Pre-registration pathway
• Partner University is UWE• Degree only pathway – 3 years• Entry requirements• 50% academic 50% clinical • GHNHSFT work closely with UWE to ensure
curriculum is fit for purpose – meeting both service requirements and NMC requirements
• Changing scope of Nursing profession
Entry requirements for pre-registration programmes• 3 A levels (or equivalent) grades A – C• Ideally includes a Science• GCSE grades A – C which have to include Maths,
English and a Science• Formal interview at UWE with Academics, Stakeholders
and Service Users on selection panel• Written test and Numeracy examination at selection• Annual numeracy testing throughout three year
programme – will not progress without 100% pass each year

• Changing healthcare agenda shaping curriculum• Emphasis on stronger Nursing Leadership qualities• Stronger emphasis on critical thinking, analysis and
reflection• Stronger emphasis on problem based learning• Improved teaching on anatomy & physiology• NMC directed following public and professional
consultations
Changing perception & scope of Nursing profession• Ageing population – people are living longer• Care needs are changing• Health care services are evolving to meet these
needs• Fundamental human need is to be looked after
with care and compassion• Pre-registration curriculums need to ensure
competence and proficiency
Band 5 Transition programme
• GHNHSFT have always supported transition from student to staff Nurse
• 2010 GHNHSFT signed DH pledge in partnership with NMC and South West SHA to enrol all newly registered practitioners
• Flying Start England – partnership with University of Gloucestershire
What is preceptorship
• Structured transition phase from newly registered to 12 months post registration
• Develops confidence and apply knowledge from academic studies and placements
• Foundation for life long learning • Improves patient care and experience• Improves recruitment & retention• Improves staff satisfaction and morale
Preparation of our Health Care Support Workers• Historically always developed (NVQ etc)• Recognise need for more proactive and local
approach to this workforce• Band 2 Development Programme• Accreditation route being discussed with various
education providers
• Designed to develop staff into confident, competent and empowered individuals
• Interwoven throughout programme is Trust strategic objectives, contemporaneous health care issues
• Strong focus on Dignity, Care, Compassion, Respect, Kindness throughout all stages of programme
• Practice based learning• Accreditation route• Strive to improve patient experience by increasing
knowledge and skills of staff
Widening Participation
• Foundation Degree in Health Care Practice in partnership with Gloucestershire College and UWE
• Apprenticeship Framework in partnership with Telford College
• Widening Access
