DESCRIPTION
Exhibition catalogue for EL PUNTO 2011, a contemporary art practicum for young artists in Syracuse, NY. Printed in limited edition, this 28-page bilingual publication (English/Spanish) documents the 2011 project ‘Your Words Today / Tus palabras de hoy’, a visual and verbal exploration that culminates in a gallery-wide mural collage at The Point of Contact Gallery (May 6 to June 23, 2011). EL PUNTO is a Point of Contact program sponsored in part by Syracuse University’s College of Arts & Sciences and University College, designed and presented by Point of Contact in collaboration with the Spanish Action League of Central New York and La Casita Cultural Center, as well as local artists Oscar Garcés, José Miguel Hernández, and poet Michael Burkard.

Today we look at words, creator words, angel words, healing words, misunderstood words, harsh ones
and often thoughtless words we can’t unsay. But how we live with them, learn from them and use
them in our lives, is what matters to us now. We may find grace in exploring and feeling the power of
words, unafraid, if we transform them into art. The walls of The Point of Contact Gallery are filled with
verse and queries and dreams of sharks shooting out from deep blue sea to outer space, engaging in
fierce combat with fire breathing dragons and orange man-eating tigers… and then there are dreams
of young people finding themselves in this world; dreams of the future.
EL PUNTO is a program for young artists from our Syracuse community, designed by Point of Contact
with these fundamental goals:

We are very pleased to see these goals fulfilled as we proudly present the harvest of this project and
the stirring talent of our youth. A group of 21 artists between the ages of 9 and 16 worked under the
direction of artists Oscar Garcés, José Miguel Hernández, and poet Michael Burkard, assisted by 13
Syracuse University students from the Spanish Program who helped facilitate the workshops and
document the entire project through writing, photography and video.
The theme of this pilot project at EL PUNTO is centered largely on words, Your Words Today, which
is also the theme of a national campaign by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.
Through this collective project we share a space, a point of contact where our worlds connect. That
is precisely the point: EL PUNTO. Inside this space we explore and exchange thoughts and dreams,
and maybe some of our nightmares, fears, and heartbreaks…everyday things that are part of life at
every age, in every home, yours and mine. We thank the love that pours into this project.

Hoy fijamos nuestra atención en las palabras; palabras creadoras, palabras ángeles, palabras
sanadoras, palabras malentendidas, duras y a veces las que decimos sin pensar, palabras que no
podemos desdecir. Pero cómo vivimos con ellas, aprendemos de ellas y cómo las usamos, es lo
que importa ahora. Tal vez encontremos la gracia en explorar y sentir el poder de las palabras, sin
miedo, si las transformamos en un arte. Las paredes de la galería Punto de Contacto están repletas
de verso, interrogantes y sueños de tiburones que se disparan desde la profundidad del mar azul
hacia el espacio, enfrentándose en fiero combate con dragones lanzallamas y tigres de Bengala
anaranjados… y entonces, hay sueños de jóvenes encontrándose a sí mismos en el mundo; sueños
de un futuro.
EL PUNTO es un programa para jóvenes artistas de nuestra comunidad de Syracuse, diseñado por
Punto de Contacto con unas metas fundamentales:
el concepto y el proceso artístico de todo proyecto realizado por Punto de Contacto, que es

Nos llena de alegría ver las metas cumplidas al presentar la cosecha de este proyecto y el talento
inquieto de nuestra juventud. El grupo de 21 artistas entre las edades de 9 a 16 trabajó bajo la

Dentro de este espacio exploramos e intercambiamos ideas y sueños, y quizás algunas pesadillas, miedos y tristezas…cosas de todos los días que son parte de la vida a cualquier edad, en cualquier

¡LA CASITA DICE GRACIAS A TUS PALABRAS DE HOY!La misión del Centro Cultural La Casita es servir como up puente artístico, cultural, y educativo entre
Syracuse University y las comunidades de la ciudad y de Central New York. Estamos contentos de
que el programa interdisciplinario Tus palabras de hoy ha reunido los jóvenes latinos de la comunidad
urbana del West Side con estudiantes, personal, y facultad de Syracuse University en la exploración
del arte y el teatro contemporáneo.
Los sábados por la tarde, en un ambiente informal, participantes de diversas edades y trasfondos
examinaron el poder perdurable de las palabras en nuestras vidas; compartieron sus descubrimientos
mediante la creación de una pieza grupal de arte visual y verbal, inspirada en modelos contemporáneos.
Esta hermosa sinergía, el compartir de ideas y expresiones, ha construido estrechas relaciones entre
individuos que quizás no hubiesen tenido la oportunidad interactuar alrededor un proyecto con un
propósito artístico de impacto entre las comunidades locales y universitarias.
La Casita agradece a todos los participantes por su gran trabajo y dedicación. Esta colaboración con
Point of Contact Gallery, y La Liga de Acción Hispana nos ha permitido avanzar un paso más en nuestra
misión de unir la comunidad latina de Syracuse y la universidad para explorar nuestra diversidad de
culturas. Esta iniciativa continuará a través del año en el nuevo hogar del Centro Cultural La Casita
que pronto abrirá al público en la calle Otisco #109 del la vecindad del Near Westside de Syracuse, NY.

LA CASITA SAYS THANK YOU TO YOUR WORDS TODAY!La Casita Cultural Center’s mission is to serve as an artistic, cultural, and educational bridge between
Syracuse University and the communities of Syracuse and Central New York. We are pleased that
the interdisciplinary program Tus palabras de hoy/ Your Words Today has brought together Latino
youth from our urban community in the West Side as well as S.U. students, staff, and faculty in the
exploration of contemporary art and theater.
In an informal setting on Saturday afternoons, participants of different ages and backgrounds examined
the long-lasting power of words in our lives; shared their discoveries with others by creating a collective
piece of visual and verbal art, inspired by contemporary models. This beautiful synergy, the sharing
of ideas and experiences, has built meaningful relationships between individuals who might not have
had the opportunity to interact around a project with an artistic purpose, impacting local and university
communities alike.
La Casita thanks all participants for their hard work and dedication. This collaboration with The Point
of Contact Gallery and the Spanish Action League has allowed us to advance one step further in our
mission of bringing together the Syracuse Hispanic community and Syracuse University to explore our
cultural diversity. This endeavor will continue throughout the year at La Casita Cultural Center’s new
home, soon to open at 109 Otisco St., in the Near Westside neighborhood of Syracuse, NY. Thank you

The Book of Questions by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda was at the center of one Saturday workshop at
EL PUNTO, presented by a poet, Michael Burkard, author of nine poetry collections and Professor
of the Creative Writing Program at Syracuse University. He generously shared with our young poets
his time and Neruda’s questions, questions that have no answers but, as Burkard said, “call out for
wonderment, continual wonderment.”
The wonderment we allow ourselves to experience creates its own “links” – not unlike our computer, not unlike music, or the music of even mathematical theory (about which I know nothing, but at times I glance in wonderment). Young people get accustomed to having to come up with answers and having to know. I found it very interesting to use Neruda’s questions as triggers for other questions, as triggers for writing or thought, or even the possible and impossible answers offered by my young audience one afternoon. I, as a writer, will play with some of these questions that would not have even occurred to me before this gathering at Point of Contact. The authors of the following questions and poems are those who joined the group that day, and I would like to think Neruda too, that Neruda’s spirit was with us as we read him aloud, as each one listened, or answered, or formed his or her own questions:
Why does God have to be an image?
How old is God?
Is “gold” closer to God or to old?
If Luis is an actor, can’t a boulder become a stone?
Will Justin’s great hat say hello to me in June?Will Justin’s great hat meet the president of Chile?
Can a drawing in Syracuse receive a color from Santiago?
Is the hidden spider listening to us, or searching for cloves?
Will the shadow in the play of sunlight resemble Che’s face?Will he not return to us in patience and sunlight?
Does C’s yellow blouse remain yellow throughout the night?Does the blouse dream of being a half-note, or a full-note?
These are simply beginnings. Now that they are written, imaginative or “real” answers may easily occur too. But questions can remain simply that, and in that simplicity begin a journey which any
can partake in.

El libro de las preguntas del poeta chileno Pablo Neruda fue la pieza central del taller un sábado
en EL PUNTO, presentado por el poeta Michael Burkard, autor de nueve colecciones de poesía
y profesor del Programa de Escritura Creativa en Syracuse University. El poeta compartió
generosamente con nuestros jóvenes su tiempo y las preguntas de Neruda, preguntas sin respuesta
que, como dijo, “llaman al asombro y a la pregunta continua.”
El asombro que nos permitimos experimentar crea sus propios “enlaces” – como nuestra computadora, como la música, o la música incluso en la teoría matemática (de la cual no sé nada, pero a veces ojeo y me asombro). Los jóvenes se acostumbran a tener que producir respuestas, y a tener que saber. Encuentro interesantes, usando los poemas de Neruda, las preguntas como generadoras de otras preguntas, generadoras de escritura o pensamiento, incluso de las respuestas posibles e imposibles que ofrecía mi joven audiencia. Yo como escritor, seguiré jugando con algunas de estas preguntas que no se me hubiesen ni ocurrido antes de esta reunión en Punto de Contacto. Los autores de las siguientes preguntas son los integrantes del grupo ese día, y quisiera pensar que también estaba Neruda; que el espíritu de Neruda estaba con nosotros mientras lo leíamos en voz alta, mientras cada uno escuchaba, o contestaba, o formulaba sus propias preguntas:
¿Por qué Dios tiene que ser una imagen?
¿Cuán viejo es Dios?
Orar… ¿se acerca más a Dios o al oro?
Si Luis es actor, ¿no puede un guijarro hacerse piedra?
¿Me saludará en junio el gran sombrero de Justin?¿Conocerá el gran sombrero de Justin al presidente de Chile?
¿Puede un dibujo en Syracuse recibir un color de Santiago?
¿Nos escucha la araña escondida, o andará buscando clavos?
¿Se parecerá la sombra en el juego de luz solar a la cara del Che?¿Acaso no regresará él con paciencia y luz solar?
¿Será amarilla la blusa amarilla de C a través de toda la noche?¿Sueña la blusa con ser medio tono, o tono completo?
Estos son sólo comienzos. Ahora que están escritos, las respuestas imaginarias o “reales” podrían darse tembién. Pero las preguntas pueden quedarse así, simplemente, y en esa simpleza comenzar una travesía que cualquiera puede recorrer.

Visual art for artistic reasons, and then physical and emotional feelings for biological reasons, they
both have a common subject: the human body. Our bodies possess the genetic mark of human
values. And that is what was expressed, to my judgment, in this exceptional art project, Your Words Today. In the early spring we began to celebrate art through the words of our young artists that were
later installed on the walls of The Point of Contact Gallery; words and expressions of emotions and
feelings lived in our daily walk through life. The experience is undoubtedly the trajectory of a young
life, a path through our youth, and the artists involved in this marvelous magical world, have the
opportunity to explore all sorts of experiences adequate to the development of multiple perfections and
imperfections of our young talents and the world that surrounds them. I am proud to participate and I
thank everyone who brought this wonderful work to the Syracuse community.
El arte visual por razones artísticas, y los sentimientos físicos y emocionales por razones biológicas,
tienen un sujeto común: el cuerpo humano. Este posee en su conformación física la marca genética
de los valores humanos. Y eso es lo que se ha querido expresar a mi juicio, en este excepcional
taller de arte, Tus palabras de Hoy. A principios de esta primavera comenzamos a celebrar el arte
a través de las palabras de nuestros jóvenes artistas, palabras que se instalaron en las paredes de
la galería Punto de Contacto; palabras y expresiones de las emociones y sentimientos vividos en
su andar diario por la vida. La experiencia es indudablemente el trayecto de una vida joven, un
camino cuya travesía le da a nuestros jóvenes y a los artistas involucrados en este maravilloso mundo
mágico la oportunidad de experimentar toda clase de experiencias propias al desarrollo de múltiples
perfecciones e imperfecciones de nuestros jóvenes talentos y del mundo a su alrededor. Un orgullo
participar y agradecer a todos los que han traído esta maravillosa obra a la comunidad de Syracuse.

This work shows a great variety of inner expressions that emerge from the most profound artistic
subconscious. The mind in a state of creativity exercises its freedom to express through words,
drawings, and the use of basic materials, every-day things. The fundamental idea was to set free
those moments that have marked time for us, moments nailed to the walls of our every-day thoughts.
The will to create and to destroy; to express and to keep silent; to remember and to forget, all were
elements that shaped the body of this work. As an artist I appreciated the inward expansion of each
of the participants and how their thoughts evolved revealing the images that take over the wall.
Esta obra muestra una gran variedad de expresiones internas que vienen desde lo más profundo
del subconsciente artístico. La mente en un estado de creatividad que desempeña su libertad
de expresión mediante palabras, dibujos y uso de materiales básicos, cosas de todos los
días. La idea fundamental era desencadenar esos momentos que han marcado el tiempo para
nosotros, momentos clavados en las paredes de nuestros pensamientos cotidianos. El crear y
romper, el decir y callar, el grabar y olvidar, fueron los elementos que le dieron forma al cuerpo de
esta obra. Como artista pude apreciar el crecimiento interno de cada uno de los participantes y
como sus ideas evolucionaban revelando las imágenes que se apoderan de la pared.
