THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC
The five-story Presser Music Building is one of the finestmusic
facilities of any small college. It includes a
240-seatacoustically-superior recital hall, large and small
rehearsalrooms, modern computer and piano laboratories, a
musiceducation resource center, ensemble libraries and
offices,practice rooms (many with grand pianos), teaching
studios,classrooms, seminar rooms, and a student lounge.
Besides a wide variety of instrumental and vocalperformance
ensembles, the department alsooffers private instruction and a
Bachelor ofArts degree program in Music or MusicEducation, as well
as a minor in Music.
We also have available a variety of specialand unique
scholarship funds for musicmajors, allowing students to purchase
musicscores, to pursue international study, and toattend special
workshops, conferences, andprofessional performances in the
region.

WIND ENSEMBLEThe Wind Ensemble is an instrumental group that
performs standardsymphonic wind literature by composers like Gustav
Holst and PercyGrainger, but also a significant number of
contemporary works byliving composers like Steven Bryant and John
Mackey. This ensembleprovides students a chance to enhance their
music appreciation andindividual instrumental skills through
performance. Open to all BereaCollege students regardless of major,
membership is gained uponcompletion of a successful audition. This
ensemble rehearses twiceweekly and performs two to three concerts a
semester. Formal concertattire is provided for all members.

AUDITIONS
Auditions for both ensembles take place before the fallsemester,
although some auditions may be heard at thebeginning of the spring
semester as needed. Students areencouraged to bring a prepared solo
or etude, but this isnot required. All students will be asked to
sight-read andpossibly play some basic scales. Students who do not
owntheir own instrument will be provided one at the auditionand
then will have the option to use one during thesemester for a
nominal fee. Information concerningauditions will be sent out by
Berea email in early Augustand will be publicized on posters
throughout campus.

JAZZ ENSEMBLEThe Jazz Ensemble is a traditional Big Band that
performs jazzliterature of all 20th century styles including swing,
blues, funk, Latin,and jazz-rock fusion. This select group provides
students a vehicle forjazz appreciation and continued growth as an
instrumentalist throughperformance. The art of improvisation is an
important element of thejazz idiom and therefor part of the
curriculum for this ensemble. JazzEnsemble rehearses twice weekly,
performs two to three concerts asemester and is open to all Berea
College students, regardless ofmajor. Membership is gained by
completion of a successful audition.Formal concert attire is
provided for all members.

BEREA COLLEGE
Founded in 1855 by Rev. John G. Fee, Berea College isdistinctive
among post-secondary institutions for providing atuition free
undergraduate education to students and forhaving been the first
college in the Southern United States tobe coeducational and
racially integrated. The college currentlyenrolls over 1600
students and offers Bachelor’s degrees in 32majors. It has a
full-participation work-study program in whichstudents are required
to work at least 10 hours per week incampus and service jobs in
over 130 departments. Berea’sprimary service region is Southern
Appalachia, but studentscome from 43 states in the United States
and over 60 othercountries, with approximately one of every three
studentsidentifying as a member of an ethnic minority or
aninternational community.

PRIVATE LESSONSWhether you have limited skills on your
instrument or youare an all-state participant, applied lessons are
a great wayto improve your individual musicianship. Like every
class atBerea, lessons are provided for free! Applied lessons canbe
taken for 1/4 credit (one half-hour lesson per week) or1/2 credit
(one 60 minute lesson per week). For moreinformation about
