The Brief
Building your own home is an ambitious project at the best
of times. Building a Passivhaus is a different proposition
altogether. It requires extremely high levels of insulation,
high performance windows with insulated frames, airtight
building fabric and ‘thermal bridge free’ construction.
Passivhaus isn’t simply a style, it’s a standard, and to be
certified as genuine your Passivhaus must adhere to the
necessary criteria.
An essential aspect of any Passivhaus is carefully controlled
temperature management and moderation, the kind of
control, only offered by an advanced blind system.
“In addition to the environmental benefits I wanted the
fact that the house had been specially designed to be
recognised. The Passivhaus accreditation is a recognised
badge and when I come to sell the house people will
understand the quality of the build.”
- Dr Simon Frain, Passivhaus Self-builder
The Outcome
We installed three JR N101: EnviroLine VZ90 Venetian Blinds,
and four JR R101: Eliminate Roller Blinds. Automatic, remote
controlled blinds designed with thermostatic control in mind.
Dynamic blinds that work in harmony with the movement
of the sun to keep homes cool in the summer, warm in the
winter and admit sufficient light all year round.
On the south facing ground floor, the horizontal Venetian
slats meant that the rooms were always bright and
welcoming, at the same time as controlling the amount of
direct sunlight. On the first floor bedroom where light access
wasn’t such an ongoing issue the Roller Blind option worked
best.
Concludes Simon, “I’m extremely happy. Happy with both
the product and the service. A job really well done.”

We did a lot of research into
suitable suppliers, James
Robertshaw not only offer
the best technology, they
understand it intimately. They
clearly know exactly what they
are doing. In the end they were
the obvious choice. We sent
them the drawings, they came
back with a detailed proposal
a competitive price and
sensible time scale.

The Brief
Pete Smith, a self-builder in Cheadle, was looking for the
best way to achieve a Passivhaus. Whilst there are increasing
numbers of self-builders looking to pursue the Passive route,
manufacturers and suppliers haven’t been so quick off the
mark in providing the right products to get the job done.
With large south-facing windows, Pete was after a system
that would allow in plenty of sunshine during the winter
months and in the summer, keep the heat out to prevent the
building from overheating. The best solution to achieve this
would be one that stopped the sunlight entering the room in
the first place - an exterior blind system.
The Outcome
We gave Pete a quote for six N101: EnviroLine VZ70’s with
a site visit to ensure the specifications were right. Six sets
of great looking exterior Venetian blinds - three for the
extended living space on the ground floor, and one each for
the first floor bedrooms. Each one controlled individually
using a remote handset.
As the new house was being built in a conservation area,
there were colour restrictions placed by the council on the
blinds.
“James Robertshaw specially powder coated the blinds to
a council approved colour. Nothing was too much trouble.
I would recommend James Robertshaw in a heartbeat.
They’re an excellent company to work with. As well as being
local, they offered a much more realistic price.”
- Pete Smith, Self-Builder
Environmentally friendly features are an essential
consideration in almost every new build. If you’re looking for
a way to harness the energy in your house, get in touch.

“They really suit the
contemporary urban aesthetic
of the building. From an
architectural point of view
they work and from a personal
point I think they’re excellent.
They not only do exactly what
they’re designed to do, they
look great.”
