HOMEWORK POLICYDeLand High School believes homework should be assigned in all courses where school learning experiences can

be effectively and practically continued beyond the classroom. Teachers will assign homework which will be meaningful and related to classroom learning activities. Homework shall be evaluated, returned to the student, and in some cases, included as part of the student’s academic grade. A primary concern in our pursuit of excellence is the involvement of the family in student achievement. Homework provides an avenue for such involvement.

MAKE-UP WORKStudents are given one day to make up class work and homework for each day they were absent (up to a

maximum of 10 days). Students obtain makeup work in the following manner: On the day they return to class, students must bring a parent note excusing their absence. The note must be turned in to the guidance office excuse note box. Afterwards, absences will be marked excused in Gradebook. Students will be required to speak to their teachers directly to acquire all make-up work. Once completed, all make-up work should be returned to the appropriate teacher.

Parents of students who will be out of school for over 3 days due to illness or family emergency should consider asking for work which may be completed at home prior to their return. To request work during times of illness or family emergency, call 822-6909. If approved, advanced work will be requested of the teachers. The collection of this work takes 48 hours to complete and may be picked up in the Main Office. All other make-up work will have to be completed when the student returns.

BYOT InformationWhat is BYOT in Volusia County Schools?

The Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program allows students in participating schools and classrooms to use their own devices (laptops, smart phones, tablets, etc.) to connect to the district’s BYOT network. Teachers facilitate the use of student devices by integrating Web 2.0 tools, Internet research, and applications to engage students in the curriculum content and collaboration with peers. The BYOT program provides students with access to their personal technology resources to support teachers and administrators as they prepare students to develop real-world, 21st-century skills

For more information on BYOT go to http://myvolusiaschools.org/learn-tech/Pages/BYOT.aspx

Keys to Academic Success

The easiest way to be successful in high school is to be proactive. You, the student, are expected to monitor your grades in gradebook and make up missing assignments. If an assignment is missing or there is a low grade, it is the student’s responsibility to see what can be done to bring grades up. Ask teachers for make-up work when there are absences, before or after, it doesn’t matter as long as a student is proactive about it.

Grades matter in ninth grade like they do in twelfth grade. They contribute to a student’s GPA for graduation. A 2.0 GPA is required for graduation, this needs to be worked towards all four years. Please keep this in mind throughout your year.
