it is estimated that as many as 30 people make an attempt.

• Recent data shows that almost twice as many people have died from suicide, than in road related deaths.

• Around 45 per cent of Australians will experience mental illness in their lifetime, while 20 per cent are affected every year.

FOREVER YOUNG CHOIR AND GIRTON STUDENTS ROCK WITH NORMIE ROWE

On Wednesday September 16, the Forever Young Rock Choir accompanied by Girton Students rocked the Ulumbarra Theatre with popular star from the sixties, Normie Rowe.

The Girton Grammar String Orchestra and the Girton Jazz Band provided a musical powerhouse for and all-Australian repertoire of songs including Beds are Burning, Down Under, Don’t Dream It’s Over, Solid Rock, My Happiness, To Love Somebody and Friday on My Mind.

The theme for this year’s concert was “Play”, taken from the choir’s motto, “Live Love Laugh Play Shine”.

The ‘Forever Young’ choir was established in 2011 by Mrs Laura Dusseljee, Head of Girton Grammar Junior School Music Department. It is a community choir made up of approximately 80 senior citizens, the youngest being 64 and oldest 94. The choir sings rock songs of all genres.

A near capacity crowd were treated to a fantastic night’s entertainment.

Just a reminder there is a change of uniform for Term Four—back to summer! A few items which need review prior to the start of Term Four are:

• Ensure the dresses of the ladies are at the correct length (no more than two centimetres above the ground when kneeling is a good rule of thumb)

• Only Girton white socks for the ladies and Girton blue socks for the gents.

• Hats will need to be worn at all times when at Recess, Lunch and all outside activities (Sun Smart)

• Shoes need to be serviceable and polished please. Some may even need to be replaced, given the condition of some I’ve seen

• Hair for ladies needs to be pulled back and completely out of the face; hair for gents cannot touch the top of the collar and must be out of the face, with no ponytails or knots permitted

Senior school parents were sent a letter on 14 September; please refer to this for more information.

As John Steinbeck, Nobel Laureate in Literature, wrote: “No man really knows about other human beings. The best he can do is to suppose that they are like himself.”

Getting to know another person, especially one from a different culture, can be exciting, challenging, and has its unique benefits. Department of Education-registered Southern Cross Cultural Exchange is providing a unique experience to help your children and family learn through bridging cultures, grow closer with one another, understand one another better and see the world in a new light.

International exchange students from France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Finland, Denmark and Sweden are arriving in Australia to live as a local with volunteer Australian families and attend a local secondary school. The students, aged 15 – 17, arrive from February 2016 for 3, 5, or 10 months and are fully insured, with their own pocket money. If you have a spare room or bed, and a place at the family table, why not be the “heart” of cultural exchange by becoming a volunteer host family?

Expand your world for the whole family – all without any air tickets. Call S.C.C.E. now on 1800 500 501 or email [email protected] or visit www.scce.com.au and ask for our incoming student profiles, choose the nationality you prefer, and start having fun matching up your hobbies and interests.

Capture the spirit of fun and friendship, and build your global cultural network. After all, it is different cultures that make the world go ‘round at the end of the day.
