NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY 2016 In 2016, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and

Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be sat for all students in Years 3 & 5 in all government and non-government schools. This program

will assess the literacy and numeracy learning of students in

Australian schools.

The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to

support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each

student’s level of achievement will be reported against the agreed national benchmarks of student achievement.

The tests will be conducted across Australia in Term 2 on the

same days for all students according to the following timeta-

ble:

Tuesday 10th May: Language Convention test (Spelling,

Punctuation and Grammar) and a separate Writing test.

Wednesday 11th May: Reading test

Thursday 12th May: Numeracy test (Number, Algebra, function and pattern; Chance and data; Measurement and

space)

Friday 13th May: a make-up day is scheduled for students

who missed a section of the test or were absent on a particu-lar day. However, parent support in ensuring their chid is at

school on these days is appreciated.

Easter Hat Parade Many thanks to all those parents, grandparents and friends who were able to assist in classrooms last Thursday for the

annual decorating on Easter hats in preparation for our pa-rade. Parental support is always very much appreciated, but

especially when glitter and glue may be involved!

Good Friday Appeal Held in conjunction with our Easter Hat Parade and Harmony Day celebrations, students were asked to donate a gold coin

in support of the annual Royal Children’s Hospital Good Fri-

day Appeal. We are pleased to advise that a $169.80 dona-tion has been made in support of this charity. Great work

EPS!

Year 6 Easter Raffle Congratulations to Year 6 students on conducting this year’s

Easter egg raffle and for the donations of prizes that were made.

A huge thanks are extended to everyone who purchased a ticket! A total of $387.00 was raised.

RSL Club Support Last Monday evening, Mrs Blacker and Mrs

Larcombe attended a special presentation evening at the

Deniliquin RSL Club on behalf of our school. Very generous-ly, the Club has made a $1575.00 donation to Edward PS in

support of the Mathletics program. All students have their

own password and have access to this mathematics program at school and at home and are encouraged to go on-line as

often as they can. Class time is also allocated in support of this.

The RSL Club has also given $1000 support to the annual Proud and Deadly Awards, which acknowledges the achieve-

ments of the Aboriginal students in our network.

Huge thanks to the RSL Club for their ongoing support of

our school and other community organisations. It is greatly appreciated.

Healthy Harold Visit The excitement and busyness of the term continues

with the news that Healthy Harold and the Mobile Life

Ed Van will be visiting our school in the last week of this term. All students will have the opportunity of attending

the van with their class and learning important information about developing an active lifestyle and making appropriate

decisions around healthy food choices and positive behav-iour. This cost of this activity is $5.00 per child, which has

been subsidised by the school. Please pay at the school of-

fice for your child to attend.

Hawks Hit Town! Last Wednesday, Deniliquin schools were invited to partake in an AFL super clinic with members of the Hawthorn Foot-

ball Club. Our Year 5/6 students, accompanied by Mrs Bermingham and Mrs Druitt participated in a range of activi-

ties and some students were able to get some memorabilia signed.

Dental Health Tomorrow we will welcome members of Community Health

who will address students in Year 1 and Year 6 on oral hy-

giene. Each group will receive a 20 minutes presentation.

Assembly Our last assembly for this term will be held on this Friday in

the Bradley Hall at 9am. Students in K/1MW will be present-

ing an item.

Forensic Science Students in Year 6 have been invited to attend a special fo-

rensic science session at Deniliquin High School on Thursday

this week. Permission is covered under the local excursion permission note and there is no cost involved, as the high

school is providing transport.

As we work to strengthen the ties between the high school

and EPS and to facilitate the transition of our students, we are very grateful to DHS for this offer!

Netball Trials Good luck to those EPS students who are trialling for the

PSSA Netball team on Friday. We know that they will be worthy ambassadors for our school.

Soccer Clinics This Friday, students in Kindergarten to Year 4 will partici-pate in special soccer clinics as a part of sport. Special

thanks to Mrs Werner for coordinating this opportunity for our students.

School Uniform As we head into the cooler weather, students have been

reminded that school uniform is the correct attire. Jumpers with hoodies are not a part of our uniform. Parent support

in ensuring that all students have our uniform is requested.

A reminder that we have many items of unclaimed lost property at school!

Playgroup A reminder to all families that Intereach is continuing to

conduct a playgroup at our school on Thursday mornings

from 9am to 11am. It is open to all pre-school children and their families and everyone is very welcome.

Edward on the Edward- THANKYOU to everyone who supported this first ever Edward on the Edward music festival.

It was a fantastic day, with great feedback from all involved. We sold over 120 tickets, and with children we had over

250 people attend. Highlights of the day included a dedication of “Wild thing” to the Edward school teachers, Deb Bowie accompanying her daughter Anna in Joanie Mitchells “Paradise”, current students Tom Bradley and Henry Mi-

chael playing in the 7 notes. Of course the pinnacle of the Festival was Shane McGrath and Sophie Butchers per-formance, which was simply breathtaking! Thank you so much to Linda Harvey and Scott Mildren who came up

with the original idea and did all the ground work leading up to the event. Thanks to South West Music- Damian,

Shane & Pip for their support. They have been absolutely phenomenal! Thanks to our wiling workers who spent much of their weekend picking up gear, setting it up and then cleaning up- Anthony Bradley, Peter Bermingham, Michael

Todd, Wayne Bradley, Christina Mildren, Alex Glowrey, Anthony Michael and Fiona Millward. Thanks to the Harvey, Bar-nett and Holloway families who allowed us to use their fantastic riverside space. Thanks to everyone who leant us

gear- Druitts, Barnetts, Everitts, Decentralised Demountables and Deniliquin Ute Muster. Thanks to the Ute Muster and

IGA for the donation of the raffle prizes. Thanks to the sponsors, Peppin Planners and thanks to all of the Edward fami-lies, ex-Edward families and everyone who came along and supported this great event. I feel sure that it will grow in

the future! Initial estimates are that this event raised at least $3000, which will go into projects for all of our children.

Thanks to everyone who attended our first meeting of the year. It was great to see a few new faces! As well as the

organisation of our Edward on the Edward Music Festival, it was also great to get information from our Principal, Mrs

McGuiness about school numbers, class organisation, school events etc. The next meeting is Tuesday 10th May.

We are also planning fundraising for our school- and we will need support from the parent body. Coming up are the

ANZAC day races which we will need 6- 8 helpers for. We are also looking for ideas for Mother’s Day. Traditionally

we hold a stall, but we need a couple of people to coordinate it. If you think you could help, please give your name to the office or text Felicity on 0488054356.
