Now you are holding our workcamp program for 2020 in your hands.

All our workcamps will take place in the north-eastern part of Germany: in ornear Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This area is well-known for itsbeautiful countryside and the large amount of lakes.

On the map you can find the exact places where we are arrangingworkcamps this year.

You are cordially invited to participate in one (or more ) of them!

The camps

Every year, NiG organizes about 15-20 workcamps and youth meetings in ourcountry. In a workcamp you are in a group of around 10 young people fromdifferent nations between 18 and 27, in exceptional cases at the age of 16. Awork camp lasts 2 or 3 weeks. The camp language is usually English. Yourwork is voluntary and of benefit for the public.

You will work five days a week, a total of 30 hours. You are obliged to workbecause the towns, institutions and authorities with whom we cooperate withare counting on your help. Your work is unpaid, but accommodation and foodare free. The accommodation is in school dormitories, student hostels ortents. Please bring a sleeping bag as well as working clothes and shoes withyou.

There will be many leisure time activities, events, meetings and excursions inwhich you can take part. Trips for instance to Berlin are also possible. Wealso expect you to bring in your own ideas!

If you want to participate in a camp

The program of our work camps is published in March. If you find anappropriate work camp, please fill out the volunteer exchange form and sendit to our office. You should write down alternative choices, in case it is notpossible to take part in the camp you wish to.

You have to cover all costs for travelling to and from the work camp yourself.We advise you to book your tickets as early as possible in order to benefitfrom discount prices.

Insurance

In our camps, you are covered by insurance in case of accidents and /orillness. This insurance does not cover eye- glasses, dental treatments orcars. Please check your own insurance coverage abroad before travellinghere. We advise that you buy insurance from a private health insurancecompany that covers transportation home in case of necessity (available attravel agencies). You may also think about insurance for your baggage.

The location

The NiG office is located in Rostock. It is the biggest historical hanseatic cityof the northeastern part of Germany, with about 200 000 residents. Rostockwas founded in the 13th century and is a city with many faces, surrounded bya beautiful landscape.

It is worth seeing in every season. Rostock is well known for its interestingarchitecture: merchant houses, beautiful churches and remains of old citywalls and gates give evidence of the city’s former power and wealth. Shipbuilding and maritime trade have always been important for Rostock. Ferrylines connect the city with other countries. Rostock is also famous for itsUniversity (founded in 1419). There are many interesting events for youngpeople and students. You can go to cabaret, concerts, student clubs anddiscos, theatres and cinemas. The former fishing village, Warnemünde whichbecame part of the growing city, is located where the river Warnow flows intothe Baltic Sea. There is a wonderful beach and excellent opportunities forswimming and relaxing. Our work camps are mainly located in the federalcountry of Mecklenburg- West Pomerania, to which Rostock also belongs.This area is well- known for its traditional towns and villages and for itsthousand lakes, islands and natural resources. 1. You only pay your travel expenses. Accommodation and food are forfree.

2. We may certify your participation as a practical training. Please contactus after the workcamp.

4. In the social field, we care especially for kids and handicapped people.Young people who plan to work in a social profession can find valuableexperience here.

NIG01 Vogelsang Cult 18.05. - 30.05. 10

LOCATION:The manor “Vogelsang” is located in between the nature parks “Mecklenburger-Schweiz” and “Kummerrower See”, in the heart of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - the north-eastern part of Germany. It had been built in 1849 but is in bad but still very romantic shape amidst an old english-styled park. Since the end of 2010 the building has a new owner, whotries his best to renovate the location in a neogothic style. With the help of creative hands, a lot of effort and a big amount of love the land marked houseshall become a place of rest. Website: www.herrenhaus-vogelsang.de

WORK:The aim is to have young people actively involved with culture. After an introduction in detail the first days will be focused on the Victorian-Variete from Vienna first and a Horse festival the following weekend. We need helping hands to prepare the house and the garden for the events. The main tasks will be spring-cleaning and decorating. During the festival the volunteers may take part in the cultural program (decorating, helping hands, maybe performing). The program of the festival consists of kinds of Horsemanship, of concerts and workshops and readings. The time between the events the participants will work in the manor and stables. They will help out with the necessary tasks that have to be done – like helping in the gardenor maybe painting. The exact tasks that will be undertaken will vary and volunteers are expected to be flexible in the work they do and be prepared to participate in all of the tasks fully.

NIG02 Rostock Cult 29.06. - 11.07. 10

LOCATION:The Hanseatic town of Rostock founded in the 13th century is with 200.000 residents the largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It sprawls over both sides of the Warnow and enjoys a thriving overseas trade with Scandinavia through its large port facility. It is also a city of great importance where the volunteers will among other things encounter several buildings of historical and cultural value. Due to its proximity to the Baltic Sea and to the river Warnow Rostock is usually crowded with tourists. There are a lot of opportunities for leisure activities: Among other things you can go swimming in the sea, canoeing and take a tour in big German. Rostock is shaped through the university and the students who create a vivid and modern atmosphere. (www.rostock.de)

WORK:

Volunteers will do an unforgettable theatre-project, where they have thechance to be another person on stage. The volunteers have the opportunity,to evolve a little scene, etude or even a play. Theatre is always a veryinteresting exercise to know yourself better or even to discover yourself inanother way.

NIG03 Hohen Wachter Bucht Envi/ Reno 22.06. - 04.07. 10

LOCATION:”Gut Friederikenhof” is located in the beautiful area of Ostholstein. The regionis loved by tourists who search nature and silence. Nevertheless there are lots of attractions around. For example, a big park for swimming and water-ski, nice restaurants, wellness, cinema, all is just about 10 minutes’ drive fromthe farm. Hamburg is an hour drive and Lübeck about half an hour. At the farm itself there is directly a great beach for swimming. As well there are horses, sheep and rabbits. The coast is a very nice fishing area.

WORK:

This workcamp is for nature lovers as the work will be mainly outdoors. Thevolunteers will help to renovate historic buildings at “Gut Friederikenhof”. TheFarm is located directly at the east coast of north Germany (between Kiel andLübeck). Together with you we would like to prepare the walls for future. Ouraim is that these about 100 years old buildings remains for another century.

NIG04 Teterow I Envi 06.07. - 17.07. 10

LOCATION:Teterow is a small town in the heart of the charming area known as "Mecklenburgish Switzerland". On all sides the countryside rises and merges into forested ranges of hills. Besides the historical town centre with its marketplace, town hall and church, two medieval town gates and numerous historical buildings, visitors and tourists will find many interesting sights and destinations for excursions in Teterow and surrounding

This workcamp is for nature lovers, since the work will be mainly outdoors.There is a lot of work around the natural reserve. Since it’s not possible touse common agricultural techniques, volunteers have to do everythingmanually. More over every meadow around has to be cut and the grass haveto be put aside. The aim of this project is to help to protect this unique reservethrough your contribution. This project will be done in cooperation withenvironmental agency of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

LOCATION:Trassenheide is located in the northern part of the island Usedom. Between 1936 and 1989 the region was restricted (for army use only), therefore the nature in the surroundings has developed undisturbed. The labor camp Trassenheide existed between 1941 and 1943. The inmates had to work hardfor the Nazis. There were many barracks, in which prisoners could sleep.

WORK:

In this Camp, the Volunteers will maintain ancient monuments on the area ofthe former labourcamp Trassenheide. One of them is the fundament of an oldhut in the collective camp which was build in 1941. It was used toaccommodate the workers in the second world war. In 1943 the collectivecamp was destroyed due to a bombing.

NIG06 Peenemünde II Envi 06.07. - 17.07. 10

LOCATION:

Peenemuende is located in the northern part of the island Usedom. Between1936 and 1989 the region was restricted (for army use only), therefore thenature in the surroundings has developed undisturbed. Looking back inhistory of Peenemuende participated in the development of the V-rockets andtoday is a memorial as well as a technical historical information centerreminding us of it.

WORK:

This workcamp is for nature lovers, since the work will be mainly outdoors.The volunteers will work in a nature park on the island “Usedom” located inthe Baltic Sea. Typical for the region are salt and orchid meadows. There is alot of work around the natural reserve. NIG07 Lausitz Reno/ Cons 06.07. - 19.07. 10

LOCATION:Werenzhain is located at the end of a nature reserve, which is between Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden. The former agrarian estate now is listed as an historic site. The surrounding belongs to the complex of the estate: a forest and a huge lawn, which is often occupied by sheeps. Currently the place is mainly used by artists, for seminars or for cultural events. www.atelierhof-werenzhain.de

WORK:

The volunteers will tinkering around the house and the garden. They will havethe opportunity to help with the renovation. Furthermore they will learntraditional manual technics, such as wall painting.

Lohmen is a village between Guestrow and Goldberg. The region is famousfor its lakes and forests. Lohmen is surrounded by a natural park. There areinteresting possibilities for outdoor activities like a labyrinth, sports grounds,pedestrian walkways and more. There is a lake in walking distance, whereyou can swim. Lohmen has about 850 inhabitants and was foundedapproximately around the 12th century. For further information about Lohmenvisit www.lohmen.de (only available in German).

WORK:

Volunteers will help to renovate the archaeological nature trail of thecommunity. Some kind of work will be to install a new footpath and createnew information boards about the nature trail. The archaeological nature trailpasses many interesting phenomenon’s. Also, the volunteers will help tomaintain public parks and the orchard. Work in a community.

LOCATION:

Lohmen is a village between Guestrow and Goldberg. The region is famousfor its lakes and forests. Lohmen is surrounded by a natural park. There areinteresting possibilities for outdoor activities like a labyrinth, sports grounds,pedestrian walkways and more. There is a lake in walking distance, whereyou can swim. The aim of this project is to help to protect thisunique reserve through your contribution. This project will be done incooperation with environmental agency of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

NIG10 Malchow I Hist/ Arch 10.08. - 28.08. 10

LOCATION:

Malchow, that once was situated on an island, got its town character in 1235 and was famous for its textile mills. The building of a former monastery is situated on the southern shore of the lake Malchower See, which is connected to the lake Plauer See and Müritz. The monastery was founded in 1298 and became a convent for noble women in 1572. Only a little part of the cloister remained after the rebuilding of the actual monastery.

WORK:

The participants will work on the area of an external camp of the former women´s concentration camp Ravensbrück. The women had to work there under very extreme conditions in an armament’s factory. First steps will be taken to build a memorial on the area where the former prisoners were accommodated.The volunteers are supposed to bring some ideas, about the future of the memorial.

END- EVENT:

At the end of the workcamp, the volunteers will participate at a campaigncalled “100 Years workcamp – Peace and Solidarity for the future” and will behoused in a hostel in Berlin. The event starts at the 25th and will end at the28th of August. The participants will also be prepared to take part at theevent.

NIG11 Malchow II Hist/ Arch 24.08. - 05.09. 10

LOCATION:

Malchow, that once was situated on an island, got its town character in 1235 and was famous for its textile mills. NIG12 Wüste & Glase Envi 10.08. - 22.08. 10

LOCATION:

The nature protection area “Wüste und Glase” is a domain of the end morainelandscape in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It’s a nature protection areasince the 22nd of June 1994 and it goes over 190 hectares. Because of theprivacy and the low exploitation of the place, the conditions are very good.There is a Germanic hill fort which alludes to settlement in prior periods.“Wüste und Glase” in the heart of the area called “MecklenburgishSwitzerland” is a wide landscape of forests, lakes, hills and lots of animals, soeveryone who likes nature will love this place.

WORK:

The volunteers will have to work in the forests and hills. A pond needs to befenced to protect the rare fire bellied toad. There are other old fences thatneed to be removed. In the field of stones, the volunteers will have to moveheaps of hay to clear up the area, walking in the paths of the old Germanicpeople. The volunteers will go by bike from the accommodation to theworking place. The work takes place in cooperation with the “ManfredHermsen Stiftung”, the national office for Agriculture and Environment and thenature park “Mecklenburg Switzerland”.

This work camp is for nature lovers, since the work will be mainly outdoors.There is a lot of work around the natural reserve “Upahl-Lenzen”. Since it’snot possible to use common agricultural techniques, volunteers have to doeverything manually. Moreover, every meadow around has to be cut and thegrass have to be put aside. Besides the historical town centre with itsmarketplace, town hall and church, two medieval town gates and numeroushistorical buildings, visitors and tourists will find many interesting sights anddestinations for excursions in Teterow and surroundings.

LOCATION:Peenemuende is located in the northern part of the island Usedom. Theconcentration camp Karlshagen existed between 1943 and 1945. Theinmates had to work hard for the Nazis, like building a bigger airdrome. Therewere many barracks, in which prisoners could sleep.

WORK:

In this Camp the Volunteers will maintain ancient basements on the area ofthe former concentration camp. And they will cut down rank growth, which ison top of the basis from the old barrack.

Peenemuende is located in the northern part of the island Usedom. Between1936 and 1989 the region was restricted (for army use only), therefore thenature in the surroundings has developed undisturbed. Looking back inhistory of Peenemuende participated in the development of the V-rockets andtoday is a memorial as well as a technical historical information centerreminding us of it.

Typical for the region are salt and orchid meadows. There is a lotof work around the natural reserve.
