Executive SummaryHumboldt Park is one of seventy-seven community areas in the Chicago metropolitan area. Located near the northern west side of the city, this neighborhood is known for its largely Hispanic/Latino population. With an average median household income of $29, 65759, the community is affected by many social issues, including a very concerning health problem of obesity.

Obesity, which contributes to a variety of health illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and lower life expectancy, is a major public health concern for the neighborhood. Because Hispanic Americans are 1.2 times more likely to be obese than Non-Hispanic Whites, this health issue is more prevalent in this local community area. Factors such as lack of financial resources, access to fresh foods, connection to recreational areas including bike lanes, public parks, and fitness centers, and lower education levels in the community area of Humboldt Park all contribute to the high obesity rates.

To combat this community health concern, partners at N-Quartic, an urban planning firm in Northeastern Illinois have taken on this project. The result is a state of the art community wellness center. As partners at N-Quartic, we have completed extensive community site visits to observe the factors contributing to the problem. After much time with residents, and architectural site visits, we have selected the site of a vacant building on the community’s east side. Our final vision for the community is El Centro de Salud.

El Centro de Salud will provide the solution to reducing obesity levels in Humboldt Park. Centro de Salud will offer residents of Humboldt Park fitness, nutrition, education and personal health services at an intimate and communal level. El Centro de Salud will serve as a welcoming, public facility that serves all demographics of the community in a dynamic approach to combatting obesity.

We are ecstatic for the future, positive ripples our wellness center will have on the community as a whole. El Centro de Salud will not only mitigate and prevent obesity in residents of Humboldt Park, but will provide on-going physical and community health. We are inspired by the community of Humboldt Park, and honored to help them combat social, economic and environmental urban issues.

Joy and Cheer,

Partners at N-Quartic

OBESITY PREVALENCE: CHILDREN IN 2010

Figure generated by Jessica L. Stevenson using data provided by Jones RC, Morita J, Ramirez E, Bocskay KA, Lakhani A, Lionberger A, Harvey-Gintoft BC, Whyte S. Overweight and Obesity among Chicago Public Schools Students, 2010-11. City of Chicago, 2013 and CDC Centers for Disease Control and Provention: "Childhood Obesity Facts" and World Health Organization Fact Sheet N311, March 2013.

Obesity rates through the Chicago metro-politan area vary spatially and are depen-dent on a variety of social and economic factors. Of the 77 Chicago community areas, the areas with the highest obe-sity rates are on the western and south-ern portion areas of the city. Estimates of obesity prevalence among school aged children are mapped according to Chi-cago Community Area. Humboldt Park carries a 27-33% obesity rate, which is in the highest quarter of obesity prevalence data.

Factors that affect obesity include genet-ics, income, household composition, ac-cess to fresh foods, proximity to fast foods, availability of fi tness facilities, and educa-tion. More importantly, particular races and age levels are more probe to being pobese.

Children are of particu-lar concern when cre-ating a solution for obe-sity. Obesity is prevalent in Chicago, with higher rates of 27.7 in Humboldt Park. This is extraoridanry compared to state levels of 12. School age chil-dren are at a high risk of obesity related diseases.

ObesityObesity is a national health epidemic, plaguing our youth.

The consequences of obesity are multiple:

diabetes, strain on bones, joints, and muscles, cancer, hyperten-sion, high blood pressure, and utlimately death. The health care costs are in the hundreds of billions as more and more people develop long-term illnesses stemming from being obese. Both on an indi-vidual and systematic scale, the weight of obesity on our communities is rapidly spiraling out of control.

Although the roots of the obesi-ty epidemic are many, this can also give us hope as we try and use multiple solutions in many forms to solve a problem as many-headed as the mythical Hydra.

The quality of life detriments associated with obesity involve social stigma, inabiltity to enjoy physical activity, and addiction to highly processed junk food items that can be procured quickly and at little cost.

The lack of access to fresh, healthy food due to the small number of stores limited both in size and scope mean residents of the study area are stuck with food-like items, most of which are highly processed, high in sodium content and trans-fats. Children, especially, are vulnerable to marketing and cheap snacks.

Most residents are buying chips and sodas and getting poor health outcomes for free. With no site of healthy food in an easy distance, quality of life crumbles.

1 in 3 children in the United States are obese By the time they reach adulthood, the amount of children who will have diabetes will top 31%America faces a public

health crisis. With more chil-dren than ever spending their lives in front of screens, this generation is the first in a century to face shorter lifes-pans than their parents, tiny bodies assaulted with diseas-es stemming from lifetimes devoid of activity and healthy eating options. In Humboldt Park, where the built environment has suffered from lack of use and city disinvestment, youths face more acute risks of becoming obese, as they cannot go outside fearing for their safety, schools that pro-vided them yards and recess close, and walk and bikeabil-ity is not a priority. By offering more choices and easy ways to get moving, children will face a lighter future.

Present Future

Education correllates with increased fruit and vegeta-ble consumption. Less education results in eating less than the reccomended amount of vegetables.

El Centro de Salud

Centro de Salud will act as a catalyst in the community area of Humboldt Park in the wake of the obesity crisis. Centro de Salud, a holistic wellness center, will serve as an anchor

institution that welcomes all members of the community.

The center will provide a solution to combat the illnesses and diseases obesity causes.

Through a comprehensive approach to decreasing obesity rates, residents of the community will become more physically fit and nutritionally sustained.

The center will ignite community togetherness, and promote a better well-being amongst the residents.

El Centro de SaludInfill Development

Partners at N-Quartic have designed the community wellness center to be an infill development project. N-Quartic values rest on sustainable, adaptive reuse in community areas, while also preserving the culture and history of the community . Based on these values, this location was chosen with consideration of lacking amenities that can help mitigate and prevent obesity. Therefore, location to a majorarterial street, Grand Ave, was chosen. Consideration was also taken for the proximity to public parks, and income levels.

Location Amenities: major street, central to community area, providing new green space, adaptive reuse, eco-nomic decline, adaptive redevelopment of a commercial corridor, connectivity

Distance to: 1.5 miles to the nearest fitness club, 0.6 miles to nearest community garden, 0.2 miles to nearest fast food restaurant
