As part of the Modernization process of the Public Sector, El Salvador with assistance of the Inter- American Development Bank through the PRODEV program, which has developed a budget for results in the Department of Education (MINED for its capital letters in spanish). The Department of Education, is the institution which regulates and standardizes public and private education of El Salvador. Its purpose is to extend the elementary, middle and high schooling coverage and seeks to improve educational quality and effectiveness, for which in 2007 will be developing a budget of more than US $500,0 millions dollars. This effort has been leaded by the Presidential Technical Secretary Office of the Republic of El Salvador (Secretaria Tecnica de la Presidencia de la Republica), as part of a wide strengthening program of public matter based on the subject Measures for Results. OVERVIEW PILOT PROJECT: BUDGET FOR RESULTS To improve the allignment between the annual budget, with the main goals and expected results of the Education Department proceedings in the pilot project, has been develop the following: Defining of a concept model of Budget for Results which allows to link the objectives of the Government Plan with the Budget. Identifying the stablished results by the Education Department (MINED) in its sectorial plans verifying its allignment with the goverment´s plan , in terms of benefits for the citizens. Identifying the products ( goods and services) which will allow the fulfilment of the results stablished by the Education Department (MINED), for the assigning of budget resourses. RESULTS The Education Department counts with a budget for results for the year 2007, and for its execution its developing improvements in the interinstitutional communication between the planning, execution and financial control units, which it allows to anticipate better results in of this institutions management. NEXT STAGES The experience developed in the Education Department is being transfered rapidly to the rest of the government-s institutions and its expected that by the year 2008 at least an 80 % of the National Budget of the Public Sector will be elaborated under the concept of the Budget for Results. The Department of Education, is the institution which regulates and standardizes public and privateeducation of El Salvador.
