Teacher Professional Learning – ‘Engagement Norms’
Our Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) Team spent last Wednesday, in our Professional Learning Meeting, modelling an EDI lesson whilst unpacking the ‘Engagement Norms’. Our parent helpers, who are assisting our students, may notice the changes happening in our classroom with much of our work now being completed on mini whiteboards. Using whiteboards, students are happy to attempt more challenging tasks as errors are so easily erased and fixed. Using whiteboards in classrooms ensures that students receive individual feedback at their point of need.

NAPLAN Online School Readiness Test This term from 14 August to 22 September schools across NSW will be participating in the NAPLAN Online school readiness test. The school readiness test is a ‘practice run’ designed to help schools assess their technical and administrative readiness for the transition to NAPLAN Online.
Eleebana students in Years 3 and 5 will be participating in the readiness test between Monday 18 September and Friday 22 September 2017 (Week 10).
The readiness test will involve students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 sitting two, 40-minute assessments, a writing test and a combined numeracy/literacy test. (Year 3 students will not participate in the writing test). Student participation in the readiness test is an opportunity for them to become familiar with the NAPLAN Online test format. It is not an assessment of student ability and there will be no reporting of student results. It is important to note that participation in the school readiness test has no effect on students’ NAPLAN results from the paper-based tests students sat in May.
For more information, visit the department’s NAPLAN Online website: https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-andlearning/student-assessment/naplan-online

We are embracing the book week theme ‘Escape to Everywhere’ by asking staff and students to dress up as a character or place from a children’s book that they have ‘escaped’ into. Please come along to witness our fabulous students dressed up as their favourite book characters. Students from K-2 will be parading and showing off their amazing costumes. Students in 3-6 will be showing off their costumes in a seated position as part of the audience. Prizes for dressing up will be handed out for students and teachers who have gone to the trouble of dressing up. The $15 book fair vouchers will also be handed out for the winning Book Fair poster entries. Please remember that you do not have to spend a lot of money to buy costumes. There are many creative ideas online for costumes that can be easily made. Thursday - Book Fair open before school 8:00am-8:50am Book Fair Poster Competition We are running a competition for students to design a poster promoting our book fair. There will be four winners, one from each stage, each receiving a $15 voucher to use at our book fair in Week 7. Poster requirements: * A3 size (or large cardboard) * You can use materials of your choosing * Design a poster to promote our book fair which will operate from Tuesday 29 August - Thursday 31 August in Week 7. See above for book fair opening hours, which you could add to your poster. Your aim is to appeal to students, making them desperate to buy books at the fair. Some of the reasons why students should attend the book fair are:
A portion of all money spent at the book fair is goes to our school library

Nature Walk
Nature walk is offered to the students as a Friday afternoon sport choice. A team of twenty students walks
down to the foreshore every week and takes in the beauty of the area. Each alternate week we also take
along drawing materials and sketch scenery. The students then have the opportunity to paint the
scenery with water colours.

talk to the children on dog safety and caring for pets. We are also collecting donations of pet food, blankets,
toys, leashes etc to donate to Dog Rescue Newcastle.
There are a large number of items in our lost property bin. Please check this for any hats, jumpers or drink
bottles that may be missing from your home.
A big thank you to all of our families who are using the My Family Lounge App to notify us of children’s
absences. If you are cancelling care 2 weeks in advance to not be charged please send this through as an
email. You can also notify us of absences via text message or voice mail. Please remember that it is important
to let us know if your children will not be attending in the afternoon as it takes time to call families and look
for children and the safety of your children is our greatest concern. We appreciate your help with this.
The next Committee Meeting will be held on 29 August 2017 at 6:30pm in the OOSH Room and all families
are welcome to attend this meeting.
For enquiries or further information about the OOSH please phone our Coordinator Kate on
0400 880011 or visit us between 7-9am or 2:30-3pm (please avoid after 3:00pm as this is our busiest time of
the day and our priority is taking care of the children).
P&C NEWS Eleebana P&C meeting tonight 6:30pm in the staff room Please come along for the meeting to discuss and vote on ideas for our revamped spring fair, updates from our principal on our uniform, band payments, canteen purchases and more. We would love your input into our community and school, so please come along and discuss these with us. See you there tonight! Spring Fair Planning is underway for the revamped Eleebana Public School Spring Fair to be held on the 28 October this
year.
This year some exciting changes will be implemented and some fantastic new products, stalls and displays
will be held on the day.
“Our school needs your help”!! It is the parent’s support that makes our school so great. If you can help in
any way ie. coordinate a stall, volunteer for an hour on the day, perhaps a business donation or if you have a
special talent to offer, it could see our Spring Fair exceed expectations.
All profits generated from the day go back into our school to help our children. A certificate of Appreciation
Awards ceremony will be held at the school after the event, whereupon your
child will collect and return the certificate to you as thanks for your help.
To be involved or for any questions please call
Kristina Bircsak on 0419342637.
Thank you
