About Us
James Robertshaw
was founded in 1860
by its namesake Mr
James Robertshaw of
Collyhurst, Manchester.
Originally the company made Victorian box
awnings with woodwork carved by hand,
but were best known for the Spring Roller
system, patented in 1908 and produced
until 1954.
The business stayed within the Robertshaw
family until the tragic death of James’
grandson William Lancelot Robertshaw in
1960 and was then bought by production
manager, Arthur Harrison, who relocated
the company to Farnworth, Bolton.
Arthur owned and ran the business until ill
health forced retirement in 1979. Arthur’s
son-in- law, Nigel Sharrock, who also
worked within the business, assumed
the role of Managing Director throughout
Arthur’s illness and subsequent passing in
1980 and has been the team’s MD since.
Today James Robertshaw is still a family
owned and run business with Nigel’s wife,
Lesley and son Matthew, joining him in
sitting on the board. In 2010 after 50 years
at its Farnworth home, James Robertshaw
re-located to its current, modern facility and
headquarters at Horwich, Bolton.
All products are designed and manufactured
at the company’s facility and headquarters
in Bolton. With clients ranging from
independent bars; national chains and bar
brands; architects and contractors working
on major hospitality projects; and blind
trade; James Robertshaw has the creativity,
expertise and knowledge to make a visible
difference to any business.

Education and Healthcare
The blinds, awnings and
canopies designed and
manufactured by James
Robertshaw can all be
used in educational and
healthcare facilities.
Ranging from small primary schools to huge
student housing developments and whole
University campuses; and from NHS Trusts
to GPs and other healthcare providers.
From simply providing shade to a children’s
playground and privacy for patients at a
surgery, to a major shade sail installation
in a children’s hospital (see our case study)
and providing window blinds to a whole
hospital campus, James Robertshaw has a
huge range of products available for lots of
different uses.
The whole portfolio is designed and
manufactured to the highest standards,
including anti-ligature ‘Make It Safe’ (EN
13120) specification; specific flame retardant
and anti-bacterial coatings resulting in easier
to clean and maintain products. As well
being made from robust and sustainable
materials the products are durable and
long-lasting.
In addition to the off-the-shelf ranges,
James Robertshaw work with designers,
specifiers and facility managers to create
bespoke products for particular challenges,
offering practical and cost-effective
solutions to its customers.

Case Study Evelina Hospital School
Bespoke solution improving comfort without compromising architectural features.
Shade sails cover an area of 225 square metres.
The Brief
Evelina Hospital School is part of the Guy’s & St Thomas
NHS Trust, Westminster. The building contains a large glass
atrium and unfortunately during hot summer months the
heat and glare from glazing became very uncomfortable for
the children and teachers.
Guys & St Thomas NHS Trust approached James Robertshaw
having seen the firm’s installation of shade sails at both the
Nottingham College of Leadership and Bank of England
projects.
The Outcome
James Robertshaw’s solution was to design shade sails made
of flame retardant, tensile, specialist screen fabric treated
with a permanent anti-bacterial coating, which makes the
sails easier to clean and reduce risks of infection.
The shade sails cover a 225 square metre area and range
from a base height of four metres to a maximum height of
eight metres. The sails are tensioned one metre from the
glass to allow easy window cleaning access. The sails were
installed over a weekend, so as not to impact on the school,
and used specialist installation equipment.

Case Study The Royal Oldham Hospital
Bespoke blinds for clinical areas.
Cost effective and long lasting solution.
The Brief
The North West’s largest NHS Trust had a problem – newly
installed blinds were breaking quickly and often because the
plastic fittings were splitting under the strain of constant use
by staff and patients.
The money and time spent replacing the blinds was
impinging on the Trust’s £44m development programme,
and wasn’t sustainable for future developments. After
discovering there was no viable off-the-shelf alternative,
James Robertshaw offered the perfect solution – a bespoke,
resilient blind.
The Outcome
Working closely with the Trust, James Robertshaw created
a strong, safe blind, which can withstand the pressures of
hospital life. The new blind used anti-bacterial fabrics, metal
instead of plastic, heat sealed pockets for weights, and a
double bridge, anti-ligature operating chain.
The adapted product was first fitted in the Royal Oldham’s
new women’s and children development in 2012 and is now
rolling out the blinds as a standard across the Trust in all of
its development schemes in clinical areas.
