Background: With a total of 326 children (155 girls), Nuoc Trong nursery school is supposed to be
among the main kindergartens in Tan Hoi village. Operated by the workforce of 10 staff and 19 teachers,
the kindergarten is still considered to be underdeveloped with the lack of necessary facilities. Indeed, the
school is totally short of teaching tools and there are not enough toys to help the kids to develop their
intelligence as well as social skills properly. Additionally, the majority of teachers are young and
inexperienced, thus suffering a great deal of difficulties in teaching and nurturing the kids. Furthermore, a
number of classrooms in the school are quite poorly decorated, which may make it much harder in
stimulating the children’s spiritual awareness and growth.
Work: Organize activities for the kids (teaching, singing, playing games...); do gardening (planting,
picking-up grass, etc.); join in with repairing house or other manual works.
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will stay at the dormitory with basic conditions. Meals will be
prepared by volunteers, or sometimes dine in the local restaurant nearby.

years old to 18 years old. For example, children between the ages of 6 to 12 are provided with
educational courses and the older children can attend vocational training courses at the center. The
voluntary work at the center is quite intense and it requires high motivation and patience from
volunteers, volunteers need to be well prepared before starting this project but will gain so much from
the experience.

manual work with renovation (painting tree or wall). Help the staffs in the kitchen as they need to cook
for a great deal of children.

Background BUOC-village is a small village of Thai-people (an ethnic group came from southern
of China) with very pure landscape. As you can see on the above map, this area is placed by only
green color and a lot of mountain. Because of this natural condition, Thai-people here rely mainly
on agriculture. In the past, the village was located adjacent to streams and people in the village
used water of the stream for gardening. During the rainy season water from the mountain goes
down through the streams and washes everything away, making it very dangerous to live close to
the stream. For this reason, the government has helped residents here to move to higher lands, and
build permanent \traditional houses with wood. 10 years have passed since the new BUOC-village
was reconstructed in 2002. Currently, firm houses, concrete roads, electricity have become the
basic-living-condition of every villager. Although the stream is very beautiful it is dangerous.
Despite the good aspects of new infrastructure, villagers still lack a lot of education and
understanding about modern society. Therefore, it would be very helpful to help and stay with
BUOC-villagers.
Work: Help local people to garden and repair traditional houses (if needed), organize leisure activities
for their children and cultural exchange with the villagers.
Location: Buoc village, Hoa Binh city.
Terminal: Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will stay together in the bamboo house; western toilets and
bath room are available. Meals are normally served by the local people with the help of volunteers.
Remarks: Sleeping bag, sleeping mat, pillow, prove-water clothes, raincoat, info materials, pictures,
specialties and traditional clothes of your country, you are encouraged to bring along small gifts for
the local people and the children and volunteers of your camp.

Background: June 1st was proclaimed International Children’s Day by The World Conference for the
Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925. It is widely celebrated in former Soviet
nations such as Russia, China and Vietnam. In Vietnam, June is announced as National Action Month
for children with the theme is changed every year as part of Vietnam’s efforts to raise public
awareness of the care, education and protection of children.
Work: Organize special event to celebrate children’s day for the disadvantaged children (disabled,
orphans).
Location: Ho Chi Minh city.
Terminal: Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN).

SJV1525 04/08/2015 – 15/08/2015 EDU/KIDS/CUL/ART/SPORT Vols: 10
Background: Since the Youth Centre project was launched 9 years ago SJ Vietnam has succeeded in
meeting their first target goals due to the support of our local and international partners and endless
hard work of our coordinators and volunteers.
SJ Vietnam had sent most of the disadvantaged, poor and street children to public school and
vocational school where they can acquire a proper education and get integrated into the society.
Nevertheless the school fees, provided entirely by SJ Vietnam, are rather expensive and need to be
14
www.sjvietnam.org+84.4.22154993
covered. SJ Vietnam will therefore continue to provide education to the children staying at the Youth
Center but will also participate to activities to raise funds to cover the children school fees. The Centre
demonstrates the important role of volunteerism and public-private partnerships in social development.
Our general aspirations: gathering together to establish this center for disadvantaged, poor and street
children; create a space for people to exchange ideas, have a chance to study vocational skills and to
be integrated in the community. We also want this center to be a place for Vietnamese youth to
exchange their knowledge, experience and culture with international volunteers via workshops and
everyday exchange. The Youth House school has now become a Youth center.
Work: Organize activities for disadvantaged children who live illegally in the Red river and at the
school nearby Youth center.
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will sleep in volunteer’s house at SJ Vietnams office. Meals
are at local restaurant. Volunteers will have lunch at the Youth center with children and the other
volunteers.
Location: Hanoi
Terminal: Noi Bai Airport (HAN)
Remarks: Sleeping bag; sleeping mat. Toys for kids are appreciated as well.

SJV1520 14/07/2015 – 25/07/2015 EDU/KIDS/ENVI/RENO Vols: 15
Background: Cat Ba is the largest of the 366 islands spanning 260km2 that comprise the Cat Ba
Archipelago, which makes up the southeastern edge of Ha Long Bay in Northern Vietnam.
Cat Ba is the largest island in the Bay and approximately half of its area is covered by a National Park,
which is home to the highly endangered Cat Ba Langur. The island has a wide variety of natural
ecosystems, both marine and terrestrial, leading to incredibly high rates of biodiversity. Types of
15
www.sjvietnam.org+84.4.22154993
natural habitats found on Cat Ba Archipelago include limestone karsts, tropical limestone forests, coral
reefs, mangrove and sea grass beds, lagoons, beaches, caves, and willow swamp forests.
For all of its natural beauty, Cat Ba Island faces numerous environmental problems. Increases in
tourism and recent developments threaten the ecological integrity and biodiversity of the island,
reducing and fragmenting the natural habitat for Cat Ba's numerous species. Illegal hunting and
poaching, overfishing, and water pollution in Ha Long Bay continue to threaten the ecological health
of the island. The island is a national park of Vietnam and was recognized by UNESCO in December
2004 as a Biosphere reserve of the world.
Work: Organize activities for the children, small renovation at school, activities to raise awareness of
youth and local people about environment, climate change, protect white-headed langur at Cat Ba
National park...etc
Location: Cat Ba island, Hai Phong city.
Terminal: Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)

Background: Known as “the green lung of Saigon”, Can Gio biosphere reserve to the south of the city
covers around 80,000 ha of the river delta and is cloaked in rich mangrove forest that is full of
wildlife. This huge mass of green so close to the centre of Ho Chi Minh City helps clean the air of the
city and protect against coastal erosion and storms coming in from the sea. During the war, the
mangrove was a dense hiding place from which to launch attacks on the city, which both the
Vietnamese and Americans found extremely difficult to penetrate or patrol. Now the government is
16
www.sjvietnam.org+84.4.22154993
beginning to recover and is protected by the government and international laws and also there are
efforts to reintroduce much of the wildlife that fled this area.
Work: Given a training session how to plant mangrove trees then put into practice during the
workcamp. Volunteers also organize workshops of environmental topics to exchange with local staff
of Management Board of Mangrove Forest. Common actions about environment and community with
local youth are arranged as well.

SJV1535 10/11/2015 - 21/11/2015 KIDS/RENO/GARD Vols: 15
Background: The mission of Phuc Tue Center is to help disabled children become more independent
in their everyday life by building their self-confidence. At the centre we aim to help educate and
improve mental health, as well as provide development and vocational skills training to help integrate
these individuals back into employment. This not only allows these individuals to feel independent in
their everyday life but this will also lessen the potential burden on the family and society. Currently,
the centre has 80 disabled children with ailments including Down’s syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism,
children who have been victims of Agent Orange, as well as other mental illnesses. The Centre has
applied the specific education measures which are suited for each individual and has used
psychotherapy methods in attempts to rehabilitate the mentally disabled. Some of the children are
treated with medicine while others are not.
Work: Organize activities for the kids; do gardening (planting, picking-up grass, etc.); join repairing
house or other manual works
Location: Phuc Tue disabled and autism children center – Hanoi

11. World Heritage camp - change global environment
SJV1514 16/06/2015 – 27/06/2015 EDU/MAN/RENO/KIDS Vols: 50
Background: Triem Tay is a village located near the well-known Hoi An World Heritage Site and
surrounded by several tourist attractions, such as the Kim Bong wood carving and Phuoc Kieu bronze
casting villages. To reach this village, visitors will take 15 minute boat transfer from Hoi An fishing
port, across Thu Bon River. There are totally 147 households in this village and their local lives
depend on weaving mats, farming and fishing. The main architecture of Triem Tay eco-tourism village
is based on the rural community, so there are many ancient wooden houses, tranquil garden houses and
bamboo huts for visitors to enjoy beautiful river landscape.
SJ Vietnam settles down a long term project here (capacity building) in collaboration with Unesco
Hanoi and International Labor Organization Vietnam (ILO) not only to improve infrastructure, stop
landslide because of rain/typhoon but also promote our true Vietnam beauty as well as our value of

Background: Giao Xuan is one of the poor villages in Nam Dinh province. Villagers’ lives are
associated with sea including salt production, marine aquaculture. This hard work depends on the
weather; therefore, villagers face many difficulties for their lives. More than 90% of the villagers
are poor farmers and fishers, which makes them difficult to build good facilities for children in the
village. Giao Xuan kindergarten is not an exception. The kindergarten was established in August,
1990. Experiencing 25 years, it is now in a bad condition such as cracked and moldy walls, leaky
ceiling. However, there are still more than 100 children coming to this school every week.
Although this is the only school of the commune, the living conditions of the children here are
very poor and are in need of renovation.
Work: Help to paint the rooms at kindergartens; organize games and leisure activities for the poor
children; teach basic English through games, activities, songs…

Background: The Thang Long Imperial Citadel has become the 900th site to be inscribed on
UNESCO's World Heritage List. The Citadel was built in the 11th century by the Ly Viet Dynasty,
marking the independence of the Dai Viet. It was constructed on the remains of a Chinese fortress
dating from the 7th century, on drained land reclaimed from the Red River Delta in Hanoi. It was the
centre of regional political power for almost 13 centuries without interruption. The Imperial Citadel
buildings and the remains in the 18 Hoang Dieu Archaeological Site reflect a unique South-East Asian
culture specific to the lower Red River Valley, at the crossroads between influences coming from
China in the north and the ancient Kingdom of Champa in the south.
Work: Lesson of basic principles and techniques of archaeological excavation for children at world

15. Youth exchange in Mekong delta
SJV1522 14/07/2015 – 25/07/2015 ARTS/EDU/RENO Vols: 15
Background: A part of South-Western Region of Vietnam, Dong Thap is a province with highly
developed agriculture industry. It adjoins Cambodia to the North and 3 other local provinces to the
West, East and South. A typical province in Mekong Delta, Dong Thap has a complex system of
rivers, channels as well as big lakes and ponds. Taking advantages of its large water body, Dong Thap
has developed a very convenient transportation system. And as it is a very agriculture-focused
province, Dong Thap produces many valuable types of rice, poultry and seafood. Nowadays, the most
popular sceneries are borderless rice fields and peaceful boats floating on the channels.
22
www.sjvietnam.org+84.4.22154993
Enjoying a temperate climate, wide irrigation system, permanent fresh-water source supplied by Tien
River and Hau River, and rich river deposit, the agriculture of Dong Thap keeps growing well. At
present, Dong Thap is the 3rd largest rice paddy in Vietnam with a planted area of 462,042ha and
paddy output of more than 2.8 million tons. Dong Thap is also well known for fruits, specifically as
Cao Lanh mango, Lai Vung mandarin, Chau Thanh long an and Phong Hoa grapefruit (fruit-able
during the year), etc. which bring about high economic values for gardeners. Within the province,
there are various typical orchards having been specialized to produce consistent quality fruits, which
aim at building up brand-name and meeting export requirements. In Cao Lanh, almost local people

SJV1533 22/09/2015 – 29/09/2015 FEST/KIDS/SOCI/ART Vols: 15
Background: The Mid-Autumn festival is named "Tết Trung Thu" in Vietnamese. It is also known
as Children's Festival because of the event's emphasis on children. In olden times, the Vietnamese
23
www.sjvietnam.org+84.4.22154993
believed that children, being innocent and pure, had the closest connection to the sacred and natural
world. Being close to children was seen as a way to connect with animist spirits and deities.
One important event before and during the festival are lion dances. Dances are performed by both non-
professional children's groups and trained professional groups. Lion dance groups perform on the
streets, going to houses asking for permission to perform for them. If the host consents, the "lion" will
come in and start dancing as a blessing of luck and fortune for the home. In return, the host
gives lucky money to show their gratitude
Work: Volunteers will prepare performances and gifts for the disadvantaged children with different
backgrounds from different projects of SJ Vietnam: street children living in the Fisher Village or the
children patients in National hospital of Acupuncture, etc.
Accommodation and food: Volunteers will stay at the dormitory with basic conditions. Breakfast and
dinner will be provided at accommodation, only lunch at local restaurant near project site.

Background: Christmas is not listed as a Vietnamese official holiday but we still celebrate that day in
Vietnam since Vietnam used to be part of the French Empire and there are still French influences in
the Christmas traditions. Many Catholic churches have a big nativity crib scene or 'creche' with nearly
life size statues of Mary, Joesph, baby Jesus, the shepherds and animals. In some areas of Ho Chi
Minh City, usually in Catholic parishes, people have big crib scenes in front of their houses and 24
www.sjvietnam.org+84.4.22154993
decorate the whole street, turning it into a Christmas area! These are popular for people to visit and
look at the scenes.
We - SJ Vietnam try our very best to “bring” Santa Clause, whose are our international volunteers to
the disadvantage children (orphans, disabled, intellectual, hospital patients, the homeless and the poor)
to share and to build up their dream. Children can be born in different situation but they need to live in
an equal environment and we are here to create that environment.

18. Traditional New Year for poor and disadvantaged children
SJV1538 30/01/2016 – 05/02/2016 EVE/SOCI/FEST/KIDS Vols: 12
Background: Tết ([tet˧˥] or [tɜːt˧˥]), or Vietnamese New Year, is the most important celebration in
Vietnamese culture. The word is a shortened form of Tết Nguyên Đán (Nôm: 節元旦), which is Sino-
Vietnamese for "Feast of the First Morning of the First Day". Tết celebrates the arrival of spring based
on the Vietnamese variation of the Chinese lunisolar calendar, which usually has the date falling
between the months of January or February
25
www.sjvietnam.org+84.4.22154993
It takes place from the first day of the first month of the Vietnamese calendar (around late January or
early February) until at least the third day. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tết by cooking special
holiday foods and cleaning the house. These food includes Chung cake (bánh chưng), bánh dày, dried
young bamboo soup (canh măng), giò and sticky rice. There are a lot of customs practiced during Tết,
such as visiting a person's house on the first day of the new year (xông nhà), ancestral worshipping,
wishing New Year's greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people, and opening a shop.
Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. During Tết, Vietnamese visit their relatives
and temples, forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. They
consider Tết to be the first day of spring and the festival is often called Hội xuân (spring festival).
Work: Volunteers will make traditional Chung cakes and prepare special performances and gifts for
the disadvantaged people.

dinner will be provided at accommodation, only lunch at local restaurant near project site.
