Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

You are not thinking as God does, but as human beings do.

Can you imagine the surprise for Peter when Jesus says “get behind me Satan”?

Surprises can be what a relationship with God will be. Just when we think we have it all figured out Surprise! How can we possibly not think as human beings, after all we were created by God with the ability to learn from our experiences. If we are not constantly nurturing and caring for our relationship with God, that is praying and listening constantly, than how can we not think like the creations that we are? Perhaps only people in monasteries, or priests can think like God. But the first reading tells us the prophets who were the mouthpieces of God were constantly defending their words. Today let us accept the mysteries of a God centered life. That in doing what is right and good everyday we will be thinking like God, because he is guiding our every action. Our thoughts may be “what will the neighbors think?” or “what if I look like a pious Polly?” These thoughts may be where Satan is trying to catch hold. So, hold on to what you know to be right. Reveal what is truly in your heart by your actions and words. Only in this way can we be Christ in the world.

Justo cuando pensamos que lo teníamos todo resuelto con ¡Sorpresa! ¿Cómo es posible que no podamos pensar como seres humanos? Después de todo, fuimos creados por Dios con la capacidad de aprender de nuestras experiencias. Si no estamos constantemente nutriendo y cuidando nuestra relación con Dios, eso es orar y escuchar constantemente, ¿cómo no podemos pensar como las creaciones que somos? Quizás solo las personas en los monasterios o sacerdotes puedan pensar como Dios. Pero la primera lectura nos dice que los profetas que fueron los portavoces de Dios defendían constantemente sus palabras. Hoy aceptemos los misterios de una vida centrada en Dios. Que al hacer lo que es correcto y bueno todos los días, estaremos pensando como Dios, porque él está guiando todas nuestras acciones. Nuestros pensamientos pueden ser “Cómo pensarán los demás” o “si parezco una persona piadosa.” Estos pensamientos pueden ser donde Satanás está tratando de atraparlos. Por lo tanto, aférrate a lo que sabes que es correcto. Revela lo que verdaderamente está en tu corazón con tus acciones y palabras. Solo de esta manera podemos ser Cristo en el mundo.

Andrew Kim Tae-gon was born on 21 August 1821, in Chungchong Province, Korea. His parents, being converts to Catholicism, were subject to persecution, to avoid which they moved to Kyonggi Province. At 15 years old, Kim Tae-gon was chosen by a visiting priest to be a seminarian, and was sent with two other seminarians to Macao. He arrived in 1873 and began his studies with the missionaries of the Far Eastern Procure of the Parish Foreign Mission Society. In 1842 Kim Tae-gon left Macao as an interpreter for a French admiral aboard a warship. When the admiral returned to France, Kim Tae-gon tried to return to his homeland through the strictly guarded norther frontier, but he failed. He was ordained a deacon in China in 1844 and managed to return to Korea the next year, arriving in Seoul early in 1845. He then led the French missionaries by sea to Shanghai, where Bishop Ferreol ordained him the first Korean priest in the Church’s 60-

year history in Korea. He returned to Korea with Bishop Ferreol, reaching Chungchong Province in October of the same year. In his home town and vicinity, he catechized the faithful, until Bishop Ferreol summoned him to Seoul. At the Bishop's command, he tried to introduce French missionaries from China into Korea, enlisting the aid of Chinese fishermen. For this, Father Kim Tae-gon was arrested and sent to the central prison in Seoul, where was charged as the ringleader of a heretical sect and traitor to his country. He was sentenced to death and was beheaded on 16 September 1846. He was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1925, and canonized by Pope John-Paul II on 6 May 1984.
